Hardcase has like twenty peeking out of his pack “so they can breathe.” Kix bans them from the medbay until someone lays one in a cot under the blanket like its getting treatment and just breaks down laughing/crying. Fives starts a game of seeing how many worms they can tape to Rex without him noticing.

Vader Lives AUs are so absurdly good and will always be one of the best star wars au genres because on one hand, you have a man who crunches people’s necks under his heel and kills people with his brain from miles away and flips tanks and is largely considered one of the most dangerous people alive, but on the other hand, this man has been deprived of the basic sensory value of existence for so long the memory of it is like a dream, and if he felt a fleece blanket he might have a cardiac event just from the idea of experiencing a texture that isn’t one of the four (4) things he’s used to. most of everything he sees is red and when he’s not seeing in red he can barely see at all, so if you showed him, i don’t know, mauve, his synapses might just shit themselves to death. if he was allowed the taste of apple juice he might not be capable of speech for several hours. if another human being touches his skin for .005 seconds the possibility is not zero that he would have a stroke about that. like he’s guilty of such a litany of hideous crimes that feeling sorry for him is almost completely unfeasible, but also he has not felt sunlight for twenty four years and when he saw it through a window he stared at it like nothing else existed in the universe. you don’t expect the monster at the end of the book to come out of general anesthesia asking mumbled, delirious questions about his mother, but there you have it, the one dude in all the galaxy who is a bottomless pit of misery.
i was thinking that people don’t appreciate how overwhelmingly funny the death star getting blown up is; i mean, you know, on some level, this is just some teenager from space alabama who grew up shooting cans with a shotgun going, “yeah, you want me to attack the biggest military base in space history with absolutely no piloting-in-space experience? i can do that.” like back in space alabama luke flew the equivalent of a crop duster, maybe, but then the rebellion’s like this kid we met two hours ago, we need to put him in a fighter. luke has absolutely no hours piloting a fighter in space before this, and then he succeeds because he’s got magic powers, and the voices told him to. what is probably the most overwhelmingly enormous military base ever built in space with the most extreme firepower ever amassed in space loses in a fight to a guy who had less flight time than a fresh soviet pilot in WWII, this is already the funniest military victory in pop fiction, bar none.
but then you go to how luke wins, aside from the magic powers and the voices in his head; he convinces the local weed guy to get into armed conflict with the military, and the local weed guy shows up in the space equivalent of a VW bus that has a gun duct taped to it, and this is the rig that manages to shoot down darth vader. i should say that by this point in star wars, darth vader has been fighting in war since he was nineteen, and the first time he flew a fighter was when he was nine, he’s widely renowned not only as one of the best pilots in the galaxy, but also as one of the most dangerous people in the galaxy period, like if you let him loose on a battlefield everyone probably just sort of hangs back and lets him massacre everyone. because honestly they’re really just accessories in this. things like “air support” or “artillery” or even “other people with guns” aren’t super necessary because vader’s got the magic powers, the voices in his head, and also a sword that kills people, you know? definitely a couple imperial victories boil down to, “we just told vader to go to work, and then we found a mountain of bodies afterwards.” and this is the guy who gets creamed by a VW bus plus gun. han and chewie fucking scooby and shaggy his ass, and in legends vader ate shit so hard he spiraled out of control, crashed on a planet in the middle of nowhere, and promptly went kind of crazy and decided to slum it with - and i shit you not - a pack of literal space hyenas, who adopted him as their king. he then became the only fucking survivor of the entire ordeal. we really don’t appreciate how fucking funny this is.

They will do everything they can to reach someone who is lost to them, but you still go in with the understanding that you may be forced to kill them. (This is exactly what George Lucas says Obi-Wan is preparing Luke for in ROTJ.) Names have meaning, Obi-Wan argues. The lives we live are what give meaning to the galaxy. If all you are is death, what use do these names have for you, when you so clearly react to them? (”That name no longer has any meaning for me,” Darth Vader will say.) Obi-Wan holds Mekedrix and puts a steadying hand on Anakin’s shoulder, reaches out with a lifeline for someone who is suffering because of an inevitable death. (As Luke will hold Anakin, while Obi-Wan reaches out to help Anakin to the other side.) HELP, I AM SUFFERING BECAUSE OF STAR WARS.

