Ready for the most unhinged Swiftie behaviour.

They SHUT DOWN the area around Margaret Qualley and Jack Antonoff's wedding. Like completely surrounded the area. It is... so unbelievably inappropriate. Police had to be called. Talk about dehumanizing. They made her friends wedding about HER. What did they think was going to happen? I'm appalled and disgusted but not surprised.

Anyone went to this to catch a glimpse of her should be embarrassed. They should carry that embarrassment around with you forever. It's not cringe, its psychotic.

that’s what they did to Abigail when she got married. it’s so fucking wrong and I’m tired of celebrities not speaking out about this kind of “fan” behavior and ignoring it to spare their image. so what if these people get mad? they need fucking called out. maybe the sting will wake them up a bit.

“The very nature of becoming a celebrity encourages parasocial behavior. We don’t demand that other celebrities who get so big they couldn’t live normal lives (Michael Jackson, John Lennon, etc.) be held accountable. But when it comes to Taylor, people twist themselves into knots to make this somehow her fault.”

This is a comment on that thread the anon sent, but I disagree on one thing here, those celebs mentioned there never made their fans believe they were close or their friends, quite the opposite, hell The Beatles even made themselves more unapproachable when they stopped touring because it was becoming uncontrollable and that’s considering that at the time there wasn’t any social media so they were even farther away from the get go, I’m sure not all would listen, but if Taylor said something at least a big part of them would stop, and would change the behaviour of her fandom at the very least, but my guess is that she doesn’t want to risk the revenue those unhinged fans bring, same reason why she didn’t denounce the white supremacy groups back then, so while is not her entire fault, not saying anything doesn’t help either

Anonymous asked:

I think she also doesn't say anything, because part of her kind of likes it this reverence from people yk. She keeps this parasocial relationship going, makes her fandom think they are her besties, lets them hate on other people and dissect her personal life. She does live for the applause, for being liked, the external validation. She waved and smiled to those people outside. Sure as heck that doesn't disencourage them of being there

she’s admitted to feeling that way in some of her songs. she likes the attention because she conflates attention with success/merit. if she’s not being applauded 24/7, she thinks everyone hates her now and doubts her self worth. it’s a really unhealthy way to live and I wish she would just get the help she admits she needs.

EXTREMELY rare w from the uk media

Defamation lawsuits in UK are heavily weighted in *favor* of the plaintiff. You have to have a pretty weak case to lose over there. If there wasn't a rabbid, inescapable social media campaign against Amber Heard, he would have lost in America too.

These tags are very pertinent because they're right. It is a matter of fact in the case that Depp's abuse of her was acknowledged. The fact that the court basically said "yes, he abused you, but talking about it is defamation" when she didn't even use his name in the original piece she wrote should have us all very nervous. It's incredibly frightening legal precedent to set in a world where powerful celebrities use their status to abuse people.

Shoutout to the disabled people who aren't productive, who aren't talented, who aren't functional, who aren't "smart", who aren't "creative", who aren't successful, who aren't impressing anyone whatsoever with their skills and achievements. You don't have to be or do anything to be a worthy and valuable person! Worth is not something you have to earn!

the acting in bridgerton is some of the worst acting I have ever fucking seen.... this show is so awful and useless I am laughing

people supporting bridgerton even though it is a harmful racist piece of media just because this new season has an enemies to lovers romance really shows you the priorities of people. You guys do not give a shit if something is racist or hurtful as long as you get to enjoy that piece of media.

ah yes! multilingual references, the k3g ensemble, a haldi scene, and elaichi in tea yesssss these tiny cultural references totally make up for the fact they're overshadowing and refusing to mention what the br*tish did to indians by turning it into an aesthetic romance in the name of historical fiction yesssss

it’s interesting how both bridgerton and our flag means death approach the aristocracy and high society with almost exactly the same concept: “this is a space full of unspoken social contracts bound by unwritten rules of ‘correct’ behaviour, forged through traditions you will never understand, and if you deviate from it in any way, you will be socially punished”.

and bridgerton whole-heartedly markets this as the central premise for a ~*~romantic escapist fantasy~*~, where the fantasy is the fulfillment of those contracts through successfully navigating that society – sure, you can break rules to “follow your heart” but the key aspect of that escapism is still working to empower yourself within those social constructs, and within socially acceptable parameters of sexuality and gender expression.

meanwhile, our flag frames it as a space that systemically sets you up for trauma – where the punishment is a form of interpersonal violence, where the rules are a framework for abuse of power, where the victory is when you either defy it, defeat it, or escape from it. mary thrives in her widowhood, stede is completely freed when he fakes his death, and highest catharsis in episode 5 isn’t ed successfully navigating the social rules of the dinner party but when stede burns it to the ground. it’s the acknowledgement that these rules are made by power and are used as enforcements of power and to defy it is to take that power for yourself.

like. these two shows are, on a base-level, similar premises: historically inaccurate romance-centred lighthearted shows, but it truly demonstrates how the difference between queer-centric and straight-centric romance media is a ravine.

