Heyo there, we’re the Mintaka/Onism system.

Ao3 account // Current WIP: Delusions in Blood Testing (new fic/Genshin Impact fic), “If It’s You, Only for You”(Aesvic fic) , and Limerance

We’re an adult who heavily enjoys several fandoms, with the current main interest being Identity V! Read below for more information about the Hollow Knight aus or ourselves!

it’s really important that you are a little bit in love with your friends btw. it’s crucial even

a lot of people seem confused by this post so i’ll clarify: this does not have to mean you’re romantically involved w your friends. you can love them very intensely but platonically. you can let the lines blur if you want. what matters is that you adore the ppl you choose to surround yourself with. the details of that aren’t so important as long as you and your friends are on the same page about it. hope this helps

Reminder that CDDs are, at the end of the day, dissociative disorders. Focusing too much on the presence or absence of alters can be unproductive at best and destructive at worst. When you focus too much on the alters aspect of these disorders, you may start to overlook the other symptoms: amnesia, memory loss, dissociation, identity confusion, behavior changes, trauma flashbacks, and so forth. Sometimes, figuring out the different alters and their roles or specific memories or behaviors can be beneficial. But don't let that blind you to the other aspects of the disorder.

COLOR SYMBOLISM IN HELLO CHARLOTTE — AN ANALYSIS

Heya I adapted my twitter thread about this (which i’m still proud of) since I won’t use my account anymore and I don’t wanna lose it.

I will also. fix some english mistakes that I made before bc english is not my first language. But anyways, let’s begin!

Before anything, I want to bring the quote that makes a huge importance in the game. When Umbrella Man gave Charlotte the ribbon, he says that “We are born colorless and people bring us color” By that, it means that color means connection with other people. Keep it in mind. Let’s begin with the color that I could analyse really quickly, since it’s only reflected in one character:

RED

Red can be associated with love and passion, but when used excessively it can be linked to danger and violence. And most importantly: Red is associated with blood The only one character that is extremelly associated is red is Scarlett Eyler.

With monochromatic eyes and clothes, her ribbon and hair color emphasizes the color red. And like I said before, when red it’s overused it can be associated with danger and violence.

In true realm, Scarlett Eyler was literally Charles worst nightmare. Threatening him, hurting him and making his life hell multiple times. She was the true definition of violence.

And not just that. Remember when I said that red is related to blood? Well…  Scarlett Eyler was Charles unborn sister. She died inside Lilith’s womb. She has no phisical image. So, Scarlett was most associated with blood. Now, let’s move on to the next color:

YELLOW

Yellow is mostly associated with happiness, optimism and positivity. But, psychologically, yellow too makes people more analytical and think critically about themselves and others.

Mixing yellow, associated with cheerfulness and optimism with white (which means innocence and purity, but I’ll talk about it later), Charlotte brings the energy of a perfect protagonist. With only her shirt and skirt being black, to equilibrate the energy between the colors.

image

Even if Umbrella Man and Charles are most associated with black, yellow can be predominant to them too. Since both of them are observers in the game. A bright yellow can be associated with “warning”, which explains why every character possessed by them gets a yellow eye color.

image

Now let’s get into the three most important colors in the games. First of them:

BLACK

Black can be associated with mystery and the unknown. And negatively, black can symbolize death, and evilness. But, most importantly, black is the color that absorbs light.

Wearing full black clothes with black hair, Charles is one of the characters that are most associated with darkness during the whole game. The contrast between black and white is really emphatized in the game, mainly by The Tale of Ink Princess.

Now I want to jump off topic to talk about the relation between The Tale Of Ink Princess and Charles. It says that the ink princess swamed in the ocean and polluted it, and it kinda resembles Charles’ suicide, when he drowns in the ocean that is coincidentally designed black like ink. “Every morning she put on a pitch-black ink dress and combed her black hair. […] The Princess swam in the sea, admiring how vast and clear it was, and all the fish died from pollution.“Please leave these lands! Can’t you see everything is dying?” the peasants begged the Princess. ”

Ink, in Hello Charlotte, is associated with corruption and consequentially, death.

Charlotte, due to the Oracle in her head, gets the Ink Cough. It kinda relates a little to assotiation with black. And since black is a color that absorbs all light, the association with ink is direct.

image

When we talk about mystery and unknown, we come to the most mysterious character in the games: Seth Eyler/Umbrella Man, which color palette matches Charles, but has different meanings

Umbrella Man can be associated with the interpretation of the color black that, too matches power and evil.

