Taken in 1877, this brave Civil War veteran and free man, Lewis Martin (1840 - 1892) was in an unmarked grave for 121 years until a community effort was made to mark his grave with a tombstone on November 2, 2013.   Lewis was born an enslaved person in Arkansas, escaped slavery, and then moved to Springfield Illinois where he enlisted in a black regiment in the Civil War. A few months later, in the Battle of the Crater, he lost his right arm and left leg.   After the war, he wasn’t able to work because he couldn’t read or write and was unable to perform manual labor. Lewis lived his life in pain due to his injuries, and leveraged alcohol to dull his senses. Resting in an unmarked grave for over 110 years, Lewis will always be remembered on AncientFaces.

I’m sorry friends, but “just google it” is no longer viable advice. What are we even telling people to do anymore, go try to google useful info and the first three pages are just ads for products that might be the exact opposite of what the person is trying to find but The Algorithm thinks the words are related enough? And if it’s not ads it’s just sponsored websites filled with listicles, just pages and pages of “TOP FIFTEEN [thing you googled] IMAGINED AS DISNEY PRINCESSES” like… what are we even doing anymore, google? I can no longer use you as shorthand for people doing real and actual helpful research on their own.

Time to drop some links again.

https://searchmysite.net/ Search engine for the indie web, personal websites, digital gardens. You can also find them in websites like Neocities, Indieweb, Blogarama, and write.as. There is also a big list of personal websites.

https://search.marginalia.nu/ Search engine that focuses on non-commercial content, and promotes websites that aren’t usually at the top of the list.

https://www.worldcat.org/ Search engine for items in libraries (books, but also maps, articles, sound recordings, theses, etc.)

https://scholar.google.com/ Search engine for scientific papers, reviews, etc. It’s still google, but a lot better than the normal search engine counterpart.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_search_engines A list of search engines sorted by subject, area, and more. If you’re searching on a specific area, it might be worth checking if there is one focused on that area.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_academic_databases_and_search_engines A list of academic databases and search engines.

https://tineye.com/ Reverse image search alternative to Google’s. Also, P.S.: Please stop using Google, and start using more privacy focused search engines, like DuckDuckGo or SearchX (opensource; personally haven’t used it yet, but it looks promising for privacy-focused users)

That Google and Meta can get away with this during an era of intense misinformation and disinformation signals that we cannot rely on large tech companies to provide reliable access to information and news:

Listen my basic human empathy does feel genuine horror for those people who most likely died in that submarine.

But my working logical brain is also scoffing at anyone stupid enough to spend 250k to get into a heavy metal coffin, sinking to see the ocean floor graveyard that is the titanic.

Like just watch the movie, man. Spend 250k to go to Venice or some shit.

Why the titanic? We all know what it looks like. We all saw the movie.

"People don't deserve to die in such horrifying ways" and "You voluntarily got into a jerry rigged unregulated submersible to go to an incredible hostile place you shouldn't be going to anyway what were you expecting" are statements that can coexist

idk who needs to hear this rn but suffering is not noble. take the tylenol

One time when I was younger I was refusing to take headache medicine and my mom said “the person who invented that medicine is probably so sad you won’t let them help you” and now every time I find myself denying medicine I just imagine the saddest scientist making those big wet eyes like “why won’t you let me help” and whoop then I take the medicine

Dear Neil,

Do you think the WGA strike will have a negative impact on the success of Good Omens 2 because it could impact its promotion, therefore the amplitude of its viewership and consequently the approval of a third season? I know that there are more factors to the success of a show than its promotion but it did raise an interesting question that I would like to ask you. How do you stay true to your fight and beliefs as a writer when you join a strike like the WGA's but also guarantee that your work is sort of successful?

I hope you're doing well and that your fight for the respect, recognition and fairness that you and all writers deserve is a victorious one. Stay #WGAStrong!!!

Absolutely, it will have a negative effect on the promotion and success of Good Omens, just as it will have a negative effect on Anansi Boys (which has just gone to "picture lock" on all six episodes without me signing off on the edits) and on Sandman (which will be shooting without anyone rewriting the scripts, which were frozen as of May 31st). But it's worth it.

I'm seeing a lot of people say that punk fashion is expensive and inaccessible, which is very wrong. here is a list of some ways you can make punk fashion easier, cheaper and more accessible for you, since that's... kinda the whole point.

others are encouraged to add onto this!! (just don't recommend corporations like amazon. not cool.)

1. patches!! you don't need to buy them. DIY patches are not ugly or boring. in fact, they are encouraged here!! DIY, in my opinion, is always the best thing to do when it is an option and is safe to do so.