I know I'm SUPER late to this bridgerton hot takes section but I am ALWAYS willing to share my opinion ESPECIALLY when it's against something I don't like SO::

Legit the entire "rake with a capital R" characters are so gross??? You can argue that they get character development but it's so ICKY when their defining character trait is. Sleeping with dozens of prositutes. IN CONTRAST the female lead is this innocent and virgin girl who has ~no idea~ of what goes on in the bedroom and is simply ~aghast~ at the scandalous ways of her husband! (That's more for s1)

Also the "enemies to lovers" in s2 was LAUGHABLE. It was not /true/ enemies to lovers, they were not serving the way they thought they did!! Oooh let's have one meeting and exchange what some would call witty banter!! I gag!!! I was so disinterested in them it's so hyper realistic

Avatar

ohmygod, lindsay, queen, finally someone has mentioned the Capital R Rake issue with anthony's storyline!!!!!!!!!

Also, I find it jarring how the show continually addresses the misogyny and even classism of the period, but never the racism, because apparently that was not a thing, not in the Regency Era, not today either! /s

saw your reblog about bridgerton and truly felt that- especially during season one. seeing simone ashley and charithra chandran lead this season made me give it a try. enjoyed the leading couple's dynamic but it did make me consider whether desis and poc in general sometimes just... wanna be satisfied with mediocrity in the excitement of some 'representation'? even though the show really just smushed in various south asian traditions and languages from different parts of india into one character. a thing to think on ig.

Avatar

hi! sorry, i saw this in the morning but i had to rush out so i wanted to think on it to give it the answer it deserves.

yeah, simone and charithra were mostly why i decided to give the show a try, and aside from that, i was curious to see how they tackled the elephant in the room that is the colonialism of it all. and i was pretty disappointed and...uncomfortable at how it was handwaved, because i don't know if this was the experience of other indians watching, but i simply could not put it out of my mind. i know it's supposed to be a romantic fantasy and all but...idk, i think it's very insensitive to put two indian women in regency england, and just pretend that the fact that it was beginning of the british's colonial empire in india at the same time doesn't matter. and it felt especially glaring because in the first season, they actually tried to explain the presence of black nobility (which again, was handled in a deeply clumsy, superficial and insincere manner), and in the second season they just act like it was perfectly normal for indians to be welcomed into high society the way kate and edwina were! make it make sense. it feels deeply insensitive and tone deaf, and that's the problem with a show wanting to be and trying to look ~~diverse~~ without actually considering the implications of what they're doing. and all of this for the purpose of not having to deal with the ugly backdrop of their ✨aesthetic✨ period romance.

and i'm not saying that the show is without merits, but all of this, compiled with the absolute disaster that was the first season completely overshadowed any of the merits it might have. and yes, like you said, it really does make me feel that people will be too comfortable with accepting what crumbs of 'representation' is thrown at them, viewing the insensitivity and callousness with which it is handled an inevitable byproduct. OOH and yeah the thing with them just bringing together different traditions and languages from different parts of india for edwina and kate—yikes. that was a huge eyebrow raise for me as well. so, yeah. this is show is a mess lmao and its my villain origin story that there are people out there who will praise it for its 'representation'. i love simone and charithra, and i hope this really helps their career take off, and i also really hope they milk this show for all its worth, they deserve it <3

the discourse around Persuasion (2022) is so annoying because a lot of ppl still think that the quality of a novel to film adaptation is defined by the question of "how accurate is this film compared to the book?" when it's actually more like "how well did the filmmakers utilise visual storytelling techniques to convey what was originally the written word?".

Moreover, half of the "reviews" for Persuasion are just half-baked takes that it "copied" Fleabag as if a) PWB invented the genre of the precarious woman, or the technique of 4th wall breaking, OR b) Fleabag itself wasn't an appropriation of Michaela Coel's Chewing Gum, OR c) PWB wasn't drawing on a long literary tradition (that includes Jane Austen) of exploring the internal lives of women through comedy. Persuasion 2022 isn't bad because it's "trying to be Fleabag" it's bad because it's misusing the same storytelling techniques.

