I reblog Irish stuff, pretty things, stupid jokes, mental illness/chronic illness & disability stuff, Star Trek, animals, politics, culture, LGBTQ stuff, Pokémon, art. Say hello any time! x

Any Irish people out there need to AMPLIFY BLACK VOICES right now, NOT pretend that Irish people, because of a history of oppression, are not complicit in anti-Black racism. This is a pattern that repeats over and over whenever we see institutional racism in other countries and it needs to stop.

Please consider why this is a a particularly disrespectful thing to do in the context of American police brutality: yes, many Irish people immigrated to America to survive a brutal colonial regime... and they integrated into racist white America so much that by the turn of the century a third of New York Cops were Irish. Irish Americans dominated the police forces of many American cities throughout the 20th century and sometimes still do.

"But it's not like that in Ireland! We're not racist!" Shut up. Yes it is and yes we are. Listen to Black people. Call out your friends. Learn.

ALL of the replies are people going "Mental is hocus, health not pocus" until OP turned off replies, and that is the stuff that keeps my mental hocus healthy and pocused

Israel may be completely converting Palestine into a desert, by uprooting its families, and stripping it of vegetation and water  It was not until after 1948 that 90% of Israeli forests were grown, but non-Indigenous species constitute 89% of them. The majority of trees JNF boasts having planted, since nearly its inception, were non-Native evergreens, which devastated both local communities and ecosystems. For instance, animals belonging to Palestinian shepherds could not feed on greenery, after it was acidified by the shedding of Israeli pine needles. Besides, as evidenced by the most critical wildfire Israel experienced, in 2010, these are highly flammable trees. Israeli planted forests have even been termed ‘pine deserts’, by environmentalists, due to the ‘biological paucity’ they have caused. Furthermore, as Nathan notes, Indigenous carob and fruit trees, including more than 800,000 olive trees, since only 1967, were uprooted by Israel. In Israeli-occupied Palestine, 80% of the responsibility for a staggering 23% reduction in its forests, which occurred from 1971 to 1999, fell on Israeli colonialism and militarism. Only in 2001, the Israeli state uprooted 670,000 fruit and forestry trees there. In addition, research has shown that an-Naqab possibly began to experience desertification due to JNF afforestation. Yet, the ahistorical trope of ‘making the desert bloom’ continues to be widely proliferated by Zionists, assisted by green colonies, to stifle Palestinian memory and erase the Nakba.

olive trees are specifically targeted for uprooting because of their cultural significance to palestinians

Happy birthday, James Connolly! (June 5, 1868)

Born in the Irish ghetto of Cowgate in Edinburgh, James Connolly became a laborer at a young age, and joined the British Army to improve his prospects. However, he developed a hatred for the institution which he would hold his entire life, and eventually deserted. Becoming influenced by the writings of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, Connolly came to identify as a socialist, and would become one of the leading figures in the socialist republican movement in Ireland, and a socialist theorist in his own right. In Ireland, he would become a leader in both the Irish Socialist Republican Party and the Labour Party, which he helped to found. Associated with the syndicalist current known as De Leonism, Connolly spent some time in the United States where he affiliated with the Socialist Labor Party and helped to found the Industrial Workers of the World and the Irish Socialist Federation. Returning to Ireland, he was a leader along with Jim Larkin in the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union, and continued to agitate for Irish independence and a socialist republic. He was a leader in the Easter Rising of 1916, commanding the Dublin Brigade. The rebellion was crushed, and Connolly captured, with his execution coming soon afterward. He has become a national hero in Ireland, with numerous statues and memorials erected to honor his memory and legacy. His dream of an Irish republic united in socialism remains, for now, unfulfilled.

“Revolution is never practical – until the hour of the revolution strikes. Then, it alone is practical, and all the efforts of the conservatives, and compromisers become the most futile and visionary of human imaginings.”

In honor of pride month and the continuing struggle of the Palestinian people, please consider supporting the talented people at Hirbawi by buying a rainbow kufiya (or any other one for that matter) and help keep a traditional craft alive.

🏳️‍🌈🇵🇸

(This really shouldn't have to be said but terfs/swerfs do not touch. This post is for all LGBT+ people)

hirbawi is the last factory in palestine for kufiya. all the rest had to shut down along the years bc of the occupation. please consider supporting them and buying their pride kufiya or any kufiya. i bought their kufiyas myself and theyre top notch - theyre beautiful and really high quality as you would expect from handmade palestinian craft and are so varied and colorful. if you cant buy please consider reblogging and sharing their work.

Man 1: *in the distance, shouting desperately to his sheepdog* "No, Ted! Fucking hell. Away! Away! Ted no!"

Man 2: *behind the camera. Laughing.*

Woman: *behind camera* "What's he trying to get? He's herding up the sheep."

Man 1: "Get here! Here, here, here!"

Woman: "Come on, Ted."

Man 1: *seen in the distance on a 4-wheeler* "No!!"

This is a tea checkpoint.

Is your tea getting cold?

Did you turn on your kettle and forget about it and now the water is cold again?

Is the tea bag still in?

Did you intend to start the tea making process and forget?

Congratulations! You remember now.
