I’ve started walking with my daughter to and from school instead of cycling, but it’s 1.2 km each way (about ¾ mile) and I do it 4x a day. Ezri is 14 now, and her stiff old bones mean she can’t go very far, or very fast. So she has a stroller now (it’s for a kid, but I added a pillow and some scarves to help ensure the front and sides are more secure for if we go over a bump - and she’s harnessed in anyway). She was a little unsure at first, but she’s ridden hundreds of times in a cargo bike, so once she realized it meant she got to go out and be with us, she had a good time. Ezri can ride to school with us and we can go fast enough to get there on time, and she rides most of the way back, till we get to a nice grassy bit and I let her out to have a leisurely sniff-and-pee at her own pace.

How is Ezri? How are you?
Ezri’s good. She’s getting on in years so she’s having some difficulties with her hearing and sight, but I’ve always used a combination of hand gestures and verbal commands so there’s redundancy, and in the past couple years I’ve added different patterns of stomps on the floor/ground for a different sound and vibration she can feel through her feet. We spend 99% of our time together, and I carry her upstairs at bedtime so she can sleep on my bed, and down the stairs in the morning because she is but a little dog and cannot go down the stairs safely. I work from home, so she just lazily follows me from room to room and flops down at my feet whereever I am. In her old age she’s gotten kinda sassy, definitely understanding when I tell her to stop borking at a cat on the fence, but she’ll just turn around, look at me, and go back to borking. Or sometimes she’ll get into the trash and I’ll find her gnawing on a discarded slice of pizza obtained illicitly, and a mess near the kitchen. She’s earned it though, having spent years being ridiculously obedient and perfect, and it warms my heart to see her confident enough to disobey and have some mild, normal doggo shenanigans, secure in the knowledge that all that’ll happen to her is a gentle scolding and then a pat on the head. Even my dog knows I’m a pushover.
If I lived on an island full of people who only spoke in 40 minute monologues I too would drink a cup of poison.
It was a beautiful summer evening, so we went to the playground after dinner. Ezri’s getting on in years, and it’s become obvious that she’s losing her hearing pretty significantly. I’ve always done hand signs along with her commands, just in case of exactly this happening, and it’s become especially useful now that she only seems to understand about maybe 10-20% of the commands I give her verbally. So we spent a while this evening reinforcing the hand signs, and adding a double-stomp along with her name to get her attention, because she’s at about 98% accuracy if she can see me do the hand signs for her commands, but doesn’t always respond to her name. Even though she is an old dog, she is still incredibly easy to train - she’s super eager to please and intelligent, and by the end of the visit to the playground, we were doing fully hand signs, no verbal commands, in repeated sit-stay-come-heel cycles all around the playground as the light went golden and started to wane. Hopefully her eyesight will hold out for a while longer - I know it’s really bad in the dark these days and her eyes have some of that old dog fog, but even if she’s blind and deaf, we’ll figure something out. She has me well trained, at least - follows me when I turn off all the downstairs lights and lays down for me to carry her upstairs, and then wags her tail and looks at my bed expectantly till I give in and help her up onto it so she can sleep in bed with me rather than on her big stack of cushions on the floor beside my bed. She’s spoiled, but she deserves it. <3

Ezri has learned that my children are defenseless against this pose and will give her anything she wants when she does. She does it a *lot* now.

Searching for ‘bakfiets’ might help as that’s the Dutch term and they’re quite popular here. They’re also... pretty pricey. Mine current one is a Babboe City, without electric assist but with the cover, seat cushion, rear rack, and a rain cover for the whole thing, even on sale, it cost about as much as a decent laptop. But it’s my primary mode of transportation (I don’t have a car) and a lot of my exercise, too, so... was worth it to me. I wouldn’t recommend one without electric assist if you live somewhere with any hills at all - though aftermarket electric conversion kits can be cheaper than buying a bakfiets with it built in.

Yes, she is. Spots, self conscious, and trying really hard to be liked... seemed fitting. :)
How old is Ezri?
I don’t know exactly, as I didn’t get a lot of documentation on her when I got her, but she’s around 11 or 12, possibly a little older.