I also find it extremely laughable that so many of the people clutching their pearls over the insincerity of Persuasion 2022 are also Bridgeton fans. Youse have no one to blame but yourselves!!!! Bridgeton practically made the regency period drama into a horny, memeable, self-deprecating racist parody and y'all ate it up!!! Y'all made it one of the most watched series in history!!! And you have the audacity to turn around and question why Netflix made Persuasion in the same disinterested and ironic way??? You reep what you sow!!!

None of this is even to say that I think Persuasion 2022 is Actually Good. It's flawed, but making it even worse is sitting around complaining that a modern VISUAL adaptation of a novel attempted to use modern humour and visual techniques to make a very difficult story more accessible. There's a reason why Persuasion is Austens least adapted novel. If you wanted the book, go read the book!!! If you wanted period dramas to be taken seriously maybe in future you won't hype bullshit period dramas on mass and actually support well made storytelling so that's what you get more of ❤️

one of the funniest scenes in the history of television is the Bee™ scene in bridgerton. how were people swooning over it. the entire thing had me in stitches, if they wanted me to sympathize with anthony's ~~trauma~~ they shouldn't have made it so stupid <3

i can’t see why the bridgerton’s couldn’t have been a blended family the show is going out it’s way to say it’s diverse and that racism isn’t a big deal there why couldn’t they be a blended family of two different races with the younger two or three being mixed

Okay Tumblr NEEDS to stop - this is the second time it has either erased or posted my posts WAY too early. So if anyone was reading that post and it got deleted halfway through I apologise! It wasn’t finished.

Context for everyone else who may have missed it, it was summary/highlights post about Tré Ventour-Griffiths’ The ‘Whites’ Who Loved Me article and it is a brilliant read here if you haven’t already read it:

[Please read it before my post drops cos it’s fully fleshed out and gives so much more context than my summary!]

I’ve been working on my post since yesterday morning 💀💀 and honestly it was just going to be a ‘Hey read this article and here’s a list of my fave parts’ highlights post but of course it’s me 🤡🤡 so it turned into a longer, kind of summary post because I liked all the parts of the article. So I’m trying to tighten my post a little to focus on the Bridgerton of it all! Hopefully I can get it out in a couple hours, I’m about half way through my recap 👍👍

Happy Reading yall!!

[Also feel free to let me know what you think it’s honestly a great discussion piece and conversation the entire fandom needs to have.]

ok if you know me you shouldn’t be surprised to know that i really don’t like bridgerton (i know, shocking, a history buff and writer who openly despises bunk theories and shoddy worldbuilding doesn’t like the show predicated on a bunk theory followed by shoddy worldbuilding, stop the presses), but i have watched it, mostly for background noise, but watched it nonetheless, and i think i finally figured out what irks me not just around season 2 of the dumb show but also the fandom response and reactions to the dumb show.

the show, to my understanding, said prior to the season 2 release that they were treating the story between anthony and the sharma sisters as more of a love triangle (which made a lot of fans mad because edwina’s supposed to be one of those characters who exists solely to cheerlead a different character even if it’s at their own expense which is just the worst kind of character), and so fandom is reacting accordingly by treating this as if it were a “team edwina” and “team kate” situation that you see in other tv show love triangles and the like. but here’s the thing. a love triangle, as understood in most media, is that characters a and b like character c, who likes both of them and is torn for a while before realizing that they like character a/b more and thus ends the love triangle.

except that’s not what season 2 of bridgerton was. it’s not that anthony likes both kate and edwina but ends up choosing edwina for a bit before finally realizing his true feelings lie with kate. anthony doesn’t like edwina at all. i’m fairly convinced that he couldn’t differentiate edwina from eve. anthony shows no care or concern for her at all not even as a love interest, but barely as a person, and has no regard for her personal feelings or wants or objectives or desires or literally anything about her. i’d be genuinely surprised to learn that he’s ever felt anything for her beyond the standard feelings we have towards humanity as a whole in knowing better than to do shit like punch randos on the street. this isn’t necessarily a solely anthony problem, the narrative appears to treat edwina exactly the same way which is bad writing because yes, she’s not one of the Main characters of the season, anthony and kate are, but she’s still a major player nonetheless. nor is this necessarily me writing anthony off, there’s a reason for his asshattery that’s been well established both by backstory and by the canon of the show itself back in season 1. the issue for me is that it doesn’t seem that anyone realizes that this is why anthony and kate were in the wrong with the marriage thing.

