can someone please explain to me what "one for the money, two for the show means"

it's half of a nursery rhyme that is used for a countdown (the full rhyme is one for the money, two for the show, three to make ready and four to go) by cutting the rhyme in half the narrator is basically saying she never got to three, she never was ready (so she watched him go).
