“your rent should be a third of your income” well wouldn’t that be nice. wouldn’t it. lower the rent pussy

Avatar

Casual observation from someone old enough to remember: in the year 2000 financial advice was that rent should be no more than 1/4 of your income.

Avatar

Until the mid 80s, the advice was that if you must rent instead of owning, then that 20% of your monthly income (oh yes, only 20%) should include all your utilities too.

After all, rent costs more than a mortgage, so it should offer more too.

The housing market is a fucking travesty.

Hmm what happened in the mid eighties....

Crab Day!!!

Where:

Here on Tumblr!!

What:

Buy crabs!

Why:

As we now know, Tumblr is $30 million dollars in debt. Oops. Tumblr has announced some major (and unpopular) changes to the site in their attempt to get back above water. The alternative is that Tumblr ceases to exist. But maybe we can change that...

How:

There are 327 million unique tumblr visits per month, and almost 500 million active accounts. If 10 million unique users (or less, if we bought more than one) bought or gifted Crabs from the Tumblr store, we could knock out Tumblr's debt easily. Buy crabs!

When:

July 29, 2023 is Crab Day, running through August 5 (for anyone who can't log on that day) as Crab Week!

Who:

Everyone!! If you truly can't afford to participate with a $3 crab, (or other item from the shop) post crab memes!

Time for Tumblr users to rise again and surprise everyone...

For Disability PRIDE Month - It’s EXTREMELY important to remember that COVID still exists.

It never went away, and it’s as dangerous as ever.

Here are some facts everyone should be aware of:

1) COVID has killed millions around the world (directly and indirectly - such as causing heart problems, for example, and then causing a lethal heart attack months later), and debilitated tens of millions, if not more, around the world in only a few years.

2) COVID can and often does cause long term effects which can last for months, years, or even a lifetime. These long term effects commonly include: fatigue, shortness of breath, loss of taste and smell, etc. - but there are countless other long term effects. Ongoing health issues that come from an infection is called “Long COVID” - and can range in severity.

3) Most people with Long COVID have reported being dismissed, and even gaslit or made fun of by family, and even medical staff. They have been told “it’s all in their head” or “not that serious”.

4) No age, gender, race, nationality, etc. is immune to COVID. ANYONE can get it. There are some groups of people, however, that are more likely than others to have more severe outcomes from an infection.

5) Herd immunity cannot be achieved with COVID, because the virus mutates every time it infects a group a people. This new mutation can dodge any immunity you have from a previous infection, and infect you again. Millions of people around the world have already had COVID multiple times - often different mutations/variants of the virus. The less often you and the people around you get COVID, the better.

6) While vaccines and boosters can prevent more severe illnesses and even death - you can still get COVID and Long COVID, even if you’ve been vaccinated. Vaccine efficacy only lasts a few months, and the vast majority of Americans are not up to date with their boosters.

7) COVID can wreck your organs and immune system, and make you more susceptible to other diseases and conditions - such as Pneumonia.

8) Since COVID is a relatively new virus, there’s still a lot not known about it; but the limited knowledge we do have on it is terrifying.

9) “Mainstream Media” doesn’t talk about COVID anymore, because society wants to pretend it doesn’t exist anymore. Lockdowns, masking, taking precautions, etc. was costing too much money and inconveniencing too many people - so the average person would rather just pretend it doesn’t exist, even though it does. Just because everyone around you thinks “COVID is over”, doesn’t mean it is. Don’t be fooled.

10) An experiment was done on lab mice: reinfecting them with COVID. By the 10th infection - all the mice were dead…

10 infections sounds like a lot, but if you’re 20 and you get 1 infection every year on average - you’re not likely to live past 30…

If you do, you’re almost guaranteed to have some from of Long COVID.

Please take COVID seriously, for yourself, and everyone around you…

Here's your word of the day: Dysautonomia. It means a disruption, chronically, of the autonomic nervous system. What does that mean? Well, that's the system of your brain and nerves all over your body that regulates work your body does without you thinking about it.

Breathing. Blood pressure. Digestion. Certain mental processes. That kind of stuff.

Now what does this have to do with COVID? Well, it just so happens that the venn diagram of Long Covid (or Covid at all) and Dysautonomia is very close to a perfect overlap. It's not so much that this is all it does, as it is very much one of the things it is doing. Go look for serious medical studies to get the idea.

You don't have to understand all the medical words to get the point that this is a real thing medical folks are studying and trying to fix. If Covid does this, and it's our nervous system and brain...uh. Well. We do not have tons of stuff that heal the nervous system and brain. Maybe try a little harder to not get it in the first place, yo. Here, have a medical review.

