the story: my original ancestor william freeman (1817-1923) was “charged” (accused by the store owner) of stealing cheese in 1828 at 12yrs of age and then sent over to the adjoining county (Wiltshire) (but still within the same state-south west England) for trial and conviction. the evidence by the prosecutor (store owner) was layed to the judge against him and in turn his lawyer/lawyers layed their defence.but he was ultimately found guilty somehow and his sentence was 7 years hard labor in the new country (Australia). William would still have to wait 3 years aboard the prison hulks for transportation... 

note: the english court that sentenced my ancestor must have jurisdiction over the whole state as i find it strange that my ancestor was sent to the next county (highlighted in red) for trial and sentencing seperate from where he was accused. especially considering that “somerset county” had its own capital within “bristol” as noted on the first map.