And not only him, actually. His (almost) full black sprite is similar to V19 for a reason. Both of them are powerful characters that carries mystery and malice in their development, that’s why they have almost the same sprites.

Now, I’m going to mention a color that I didn’t analyze back then and I completely regret, since it’s also one of the most important colors in the game:

GREY

Grey is a mix between black and white. According to color psychology, grey means “neutrality and balance”. It can be a realiable and stable color, but in negative circumstances, it can mean loss and depression.

In the Grey Ending in Hello Charlotte EP2, shows a Vincent that “became like anyone else” after he lost the Trial. Then, the true face of Vincent is showm before his death.

image

He became the real Vincent, the imperfect Vincent. The neutral Vincent. And not the pure white Vincent Charles tend to idolize. Which resembles the Vincent shown in True Realm on Hello Charlotte EP3, which has grey hair and eye-color.

image

The reason why Etherane changed his true realm version’s hair and eye-color is unknown, (i mean, Vincent’s hair and eye-color also changes in Heaven’s Gate so I can’t say if that was just a design choice if there was something else involved) but since both colors are still considered “gray” in Pantone (changed from something similar to Oyster Gray to Gray Violet), the meaning of the design choice might have not changed.

In the Grey Ending, is shown that Vincent’s soul cube is also Gray, meaning that it can be the color that represents him. Since the other soul cubes might have been probably white (by the description of an unused soul cube item)

image

So, even if Vincent were constantly associated with pure and perfect white, Charles deep inside knew that the Vincent outside his distorted view is a balanced grey. Human, imperfect, but also reliable, mature and calm. Which reflects his personality based on what we saw about him.

Also, Vincent is the character Charles saw dying multiple times, in True Realm and Fake Realm, which made him relive is trauma about his loss over and over again. Then, Vincent’s melancholy and Charles’ loss can be associated with the color grey.

Now, the best for the last. The color that describes mostly the development of the games.

WHITE

White is the color that symbolizes cleanliness, purity and innocence, and even perfection. When we talk about the color white, two characters instantly pop up in our minds: C and Q84.

Let’s bring back what Umbrella Man said: “We are born colorless. It’s the people we meet who give us color.”, So, color is associated with connections. Every Charlotte borns totally white. Like her hair and eyes. Scarlotte was given the Yellow color with the ribbon gifted to her. However, let’s talk about Q84. She was bullied during her whole life (like every charlotte is designed to be), and the only characters that should’ve bring her joy, constantly tries to kill her. With that, Q84 associated connection with pain. By that color = pain.

It kinda explains the design of the bullies. A colorful mess that resembles visual pollution in a way.

With that, she says that she “won’t become tained with ugly colors” and became obsessed with the color white. So much she spread White Flu to create a cult, based on the white color.

Now that’s going to be pure speculation, but the huge presence of the color white in the games and in some characters could be a manifestation of Charles’ mysophobia, since white can mean cleanliness and purity. And like that, let’s talk about C. First of all, I want to point that C’s hair color is brighter in fake realm because of Charles’ perception of him, like I explained when talking about the color grey. Of someone pure and perfect. With white clothes and gloves, the only manifestation of other colors in his design are his yellow eye color (due to Charles possession) and the bruises in his face caused by the bullies. The only two connections he got.

Anyway, despite meaning “perfection” and “purity”, white can also mean “cold” and “distant”. In Charles’ perspective of Vincent, he was perfect, pure, and almost god-like. But, he was still distant from him. The image of C was far away from his reality. And those meanings can relate to Q84, too. Refusing to connect with people, Q84 is untouchable, too perfect, and distant from others. That’s why she’s the only Charlotte with a full-white color scheme. The exaggeration of the color white could symbolize these negative aspects. With that, I finish my analysis. Thanks for reading until the end! I wrote most of these like almost 2 years ago, and since I’m studying Graphic Design and Color Theory I decided to revisit this thread and post it here. Well, have good day everyone! <3

One common Undertale misconception that really frustrates me is when Sans is portrayed with a strong innate sense for RESETs and alternative timelines. Like, that he remembers the RESET timelines better than the other characters who only have occasional feelings of deja vu or even that he can sense when a timeline is RESET.