2. speaking of DIY, spikes!! you can make them!!

cut the top and bottom off of an empty can. cut down the middle of the cylinder and flatten it, so it's just a flat rectangle of metal.

cut out a shape that is kind of a third of a circle, but around 3/4 of the curved edge is taken up by triangle shapes. (I'm not very good at describing, so here's a badly drawn picture)

Image

roll it into a cone, leaving the 4 triangles sticking out at the bottom. this bit is optional, but you can fill it with hot glue to make it more sturdy, just be careful touching the hot metal. I tend to hold the cone by one of the triangles with a bit of fabric wrapped around my fingers for this bit. cut 4 small holes in your fabric in this kind of shape:

Image

and put the spiky bits of triangle through the holes. fold the triangles in on themselves to secure the spike in place. boom. spike obtained. this is one I made and attached to a little piece of fabric to test this method out:

3. battle vests!! (like the base jackets). the best places to buy these are charity shops and second hand websites in my opinion, but if anyone else knows any better options, please reblog with those!!

a good trick I find works well on eBay is to filter search results to your country (or state? can you do that in the US? idk) so that a: fast delivery because local, and b: all the sellers of everything that shows up are in YOUR TIME ZONE.

why is this important? when people sell something for really cheap, it goes FAST. check eBay at like, 2am or something. all the scalpers in your area are asleep. grab the cheap stuff while they can't.

4. sewing!! want patches, but can't sew for whatever reason? I've heard of a lot of people with joint conditions like arthritis complain about the inaccessibility of patch stuff, and that does sound extremely annoying, however:

safety pins!! while they are still a little fiddly, they're much less work so you don't have to fiddle about for long. if you can, you could even ask a friend to help, since it doesn't take long at all I'm sure someone will be willing to help out!! (I know I would, but that's just me, and I love this kind of thing). safety pins on clothes are also widely considered to be a symbol of solidarity, so if anything, you're adding some extra love and meaning to your patch pants/battle jacket.

if that's still too fiddly, fabric glue is always an option. unfortunately this means you won't be able to remove/reposition patches, at least without leaving a massive patch of residue, but if you're ok with that then fabric glue is probably your best bet.

for people who prefer sewing: as for where to get the thread, I've heard a lot of people recommending dental floss, as it's apparently much cheaper and works just as well. I haven't tried this myself so can't confirm that, but I thought I'd share it regardless.

5. where to get fabric!! old clothes. rip em up. you don't need any kind of fancy fabric from the craft store. my patches are made of old jeans that I grew out of.

don't have any old clothes and you don't want to waste any good ones? I'm not sure about other countries, but in the UK, as long as you're not on private property (trespassing), dumpster diving is perfectly legal.

I definitely ;) do NOT encourage ;) trespassing rich people's land ;) to steal from their dumpsters ;)

or tbh it doesn't matter too much how rich the person is, since it's all going to landfill anyway. if it's in the bin, it's free game, but you didn't hear that from me. ;)

please add onto this where you can!! and if I missed something or got anything wrong, add that on too!!

i’ve seen a lot of young kids/baby punks recently complaining about how expensive dressing alt is. especially in the past week, with across the spiderverse coming out. and listen.

listen.

no it’s not. get a pair of boots from a thrift store and rip up/ make patches from your old clothes and paint shit. cut and dye your own hair. fucking steal. if someone told you you have to buy $200 docs from amazon to be punk you’re allowed to kill them

You can also get fabric for super cheap from thrift stores that are religiously affiliated. Dunno why but I've never had much luck at a Goodwill looking for fabric. 10/10 would recommend a store associated with the MCC (Mennonite Central Committee), their stuff is super cheap and they usually seem to have a good section dedicated to just fabrics, threads, crafts, etc.

Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.

Might I add:

The defeat of the wizard who made people choose how they’d be to be executed

The woman who raised the changeling alongside her biological child

The human who died of radiation poisoning after repairing the spaceship

The adventures of a space roomba

Cinderella finding Araura (and falling in love)

I don’t know a snappy description but the my nemesis cynthia story certainly lives in my head

I am in love with you /p

What about the one with the princess locked in a tower learning to become a wizard? That’s lived in my mind for years and I haven’t seen it in a long time

is there a way to bookmark posts?

tag as #bookmark?

thx!

this whole oceangate submarine fiasco has actually led to a lot of interesting talks and debates about the grey area of human empathy vs the inclination to recoil at the bizarre behaviors of the ultra wealthy and how people struggle with both ideas and is actually very interesting to watch play out in different types of people

avoiding eviction, 2023 edition

good morning. i am very tired. remember last year when our landlord decided to try and evict us with no legal standing and it turned into a months-long fight even after we paid him $1500 (thanks to the generosity of you guys and others in the community, which i can't even put into words how grateful we are for)? yeah, well. gestures vaguely. he's doing it again <3

this time, this bastard in all his disgustingly greedy glory wants $2600 by the end of june. being blunt, there's not much we can do to pull that out of our asses without some serious detriment to other financial corners, like bills, doctor trips and medicine. so, here i am again, asking for whatever help you may be able to give, even if it's as simple as spreading the word.

donations of any amount can ask for as many stickers and prints as their hearts desire (just note that they may be late in going out, as i'm almost out of stamps). donations over $30 can get a colored sketch commission; over $70 can get a flat colored comm. i'm even willing to do tattoo design commissions (donation amount depending on complexity).

here's the kofi goal, as well as my shop. maybe one day we'll finally stop getting hit over and over with crisis events. i can only hope

i wish i had something more to say than, just. please help us. and thank you. please remember that you're loved, and you're worth it, and you're welcome here. i hope you have better days than we currently are