What I love about Anakin in this issue is that it reads very much like him desperately clawing onto these ideas with a death grip, that it’s both foreshadowing and projection, but not in clean, perfect 1:1 lines, it’s more like echoes and reverberations. That it’s both showing the good AND the hypocrisy in Anakin. (Or at least that’s how I’m choosing to read it. XD)
I mean, yeah, Anakin clings to everything in his life until he decides to genocide it all, but I think I’m also reading this as Anakin just being the giant hypocrite that he is, too. Murder is bad right up until it’s not. Thinking someone or something is beyond saving is bad right up until it’s something ANAKIN has decided is beyond saving. Because Anakin will never think he’s wrong, Anakin can’t admit to his own foibles and mistakes. He’ll justify every action he makes down to literal child murder. This panel also makes me laugh because Anakin saying “the Republic isn’t beyond saving” can also be compared to the fact that he already thinks the system doesn’t work and wants to change a democracy into a dictatorship. Like that’s a very real thing he believes. He already thinks it’s beyond saving lol. He just won’t admit it. Like it MIGHT be showing the “good” in Anakin, but that good is already dampened by the fact that we know he doesn’t REALLY believe it. It’s diminished by the fact that he is already a baby murderer, so he clearly doesn’t REALLY believe murder is bad. He already thinks murder’s fine under the right circumstances. He already is FINE with deciding an entire SPECIES is beyond saving because he says they are, so he doesn’t really believe that no one is beyond saving. I just don’t believe Anakin ever suffers all much from guilt over the Tuskens. We never see him suffering from it. Just suffering over the loss of Shmi. And that’s so clear here, too, that he can say these things and not recognize he’s already exactly the person who believes the opposite of what he’s saying. Because killing the Tuskens wasn’t murder, it wasn’t the SAME. It was justice. And justice is good.

I think that hits it exactly spot on, that I do think Anakin still has good in him–he *has* to have good in him, otherwise the movies as a whole fall apart–and he knows that what he’s saying is the right thing, in this moment he believes it’s the right thing. But it’s the same as how he teaches on the Jedi teachings to Ahsoka and Rex, that they have to be prepared to put duty ahead of their personal desires, have to be prepared that things might not work out. He genuinely believes what he’s saying! But the moment that it applies to HIM, all his beliefs are dust in the wind. Both horrendous and sad–he believes people shouldn’t be murdered, until HE needs to murder them. He believes that the system is worth saving, until HE wants to force people to do what he wants. He believes people can always be saved until HE doesn’t think HE’S worth saving. Anakin Skywalker had the training and the knowledge to understand what was right and wrong, he *knew* what was right and wrong, it just crumbles into ash as soon as his feelings overwhelm him.
The entire comic really feels like a rhyme and echo of Anakin’s bigger story, where one of the fundamental aspects of his character is that he knows the difference between right and wrong, but his fears eat him so terribly when it comes to himself, that he justifies terrible things and refuses to look any deeper. That’s why the comic worked so well for me, because I think it’s acknowledging that Anakin Skywalker has done and will do terrible things, so I can see the good in him here, that his sorrow at killing someone is genuine, but that it’s also ultimately going to be a drop in the bucket of what he’s going to do or what he’s already done. But that doesn’t negate that there’s genuine regret and genuine good in him, there has to be for ROTJ to work, just on a pure storytelling level. But also that’s the tragedy of Anakin Skywalker for me, that he does terrible, terrible things, that he genuinely has such light in him, that he really was trying to do good, but that his fears consumed him, his fear of really looking into himself was just too much, he couldn’t face it. And that’s on him, but when it’s acknowledged like this (or at least in the way I’m reading into it!) I am there with bells on for how bad I feel for Anakin.

WHAT IS THE EARN IT ACT?