And that’s, like, almost the opposite of the actual text of the game. While pretty much every main character can have slightly-different dialogue in a Not-True-RESET, especially if the Player had previously befriended them, based on the idea that they have lingering memories/feelings from before the RESET -

Sans has no real dialogue changes based on this conceit. All of his changes are based around noticing Frisk has different reactions based on their memories of the precious timelines.

Other characters do also make observations like that about Frisk, like Mettaton and Toriel. But Sans is distinctive because this is the only way his comments change between RESETs and there are a lot of them from him.

Because that is what really frustrates me about this misconception. People mention it as one more thing that makes Sans cool - but the actual truth is far more badass. Sans is one of the people in the Underground who remembers RESETs the least. I think memory-resistance to RESETs is probably tied to Determination. Flowey, the second-most Determined person in the Underground after Frisk, can remember everything perfectly.

Everyone else has some vague feelings and deja vus. And Sans, he’s the least motivated person in the Underground - both in the sense he’s lazy and in the sense he’s fucking depressed.

That probably means he has very little Determination. Thus, he doesn’t remember anything that happens between RESETs.

And yet, he is still the character most aware of them. Because he has the technological know-how to read and analyze timelines.

And because he has the observation and analytical skill to notice a RESET from other people’s reactions and behavior. Whatever it’s Papyrus thinking he recognizes someone or Frisk’s behavior implying that they know something they shouldn’t have. Sans main RESET-related skill is just being able to identify these moments and come to the correct conclusion about them. And with that he manages to be the most aware character in the entire Underground.

Like, the one point where it might seem like Sans remembers something from a previous Timeline is the Fake Spare scene during his boss battle.

But it’s all pretend. Unlike the previous lines from other characters that I mentioned, this dialogue plays even if the Murder Route is the first time the player touched the game. Sans isn’t remembering anything in this scene. But he makes an educated guess that the Immoral Time God probably tried using their powers for good at first, so they were likely ‘friends’ in a previous timeline. And in most cases, his guess is right on the money - tricking many players into thinking this is another case of the game actually reacting to their past actions.

And as always, Sans can only tell if his lil’ trick worked or not based on the expression of the Player Character.

Arguably, Sans even uses his lack of Determination and cross-RESET memory to his advantage in his boss battle. After all, the whole point of this fight isn’t to kill the Player - Sans understands this is impossible. This is a war of attrition, trying to get the Player so frustrated and annoyed with the unfair fight that they just ragequit or RESET the Timeline. And this war of the Player’s patience versus Sans’ stamina and will is infinitely easier for him when he doesn’t actually perceive all the Player’s previous attempts against him.

Like, for the Player this might be the billion time they go up against him, they’re aware of some of his patterns and tricks now but they’re probably also frustrated and angry and exhausted. Meanwhile, from Sans’ POV, this is still the first time this is happening. He knows it’s not from the Player’s behavior and Frisk’s expression - but he doesn’t feel it like the Player does.

He doesn’t feel the frustration and repetition of the endless stalemate. So he’s always as fresh as a daisy no matter how rugged the Player is getting.

And that’s part of why Sans is so cool in the first place, like, in general. He’s technically the weakest person in the Underground, lacking in every standard evaluation of power in the setting - no ATK, no DEF, no HP, no DETERMINATION. But he’s darn clever enough to overcome these weaknesses and even use them in ways that make them into strengths, enough to be one of the most dangerous and most aware guys in this whole setting.

Sans can’t remember anything, and that makes him awesome.

It’s so fucking infuriatingly frustrating that so many of ao3′s userbase is so adamant that ao3 is nonprofit even though it’s owned by a corporation so that shit is a fucking lie in of itself, like. They invest in stocks and constantly people try and push this stupid as fuck idea that there’s no ads!! :)) it’s free!! when it’s been in beta for literal fucking years with one of the worst filtration and blocking systems I’ve seen to date and rampant disgusting nsfw that’s unregulated and crops up to previews for themes anyways so why do we constantly have to have mile long posts defending such a fundamentally bad website from it’s core instead of actually thinking critically for once I fucking hate all of you.

Normally I ignore this stuff, but the insinuation that AO3 is secretly some manipulative scheme to enrich people is just blatantly false.

so many of ao3′s userbase is so adamant that ao3 is nonprofit

Yeah because it is. Look up the Organization for Transformative Works in the IRS database of tax exempt organizations, or GuideStar’s non-profit report listing. EIN 38-3765024, BRIDGE Number 5584273916.

