Ofc Spock is alienated, and it’s a beautiful and heart wrenching conflict, but I think Kirk’s alienation in TOS is just as fascinating.

Kirk can’t have long term romantic relationships because he is Captain. He refuses to get with people on his crew who he has direct control over (in the context of Spirk I believe that this would also cause him to hesitate in forming a relationship with Spock) and of course all other relationships would be long-long-long distance.

Jim’s romances are also often ruses; it’s not often that he seems to truly fall in love with a woman as opposed to simply seducing her in order to gain an advantage.

Jim has to be forced by Spock and McCoy to relax; he also seems to have told no one about either his traumatic experience on Tarsus IV, or his traumatic experience with the spooky evil fog. This seems to me to show a reluctance to show weakness.

Jim loves his position as captain and would do (almost) anything to maintain it.

I also see Kirk as fairly calculating; he is able to put emotion aside to make difficult choices (as in The City on the Edge of Forever). Kirk, while personable, is a fairly Vulcan human.

All of these things, I believe, show that Kirk probably feels lonely and alienated. I think this is why he understands Spock so well — they are able to find in each other the solace they lack everywhere else. Kirk can trust that Spock won’t be manipulated by him because of Spock’s Vulcan strength and logic; Kirk doesn’t have to worry about Spock attempting to gain power because Spock does not want command.

Jim struggles with loneliness and alienation. Boom.

Doing a PhD at the Daystrom Institute, like

  • You wanted Dr. Maddox to be your advisor, but he disappeared, so you get Dr. Jurati
  • You find out a few years later that Dr. Jurati murdered Dr. Maddox, but she wasn't criminally responsible, so it's okay. You're okay. It's too late to change advisors now
  • (She is, however, clearly having a depressive spiral and keeps turning up drunk at your advising sessions over subspace)
  • (Whatever, just keep your head down; focus on how future hiring committees will react to seeing the words "DAYSTROM INSTITUTE" on your CV)
  • Except now you need to rewrite your whole "Research Ethics" section because it turns out that there's an intergalactic civilization of godlike machines who will annihilate all organic life in the Milky Way at the drop of a hat if they think that we're mistreating our AIs
  • It takes two years, and you need to go to Coppelius to do it, but you finally get the rewrites done; you just need Dr. Jurati to sign off on your final draft so you can do your defence; it's going to be alright. "DAYSTROM INSTITUTE", right?
  • Except it turns out that she's a Borg Queen now (and, due to a time travel accident, apparently has been for the last 400 years? No one can explain it to you in a way that makes sense)
  • Fuck it. Contact her anyway.
  • She's very apologetic, but says that she can't sign off on your dissertation because your theory was actually disproven by an alien cyberneticist that she assimilated two hundred years ago in an uncharted region of the Gamma Quadrant
  • She does, however, offer you a position as "drone"
  • You're honestly not sure whether this sounds better or worse than staying in grad school
  • 25th century academia is a messed-up scene

Except you get a job offer at the end of it!

she would totally sign off on your dissertation if you took the postdoc offer

TVTropes is such a weird website because the language (and I guess the 'culture') of the site was codified in an extremely specific era of internet use (mid to late aughties), and by members of an extremely specific and insular subgroup (nerds) that it codified all the tropes in what is effectively a dead language. No one talks like that anymore and yet because there's no renaming or updating, and in the 2000s we thought the future was forever babyyyy etc, it all continues to chug along as part of a world where self-respecting adults use words like "woobie". It's remarkable to me because its not a relic or preserved in amber (an online Pompeii like an abandoned geocities page), people are actively using it! Like finding an island where everyone speaks English in the style of Chaucer. I would be just as surprised if a man on the street greeted me "Hail and well met" as if someone in casual conversation deployed the phrase "crowning moment of awesome".

I was watch the first AOS movie with my grandparents a few night ago, when it ended my nanny got up and said “the Original Kirk was a bit Fruity but he had all those women…..the women were to cover up the fruity.” I don’t remember why she said it but She’s older and wiser so I believe her.

i cannot believe that the dark fantasy horror show went okay we are going to create a protagonist who is psychic and drinks blood and can exorcise demons by looking at them and is fated to be lucifer's vessel and then. managed to make said protagonist so boring. that his closested daddy issues older brother became the main character

I already reblogged this but I have to reblog it again because the tags are where I live now
