shout out to people who's family isnt entirely bad or entirely good, but something in between and you dont know how to feel about them. you feel angry but you also feel guilty, because you know they genuinely love and care about you, but sometimes they show it in a way you know its not okay. your feelings are valid, your anger and sadness and grief are valid, and you dont have to prove this to no one. bigger shout out to those with memory issues who know something isnt right but can't recall all of the bad events, only the feelings, which only increases the guilt.

I know, I know, gatekeeping the outdoors, that's supposedly bad, right, but I think if you show up to do a hike and you brought a portable speaker with you to play music while you hike, I think, like hear me out, there should be a gate, and someone at the gate should keep you from doing the hike.

Carrying a speaker on a hike to make everyone listen to your bullshit, and simply sitting under a tree and playing a fiddle in the woods, are two activities so different they may as well not exist in the same world.

I think the critical difference is that the bringing of recorded music with you ties the space to Elsewhere, whereas the creation of live music with an instrument you brought both binds you to the space, and drags everyone who hears you play into it as well.

As someone who’s living with a middle school social studies teacher, all the posts along the lines of “why did we never learn about this historical event in school” just make me go “because your teacher was supposed to cover all of US history in one year, and they didn’t get to the Revolutionary War until Halloween because they were urged to slow down the progression of the lessons because a more senior teacher was running behind, and they didn’t get to the Civil War until Valentine’s Day because the school kept scheduling every special event during social studies because there’s no end-of-grade testing for that subject, and they didn’t get to WWI until May because they were sick for a few days and the substitute couldn’t do much more than babysit, and now they’re having to do the entire Cold War in two days, so that’s why you didn’t hear about the lesbian inventor of the circus peanut. They would have loved to tell you about the lesbian inventor of the circus peanut!”

as a homeschooler who had a very intensive history education, here's another reason that complaint always bothers me:

your education was supposed to prepare you to spend the rest of your life self-educating.

maybe your education was actually kind of shitty and told you things that were outright lies or simplifications; maybe it was good but they didn't explain THAT point. but honestly it doesn't matter how many wonderful anecdotes or stories in history your teachers might have WANTED to share. your primary and secondary school education was intended to give you a broad overview and equip you with the tools to continue to educate yourself for the rest of your life. if you've learned more since graduating, then you're doing it!

do you know how vast the sum of human history alone is? not even ecological/animal/earth/space history! do you know how miserable education would be if teachers tried to shove every single potentially interesting anecdote or event into class time?

your education could have failed you in SO many ways, but if you can read and absorb new information, then having the tools to live in a world where you get to keep learning and discovering new things is a success!!

Honestly my best advice for any trans woman coming here from Twitter is to obviously install shinigami eyes so that you can tell who's a crypto terf or whatever. But also to genuinely just search terf and radfem keywords and just go down the list and block like 300 people.

And then to take that a step further (because no amount of blocking is enough unfortunately) when they start interacting with your content, don't just block that person, take the time to go through their blog and block who they reblog from. Then if you notice one name popping up in the notes more than usual, go to that person's blog and do the same thing.

Deny then access. Don't prune the weeds, scorch the earth.

It is ALWAYS okay to tell someone you follow “heyo this post turned up red.” 99.9% of the time you’re going to get some variation on a curse word followed by them deleting the post and thanking you, and the remaining .01% of the time you’ve found a new name for your block list.

it's always kind of funny to me when people insist that honesty is a virtue and you should always tell the truth because being good at lying is something that's been almost universally celebrated for thousands of years by pretty much all of humanity. like there are literally multiple folk tales and legends throughout history and across cultures that involve the hero tricking their adversary in order to win, and it's usually considered a disadvantage to mythical creatures such as faeries that they can't say things that aren't true.
