Ansel Adams (1902-1984) - Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico

Gelatin silver print. Taken in Nov 1941, printed c.1943.

12.25 x 16 inches, 31.1 x 40.7 cm. Estimate: US$500,000-700,000.

Sold Sotheby’s, New York, 17 Feb 2022 for US$504,000 incl B.P.

Perhaps his most famous image, this print hung in Adams’s dining room until he gifted it to his son in 1971 and remained with him until it was acquired by the current vendor in 2006. The sky is darker in later prints.