My sister was in the ICU last week and there was someone suffering from COVID in the same ward as her. She's immunocompromised, already sick, and on the same floor as a COVID patient. My mom freaked out. Luckily she was healthy enough to move to a regular room right after that but it's still scary. COVID is still very much a thing and is still killing people.

NO.

this is about the IARC not the FDA. the IARC (international agency for research on cancer) is part of the WHO (world health organization) and not a food safety agency. they classify "agents" (chemical, physical, or biological entities or exposure circumstances) based on how likely they are to cause cancer:

Group 1: Carcinogenic to humans (126 agents)

Group 2A: Probably carcinogenic to humans (94 agents)

Group 2B: Possibly carcinogenic to humans (322 agents)

Group 3: Not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans

this new classification of aspartame as 2B "possibly carcinogenic to humans" is the result of a review of available studies, and mostly intended to encourage additional research. it is not aimed at consumers/the public and it does not take dosage or frequency into account.

for context: apart from aspartame, group 2B includes things like "aloe vera, whole leaf extract", "carpentry", "magnetic fields", and "traditional asian pickled vegetables"

"occupation as a hairdresser or barber", "very hot beverages at above 65°C" (149°F), and "consumption of red meat" are all classified as 2A

and Group 1 includes "alcoholic beverages", "epstein-barr virus", "salted fish", "processed meat", and being a painter.

anyway. this is fearmongering and disinformation. stop using memes for news and dont reblog "news" posts without sources.

original reuters report:

where is that net zero information quote

"stop using memes for news and dont reblog "news" posts without sources"

immediately two people using a meme to make a joke about "net zero information" as if counteracting fearmongering misinfo is a net zero this is FAR more information than the original post gave Y'ALL PLEASE

I honestly can’t decide which is funnier:

1. He broke Twitter by implementing bad code and covered it up by announcing the limitations

2. He broke Twitter by not paying his google cloud bill and covered it up by announcing the limitations

3. He broke Twitter by fundamentally misunderstanding Twitter and bragged about it by announcing the limitations.

Hey, Chris D. in Canada, thanks for texting me. I’m gonna send you a signed, framed poster. Don’t forget to text me your address!

Text me “YARD SALE” by 11 AM PT & I might send you something, too…

Reddit communities may be reopening but the fight is not done. Some Communities have changed to show their love of John Oliver, while others have embraced goblin porn. Others have reopened like normal to avoid backlash from the Admin team.

But at the end of the day, all Communities, like r/ Showerthoughts, are still demanding answers and changes from the Reddit admin team.

A subreddit I follow called r/TranscribersofReddit has announced they’ll be shutting down permanently at the end of the month. For the unaware, they were dedicated to image and video transcription for a number of other subreddits.

This piece of news is hitting me harder for some reason than the other info on the blackout. I guess I’d say it feels more personal- I was never on r/196 despite how much reposting I do in that tag, but I did a few transcriptions through ToR. It’s also hard the hear that a really great community of volunteers have realized that, although they are needed by many, they are not wanted by the right people, and that their job will only become more impossible and pointless if they attempt to stay.

For the short term, I’ll actually be on Reddit more frequently, as the community is attempting to clear the queue of remaining requests. Longer term, though, it’s sinking in that I may be here longer than I’d hoped. My followers may see more actual posting from me (as opposed to reposting). For anyone else reading this, it’s been said before, but fuck the Reddit API retool, fuck the greed of every shareholder who pushed for denying accessibility to their resources in favor of clawing every nickel they can from their website, and fuck Steve Huffman personally.

And don’t go to r/worldnews unless you’re ready for nudes

I love how all the people coming from reddit are all agreeing that tumblr is so much better and they should have switched over years ago

like, yes, yes, leave your hellsite (derogatory) and come join our hellsite (affectionate)

I'm really enjoying the memes we're getting, like I hope you reddit refugees enjoy your time here. It absolutely sucks that you're going through this. I will miss the questions for niche subjects that reddit has but hopefully the CEO eats shit and falls down 20 flights of stairs and reddit becomes reddit again.

But until then I hope you guys enjoy your time here and celebrate our weird little holidays on this hellsite (affectionate)

Reddit strikes again: the entire /r/mildlyinteresting moderator team has been kicked out of their moderator positions and locked out of their accounts with 7-day suspensions! As of posting this, they are apparently reinstated, but reddit gave a pretty poop excuse for why the whole thing happened:

It looks like the mods-getting-kicked event happened to a bunch of other subs too, and some of those still aren't reinstated.
