Just for the record, cons are staffed by PEOPLE.
If you think that a staffer should be reprimanded because they said they didn't like another con's *checks notes* "moderated panels" you need some perspective. Humans are allowed to have opinions. Chill.
Additionally, if they're unhappy with the way they were treated by ANOTHER con they staffed (separate from the one they complained about), that is also FUCKING OKAY. That's not "unprofessional." People are allowed to talk about their negative experiences with organizations.
And it may surprise you -- that while this involves a con I help run this is not about me. I am, surprisingly, not a party to this. I'm just our communications person, so I see the emails and tweets about it.
For context: Not long ago one of our staffers tweeted at another con that "no one likes moderated panels." This staffer was, at the time, also on the staff of another anime con. We'll call them Con B. Someone reaches out to Con B about the tweet, and Con B reprimands them over it. The staffer, angry with this, quits Con B. They also tweet a few times about how it's the reason they left Con B.
And now people are tweeting and emailing my con about the whole thing.
...also a part of me is a little disappointed that no one's reached out to us to try and get ME kicked. Like the absolute shit I've been talking online for decades about other cons when they do something I don't like makes it look like what this person said was a COMPLIMENT. 😆
In my opinion, you reprimand con staff when they do something that endangers others, makes the con less safe, or has legal ramifications for the event. Saying they don't like panel moderation does not pass the minimum requirements here, y'all.
This feels like people with a personal vendetta trying to find an excuse.
And I'm not here for it. Like I don't necessarily agree with our staffer's opinion on moderated panels... but I care about it as much as I do their opinion of hot dogs. I literally cannot be deeply offended by their preference on the topic. Touch some fucking grass, y'all.