The EARN IT Act has been roundly condemned by nearly every major LGBTQ+ advocacy and human rights organization in the country. This is a bill that will make children less safe, undermine online safety and security, and trample free expression, because it carves out another exception to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA 230), which the ACLU describes as “foundational to modern online communications.” This has been the law that has let the internet grow into what it is today, we’ve had this law since the 90s. (For context, Trump wanted to get rid of this law because he knew it would lead to mass govt surveillance and censorship of minorities online.)
The EARN IT Act will lead to online censorship. Platforms will be incentivized to scan their users’ communications and censor all sex-related content, including sex education, literally anything lgbt, transgender or non-binary education and support systems, and sex worker communication according to the ACLU. All this in the name of “protecting kids” and “fighting CSEM”, both of which the bill does nothing of the sort. In fact it makes fighting CSEM even harder.
If this bill passes, we're going to see most, if not all, adult content and accounts removed from mainstream platforms, for fear of the liability that could come with ever accidentally hosting CSAM, as well as the erasure of end-to-end encryption on messaging platforms.
This is really not a drill. Anyone who makes or consume anything “adult” online has to be prepared to fight Sen. Blumenthal's EARN IT Act, brought back from the grave by a bipartisan consensus to destroy Section 230.
EARN IT will open the way for politicians to define the category of “pornography" as they — or the lobbies that fund them — please, (Right now, right wing organizers are catgorizing books about racism as ‘porn’ to ban them from schools) which is a cherished goal of organizations that seek to reintroduce obscenity prosecutions for content now protected by Free Speech jurisprudence. This will 1000000% be used to eradicate anything LGBT online.
What this bill says it does on the surface is make platforms liable for their users’ activity if that activity involves sex and minors. However, because of 230, platforms are not liable at all about their users' activity. This has allowed platforms to grow and thrive and many niches online to as well. The bill also creates an unelected commission to create “best practices” to combat online child sexual exploitation. While these recommendations are nominally voluntary (so Americans have no decision on who gets to be on it), platforms that refuse to comply will be liable for criminal prosecutions and lawsuits should the government decide any of their users is engaging in online child sexual exploitation.
This is already a nightmare enough. But the bill also DESTROYS ENCRYPTION, you know, the thing protecting literally anyone or any govt entity from going into your private messages and emails and anything on your devices and spying on you.
This bill is going to finish what FOSTA/SESTA started. And that should terrify you.
Senator Blumenthal (Same guy who said ‘Facebook should ban finsta’) pushed this bill all of 2020, literally every activist (There were more than half a million signatures on this site opposing this act!) pushed hard to stop this bill. Now he brings it back, doesn’t show the text of the bill until hours later, and it’s WORSE. Instead of fixing literally anything in the bill that might actually protect kids online, Bluemnthal is hoping to fast track this and shove it through, hoping to get little media attention other than propaganda of "protecting kids" to support this shitty legislation that will harm kids.
The entire EARN IT act is based on *multiple* misunderstandings of the law and reality. It's a really really really bad policy that will do serious harm. But because Senator Blumenthal wants headlines, he'll pretend that it "helps protect the children." It won't. It'll do real damage. It will make CSEM much much worse.
One of the many reasons this bill is so dangerous: It totally misunderstands how Section 230 works, and in doing so (as with FOSTA) it is likely to make the very real problem of CSAM worse, not better. Section 230 gives companies the flexibility to try different approaches to dealing with various content moderation challenges. It allows for greater and greater experimentation and adjustments as they learn what works -- without fear of liability for any "failure." Removing Section 230 protections does the opposite. It says if you do anything, you may face crippling legal liability. This actually makes companies less willing to do anything that involves trying to seek out, take down, and report CSAM because of the greatly increased liability that comes with admitting that there is CSAM on your platform to search for and deal with. This liability would allow anyone for any reason to sue any platform they want, suing smaller ones out of existence. Look at what is happening right now with book bans across the nation with far right groups. This is going to happen to the internet if this bill passes.