edwina got a lot of flack from the fandom for being upset at kate and anthony about the whole wedding fiasco, and for holding a grudge for a while afterwards, and a good chunk of that seems to come from that old gripe i mentioned earlier about how edwina wasn’t following her book characterization of being kanthony’s number one cheerleader. but a lot of it is that i genuinely don’t think people understand what the issue is here. yeah, anthony deciding to marry edwina for shallow reasons even tho he knew she wanted a happy love match, while also being into her sister is bad, and kate knowing all of this and still deceiving edwina is also bad. but the core “this is a fucked up thing to do” element in her anger at kate is that kate is very aware of the fact that anthony literally just does not care for or about edwina in any capacity whatsoever beyond what he would care for, like, a lady passing on the street, and she was still willing to lie to edwina and let her enter into a marriage with someone like that, not only not giving edwina the full information to make her own informed consent about whether she wants to be in this marriage, but also just letting her walk into a situation like that knowingly. like, imagine how psychologically damaging it must be to be married, shackled for life, to someone who probably wouldn’t even remember your last name if it wasn’t the same name as the lady he was actually into. that’s a very valid reason for edwina to be mad at the two of them, especially in being mad at kate, considering that a guy screwing you over is one thing, but a close sister doing the same is a whole other level. and if edwina lashes out because that’s a fucked up thing to do, even for the “right reasons”, honestly that’s fair and valid. i love my sister to death but if she was egging on a marriage between me and someone whose only concern about whether i lived or died would be how it affected my sister, i’d be pissed for a really long time.

(and no i’m sorry the “kate was doing it for edwina’s sake like she does everything” doesn’t really fly, you can’t pull the “i do everything for everyone can’t i do this one thing just for me” excuse out when the person you’re “doing everything for” a) never asked you to do it b) never had any expectation for you to do it and c) would have been perfectly content and likely even happier if you hadn’t done. kate’s reasoning is something that needs to get brought up with mary and with idk her regency era version of a therapist, not edwina. that’s not edwina’s responsibility, because most of us generally learn the concept of having to handle our emotions and that how we react to things is on us alone by age ten generally.)

and the worst thing about it is that it’s never resolved. edwina is justifiably angry at the people who hurt her, the fandom’s mad because it’s viewing the situation through a love triangle lens and not the “two people who refuse to admit they wanna fuck and also the poor innocent who got dragged into and very nearly got screwed over as a result” and also because edwina’s being Mean to the primary couple and isn’t hopping up and done in ultimate ship mode for them. and then kate hits her head and that’s it, the justifiable anger is over and done with. i don’t think that edwina should have still been holding a grudge while her sister was dealing with a serious head injury that could have killed her, but that shouldn’t have been the end of the situation. none of edwina’s concerns got addressed or even understood, it’s just that the narrative wanted us to view it as edwina being unreasonable and coming to see the light and the glory of kanthony after nearly losing kate, which makes no sense. as mentioned, edwina’s anger is justifiable, because when you actually look at what happened and not the “love triangle” angle, it is an entirely reasonable anger. that edwina was willing to put it aside when kate was in trouble, because she loves her sister and obviously doesn’t want her dead and is relieved that she’s okay, that works. edwina being immediately over it does not work; her grievances aren’t addressed and it doesn’t seem like the narrative, let alone the characters themselves, understand why she was upset, and thus any reconciliations ring hollow. i mean hell, she doesn’t even get a scene where anthony, like, openly admits that this whole situation was a dick move on his part and sincerely apologize for his behavior and what he put her through, which really only cements how little, if at all, anthony cared about her in any way.

edwina should have been allowed to take her time on forgiveness, and the way that she and kate especially built back trust and rapport should have been vitally important and deep character work, not just for edwina herself and the satisfaction of her arc, but also for kate and for her own development. but instead, edwina’s over it, she’s the cheerleader at long, and she gets dangled the possibility of a consolation prize as her reward for no longer being upset at her fiancé for being an ass and at her sister for violating her trust and nearly putting her a deeply unhappy situation for the remainder of her natural life. it’s bad writing to the extreme and it also makes kanthony both as a ship and as individual people seem like jerks and the total misread of the situation and the hate edwina got for her reaction just makes the fandom seem borderline illiterate.

anyway this is rambly and not very eloquent and likely riddled with spelling errors but i woke up at 5am and made myself mad about this while getting ready for the day so this is my two cents on a specific element i hate about the dumb bridgerton show and its dumb ways.
