Another Neglected Blog

@facets-and-rainbows / facets-and-rainbows.tumblr.com

It's like a multifandom blog. Only one of the fandoms is the Japanese language itself, and I like writing crossover fics about it. Or something.

WAS ANYBODY GONNA TELL ME THAT NEZUKO FROM KIMETSU NO YAIBA

IS VOICED BY SOMEONE NAMED

鬼頭 明里

OR WAS I JUST SUPPOSED TO READ THE CREDITS MYSELF

like. like. Family name Kitou, spelled Demonhead? Given name Akari meaning light or brightness??

Did she just walk in and introduce herself and they immediately went YOU'RE HIRED? Like was that her audition?

[English Subs] Ao no Exorcist - Shimane Illuminati-hen 2017

Another project that took me ages lol

Okay, so it’s been a pleasure working on the subs for this stage. So far, this is the stage that I’ve enjoyed working on the most. All the actors were wonderful, and I keep fangirling over Ryo and Shuuhei-san and Ryugi and Yuta so many times without ever getting sick of it and often so much that I never got any work done lol

Anyway, this is such a wonderful stage. Definitely enjoy it!

So, I tried my best in translating this play, and to be honest there were quite a few lines I wasn’t sure myself. This is the first time I’ve encountered so much trouble in translating a play, so I’m superrrrrrr nervous about this. Anyhow, if you identify any faults in my translation, please please please tell me so that I can update the file and make the changes for everyone else. Thank you so much!!

Thank you @mgene89 for letting me use your file and @nick5x10 for helping us with the translation! I would never be able to do this without you!

You guys can get the raw from here! (don’t forget to be kind to lovely @mgene89 for sharing it!)

Please do not re-upload, do the hardsubs without permission or claim as your own!!

Now without further ado, you guys can get the subs here!

Enjoy!

Who's 39 and why is he thanking them?

Oh, I know this, actually!

3 is pronounced "san" in Japanese and 9 is pronounced "kyuu"

39=sankyuu=thank you

So it says Thank You twice. Not that this answers why he's wearing a thank you shirt, but it is kind of a cute shirt.

Hey, I saw your Yugioh post about the Bakura orthography situation (which is very interesting) and I was wondering, got any insight into why Mokuba seems to spell his name in katakana? Is there a reason, is it just a style thing, is he trying to avoid writing 馬 twice? I’ve been curious for ages and never found a satisfactory answer

No idea, I'm afraid! I searched around in Japanese and found a good number of native speakers asking the same question, though, so we're not alone. General consensus in those discussions was ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯ with a little bit of "maybe because 海馬木馬 would be the dumbest looking name I've ever seen" so I think your guess is as good as any.

Meanwhile Honda is the same way. 本田ヒロト. Even though that's a bog standard normal name with plenty of normal ways to write it in kanji. Heck if I know why.

大草原不可避 : Keyboard smashing in Japanese

I explained how keyboard smashing in English expresses laughing really hard and she taught me the Japanese equivalent in return!!

As some of you might know, in Japanese, “w”  from the word “to laugh” 笑う 「わらう」 is basically like “lol” in Japanese so when there’s a bunch of “w”’s together it looks like this wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

and it looks like a bunch of grass so one slang word to show something is funny is 草 「くさ」 which is the word/kanji for grass so you don’t have to type out a bunch of w’s.

So the step up from is 大草原 「だいそうげん」 which means prairie since there’s a lot more grass.

And if something leaves you laughing so much that you can’t hold it back you could say 大草原不可避 「だいそうげんふかひ」 which basically means “inevitable prairie”.

The “inevitable part”, 不可避 「ふかひ」 in this phrase means laughter is inevitable and you can’t help but laugh.

By far the least realistic part of this story about tabletop RPGs is the fact the players apparently named their characters after themselves. Except for Jonouchi, who apparently chose his dub name. I wonder if that was deliberate on the part of the translator or just a weird coincidence? I’d love to know if the names are different in the original Japanese.

If the translator did deliberately change Jonouchi’s character’s name to match the dub, I think they should have gone further and had Yugi’s character be named Yoog.

They're very nearly the same in Japanese, actually!

  • ヒロト (Hiroto)
  • アンズ (Anzu)
  • ジョー (Jou)
  • ユウギ (Yuugi)

The only notable things are that Jounouchi shortened his and they all wrote them phonetically (in katakana) instead of the usual characters (kanji) that have both meanings and pronunciations.

If I had to guess, and I could be way off, it might be meant to sound like they've entered their names into a video game rpg. If it was the 90s your naming screen would only have phonetic characters (ain't nobody coding all that kanji input) and if you only got, say, five letters, Jonouchi's wouldn't fit.

Still doesn't explain why he didn't go with Katsuya though, lol. Maybe he likes the name Joe.

This is what I sound like talking about my current hyperfixation to people

I'm being so brave about seeing this with no context and wondering how it fits in with both these people being Japanese speakers, given that Japanese is NOT one of the languages where a starfish is a "star," they're called ヒトデ which means "person's hand" because the five points are kind of like fingers and-

I know MORE THAN ONE JAPANESE WORD for “the illegitimate child of a man of high status and a woman of low status” and it is ALL RIN OKUMURA’S FAULT look

  • 落胤(らくいん/rakuin)[落 “drop” plus 胤 “descendant”]
  • 落とし子(おとしご/otoshigo)[落とす “drop” plus 子 “child”]

I think 落胤 is more fancy because it’s all kanji and they use it in title screens and stuff.

But I LOVE THESE WORDS because they literally mean “dropped child” and I get this fantastic mental image of Satan just patting down all his pockets like DAMMIT I COULD HAVE SWORN I HAD ANOTHER BABY AROUND HERE SOMEWHERE MAYBE I SHOULD CHECK UNDER THE COUCH

You know what’s bothered me forever? The fact that every translation I’ve ever seen of the title of Blue Exorcist 19 is something along the lines of “uneventful day” or whatever.

Which, of course, is what なんでもない日 (“a day that isn’t anything”) means.

Seems fitting enough for the cute filler episode where they try to throw Izumo a surprise birthday party but end up just having a combined birthday party for everyone, and Rin makes a Christmas cake because his birthday is so close to Christmas he doesn’t know the difference, and Yukio mopes for a while about not knowing if his birthday is actually his birthday and Shiemi cheers him up.

BUT YOU KNOW WHAT I’VE READ ENOUGH PANDORA HEARTS TO KNOW WHEN SOMEONE IS MAKING AN ALICE IN WONDERLAND REFERENCE IN JAPANESE

This episode is called Unbirthday.