Let’s check out their Form 990 and see how much they paid their staffers:

And it’s a whooping $0.00.

They invest in stocks

Oh heaven forbid. It’s pretty standard for any moderately-sized nonprofit to make conservative investments, so that their reserves do more than simply accrue interest in a bank account. Nobody is taking a vacation to Comoros on that money.

“Once nonprofits get larger, however, some are able to start thinking for the future. Taking money and putting it toward longer-term goals like capital spending or a permanent endowment requires prudent investment. In order to take initial seed money and grow it into a substantial nest egg for use toward those longer-term charitable purposes, nonprofits are allowed to invest in stocks, bonds, funds, and other typical investments.”

it’s owned by a corporation

Yes, AO3 is part of the Organization for Transformative Works, which is indeed incorporated. Again, pretty standard for a charity. Let’s review the OTW’s Certificate of Incorporation:

it’s been in beta for literal fucking years

Finally… who cares? Gmail was in beta for five years, and that was with all the resources of Google behind it and 100 million people already using it.

“the label is just a way for Google to signal users that they’re still tweaking the e-mail service and adding new features”

Same thing for AO3. The reason AO3 is in beta is because it doesn’t have a finalized codebase and it’s too unstable to make an API out of. They could put out a post tomorrow saying ‘we’re out of beta’ and nobody would bat an eye. The website isn’t perfect, but it’s more than functional. And yes, there are a lot of features that can’t be added without overtaxing the existing hardware resources, so why not try a GreasyFork userscript?

tl;dr - I have to write this every year, but AO3 is still not a scam. It is a non-profit. None of the staffers even get paid. It exists solely for a charitable purpose, a purpose which has been acknowledged and validated by the Internal Revenue Service.

I’m sorry but OP’s “one of the worst filtration and blocking systems“ has me in stitches as if the tagging system on Ao3 wasn’t the envy of libraries, school and universities WORLD-WIDE just because OP has to select the tags to exclude THEMSELF oh no, the horror

pioneering something called "gritted teeth optimism" where everything is gonna turn out okay even if i have to bite and claw and gnash my way through it

Everything's gonna be fine and it's not negotiable.

Ok it’s a poll it’s not that serious but there is something funny about the non-writers voting the most and not reblogging the poll to get more results. Like that’s the most accurate representation of fic interaction on this website 💀

Every single time I see a take that amounts to "if you write about X happening, or like fiction where X happens, you like X" I'm reminded of this one time I was at a casual friends house as a young kid. We were in her room, pretending to "be orphans" escaping from an evil orphanage and having to take care of each other and fend for ourselves. It was all very Little Orphan Annie/All Dogs Go to Heaven and based on the 80s pop media.

And this girl's mom comes in, hears what we're playing and gets all MAD and UPSET. She says that if we play act something, it's because we want it to happen. So her daughter must WANT HER TO DIE.

First off lady, we were 6 year year olds, so take it down several notches. We barely had a concept of mortality for fucks sake. She made us feel so guilty and ashamed, because she was taking our game personally.

Now I have a 5 year old. And sometimes she looks at me and says "pretend you're dead, and I have to -" Whatever it is. Some adult task she's assigned herself.

And it's just so transparently obvious that she's practicing the idea of having to do things on her own. Which is exactly what 5 year olds are supposed to do. I actually find it very flattering that the only way she can envision me not being available to help her is to be literally deceased. Otherwise, obviously, she wouldn't have to do scary hard things alone.

It's a natural coping mechanism. She's self-soothing about what would happen if I wasn't there by play-acting independence in a perfectly safe environment. She's also practicing skills she needs, and making up excuses for practicing them on her own, without taking on the responsibility of being able to do them by herself all the time yet.

Humans mentally rehearse bad this in their brains all the time. We can do that by ruminating- going over worries over and over again, which tends to lead to anxiety and helplessness and depression. Or we can do it with a sense of play- by recognizing that the fiction is fiction and we can dip our toe into these experiences and expose ourselves to bad things without actually being injured.

My daughter does not want me dead. And I don't want bad things to happen in real life. But fiction and pretend help me face the horrors of the world and think about them without collapsing or messing myself up mentally.

Exactly this.

fiction is a safe space to think of unsafe things if you feel it's messing you up, step away. don't assume it's messing everyone up and you need to eradicate it because you caught a case of the feel-bads from something. go sit with that and think about why instead of pissing in everyone else's cheerios.
