Half-n-Half’s method for befriending other pets is “bother them until they like me” and it’s really funny seeing him experience the other side of that dynamic for the first time. Poor guy doesn’t know what to do

Aitah? I forcibly gave my son a haircut.

My son, 8, is a lazy brat who can most often be found eating.

He makes messes everywhere he goes.

And he refused to do anything about his hair.

It was so long and matted that things were starting to get tangled in it.

So one day I held him down and took some scissors to him.

He wasn't happy about, that's for sure.

Now he looks bad and my dad (63) has been making fun of my boy.

Aitah? He took pride in his hair.

Here's a picture of him. He agreed to be posted. You can see his shortened hair on his back.

We were having 100 degree weather and we have no AC. I did what I could. He has been distant ever since.

So, aita?

Smooth Reddit to Tumblr integration event.

[Image ID: A warrior cats comic depicting the Reddit to Tumblr migration.

First panel: A deadpan white and orange cat representing Reddit users looks up and says, “AITA for seeking asylum in your territory for my clan? I (20) ask TumblrClan (16)- ”. There is a spiky gray-green blob in the back that could be an audience of cats watching, or trees and bushes behind them.

Second panel: Tumblrclan’s leader looks down silently from a tall stone. They’re dark blue, with two scratches over one eye forming the shape of the Tumblr logo. At the base of the stone is an extremely smug light blue cat, representing Twitter.

Third Panel: Zoom in on the Twitter cat’s face. They think, “It'll be great to see someone else- ”but are cut off by Tumblr saying, “Yeah sure.”

Fourth Panel: The same view of Twitter’s face, but as only a rough sketch and uncolored. They’re absolutely distraught, and question marks float around their head, along with the thoughts, “But?”, “Shots fired to keep the rent low…”, “Kungpow penis”, “Don't want you twittypets on our blessed site”, “Twittypet.”, “Back from whence you came, scum”, and “Kungpow Penis”. \End ID.]

This is within my purrview I think

it actually makes me really happy when you share a cultural food and someone else says oh, that’s almost the same as my cultural food!, and then they share it with you and they’re right, it is almost the same

it doesn’t really matter to me if it’s rooted in cultural exchange hundreds of years ago or if two groups of people made the same food independently in two different distant geographic areas, i love people and food and how food connects us in unexpected ways

TIL a family in Georgia claimed to have passed down a song in an unknown language from the time of their enslavement; scientists identified the song as a genuine West African funeral song in the Mende language that had survived multiple transmissions from mother to daughter over multiple centuries (x)

In 1997 Amelia’s daughter, Mary Moran, and other members of the Moran family were invited to Sierra Leone, West Africa, where they were welcomed in Freetown by Sierra Leone’s President and then flown by helicopter to the country’s interior.  There, in the small village of Senehun Ngola, Mary and Bendu Jabati met and sang this song together for the first time.  Years earlier, Bendu’s grandmother had told her that this song, which had been passed down in her village from mother to daughter for centuries, would one day reunite her to long-lost relatives.

In addition to finding out where in Africa her ancestors were abducted into slavery, Mary Moran discovered the meaning of the Mende song: a processional hymn for the final farewell to the spirit, it was sung in Senehun Ngola by women as they prepared the body of a loved one for burial.

(The OP's link leads to a site with a recording of the song sung by both Mary Moran and her mother, Amelia)

Imagine being buried alive and then seeing this little guy with a backpack suddenly arrive

It gets better. The little backpack has a two-way radio.

So you’re trapped under rubble, and then a rat shows up. Flicks a switch on its little tumtum. And starts talking to you.

until you said that it never occurred to me that the woman in STEM was the scientist and not the rat. i was just like “hell yeah, this rat is a powerful woman pioneering lifesaving technologies as a rescue ranger”

why are we sleeping on this