(Remember, the state department released a report in December 2021 recommending that the government crack down on "obscenity" as hard the Reagan Administration did. If this bill passes, it could easily go way beyond shit red states are currently trying. It is a goldmine for the fascist right that is currently in the middle of banning every book that talks about race and sexuality across the US.)
NCOSE, the far right anti-LGBT hate group behind the global anti-sex legislations, is pushing the idea that any form of sexual expression, including talking about HEALTH, leads to sex trafficking. Their goal is to eliminate all sex, anything gay, and everything that goes against their idea of ‘God’ from the internet and hyper disney-fy and sanitize it. This is a highly coordinated attack on multiple fronts.
The reason these bills keep showing up is because there is this false lie spread by organizations like NCOSE that platforms do nothing about CSEM online. However, platforms are already liable for child sexual exploitation under federal law. Tech companies sent more than 45 million+ instances of CSAM to the DOJ in 2019 alone, most of which they declined to investigate. This shows that platforms are actually doing everything in their power already to stop CSEM by following already existing laws. The Earn It Act includes zero resources for proven investigation or prevention programs. If Senator Bluementhal actually cared about protecting youth, why wouldn’t he include anything to actually protect them in his shitty horrible bill?
The Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) along with a coalition of 26 civil society organizations urged the United States Senate to reject the EARN IT Act. Groups on the left and right, including the ACLU, Fight for the Future, EFF, and Hacking // Hustling oppose it. Because it threatens free expression online and will threaten marginalized people’s safety while being totally unnecessary and failing to fix the problem it claims to address. The EARN IT Act empowers states to give law enforcement access to users’ private conversations and force companies to create encryption backdoors for law enforcement. This is totally unnecessary. Platforms are already handing over CSAM to the federal government. It’s actually likely to make prosecuting child molesters more difficult since evidence collected this way likely violates the Fourth Amendment and would be inadmissible in court.
I don't know why so many Senators are eager to cosponsor the "make child pornography worse" bill, but here we are.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
EARN IT Act was introduced yesterday! And it’s already scheduled to get marked up, which is the first step post-introduction. Most bills never go to markup, so this means they are putting pressure to move this through. IF YOU LIVE IN THESE STATES (IL, VT, CA, RI, MN, DE, CT, HI, NJ, and GA), CONTACT YOUR SENATOR AND HOUSE MEMBERS NOW. THIS IS URGENT. This is who gets first crack, and folks in all have Senators who are on the Judiciary committee.
I'm guessing this month or March is when the bill would be passed if there is no opposition 😭 The bill was re-introduced yesterday, already set for markup this Thursday. This feels like an attempt to fast track it this month. Additionally the current makeup of Congress favors those who want it passed. Back in 2020 it was mostly Senate republicans and democrats who are basically republicans (just like now, check the sponsors) pushing it with Ron Wyden using the filibuster to stop their efforts. The house dems didn't want to give Trump a win and needed to appear as pro-privacy/free speech for the 2020 election. Now the dems have the presidency, both chambers of Congress and if you've noticed have spent a few years repeatedly demanding social media censorship and desperately want to give Biden victories. biden isn't like obama who opposed sopa/pipa to appeal to younger voters. This is similar to how FOSTA passed with the group who made it happen last time back again. Far as I'm aware Wyden hasn't spoken about new earn it yet but even if he does oppose it, it's very possible there will be enough Senate democrats to join the republicans in passing it beating a filibuster. Then pelosi's band of house idiots pass it and we have to choose between breaking the law because they can't stop us from using encryption or being obedient sheep to a group who consider themselves above laws.
It already has a fifth of the Senate cosponsoring it. There is a very very very real chance this bill becomes law. This is an uphill battle that's going to happen fast and quick. PLEASE, FIGHT NOW.

Was just informed by my mom that I do in fact have ADHD and the reason I thought I didn’t was because ever since I was seven whenever I got super energetic my mom would have me go chop wood so now when I’m feeling The ADHD I go chop wood and I thought it was just some sort of routine I started when I was little and wanted to blow off steam
