“When she applied to run in the Boston Marathon in 1966 they rejected her saying: “Women are not physiologically able to run a marathon, and we can’t take the liability.” Then exactly 50 years ago today, on the day of the marathon, Bobbi Gibb hid in the bushes and waited for the race to begin. When about half of the runners had gone past she jumped in. She wore her brother’s Bermuda shorts, a pair of boy’s sneakers, a bathing suit, and a sweatshirt. As she took off into the swarm of runners, Gibb started to feel overheated, but she didn’t remove her hoodie. “I knew if they saw me, they were going to try to stop me,” she said. “I even thought I might be arrested.” It didn’t take long for male runners in Gibb’s vicinity to realize that she was not another man. Gibb expected them to shoulder her off the road, or call out to the police. Instead, the other runners told her that if anyone tried to interfere with her race, they would put a stop to it. Finally feeling secure and assured, Gibb took off her sweatshirt. As soon as it became clear that there was a woman running in the marathon, the crowd erupted—not with anger or righteousness, but with pure joy, she recalled. Men cheered. Women cried. By the time she reached Wellesley College, the news of her run had spread, and the female students were waiting for her, jumping and screaming. The governor of Massachusetts met her at the finish line and shook her hand. The first woman to ever run the marathon had finished in the top third.”

here she is in 2021 with her own statue, which, by the way, she sculpted herself

From a queer elder…

Being queer isn’t supposed to be palatable to non-queers.

We don’t tick little squares on a checklist of “queer enough”, we obliterate the checklist.

We defy societal norms that say our bodies, families or relationships have to look a certain way.

Queer is the insult we took away from oppressors. We’re here, we’re queer, get used to it.

The people who hate us will hate us regardless of how palatable we make ourselves.

Stop licking fascist boots by policing queers who are queer in different ways than you.

Oh, someone is bi/pan trans lesbian with he/him pronouns? So what! They’re welcome on the rainbow. Their identity doesn’t have to make sense to you, it has to make sense to them.

Our identities don’t make sense to non-queers. They see us as unnatural and disgusting, so why are you turning around and crapping that same garbage out at your own community??

Once you drive the visible queers underground, the same people who hate us all will target you next. Nobody will defend you because you drove away everybody who would have.

Enough already!

— sincerely, an old queer.

Alternative naming scheme to replace the practice of giving Christian names to children in post Revolutionary France. These are the proposed names for children born on 14 Fructidor (31 August), which is the day of the nut (noix). The table shows what you should call your son or daughter depending on what time of that day they are born. I wonder what the names for the other days of the year would be.

Anonymous asked:

what is it like to have to bathe a hairless cat?

(I'm thinking of getting one of those gremlins, so i need to know.)

slippery. giant squirming buttered ravioli. for the love of god do not let it escape because you will never recapture it (too slippery) (slippery all over your house) (horrible)

to everyone being like "but have you tried [insert whatever common tip about bathing cats]"

YES!

I've had koshekh for a year and a half I have tried EVERYTHING and the most successful method is still to hose him down like a wild beast in the shower

how does this get even worse

I think about once in a while…

We have another one…

This is the internet now tho 😭💀

Omg so many additions since I last saw this post! 😂😂😂

It’s funny but incredibly telling how entitled/ignorant/insensitive some of these people are… idk if it’s an education gap or purposeful ignorance.

The really bewildering thing to me is that I remember when you needed to get up and pull a dictionary off the shelf, or visit a library to look up the facts you needed. Now people have all kinds of information literally at their fingertips and they can’t be bothered to use it.

Oh dear gods, it’s gotten worse

When you know politics but no facts

don’t take people too seriously on the internet

This hits different when combined with that “Americans don’t learn other countries exist till they’re in 5th Grade” post from the other day.

Demily recently got another one lads

Also, I love that, in the sign language one, it seems like the last image might’ve been a gif of “fuck you,” screenshot at the perfect time to let you know they were about to sign “fuck you”

As a romanian person I gotta add this one too

This is my favourite post on this website

I have literally had people tell me that I’m a gross appropriator for learning sign language while not deaf.

I sometimes cannot speak, but leaving that aside, what the FUCK lol

I still remember the guy who got mad at me because I spoke about the cultural role of the Norse gods in my life and my culture and insisted that I should be “proud of my Christian heritage instead” and quite simply would not believe me when I told him I was from Scandinavia because “that doesn’t exist anymore.”

someone please edit that map of europe with the spain void to also have a void for the whole of scandinavia

Every now and then I just have to reblog this.

(while particularly loving: “Gender of the Day: Wales”)

Listen I know nothing about the les miserables fandom and honestly i didn't even know there was a fandom but long story short I got my hands on an actual masters thesis based on the fandom writing around les mis and in particular about the ship between enjolras and grantaire (they actually used the term enjoltaire on a real university end of masters thesis) so congrats to the les mis fandom cause you have a strong soldier out there who wrote 30 pages analizing enjoltaire and their ao3 fics.

Coming out of my cage and I've been doing just fine

Gotta gotta be down, because I want it all

The long wavelengths of the light spectrum—red, yellow, and orange—can penetrate to approximately 15, 30, and 50 meters (49, 98, and 164 feet), respectively, while the short wavelengths of the light spectrum—violet, blue and green—can penetrate further, to the lower limits of the euphotic zone. Blue penetrates the deepest, which is why deep, clear ocean water and some tropical water appear to be blue most of the time. Moreover, clearer waters have fewer particles to affect the transmission of light, and scattering by the water itself controls color. Water in shallow coastal areas tends to contain a greater amount of particles that scatter or absorb light wavelengths differently, which is why sea water close to shore may appear more green or brown in color.

no joke we need the 'free the nipple' movement back. what the hell happened.

i have to watch my spinach cook so without getting too into it i genuinely believe the desexualization of bodies and nudity could solve a shit ton of political problems faced with.

i dont know if anything i say ever makes sense, like obvi not eveything. but i think it would be a huge start in equality and treatmeant in not only women's lives but trans and gay people as well; groups of people who are so often sexualized that doing something as simple or innocent that's seen ok from (most, but i'm aware not all) cis men as literally, walking around without a shirt on, is seen as perverted and dangerous. removing this ideology is giving respect to the bodies of those (that is deserved if and when showing sexuality regardless) who often don't have it by just like. existing within a body. anyone here read the left hand of darkness.
