things i wish somebody had told me when i was younger re:health and body
- dandruff and dry scalp are two different things. dry scalp is when your scalp lacks moisture and flakes just like any other part of your skin, but dandruff is a specific fungal problem. dry scalp produces white flakes, dandruff produces yellowish flakes. they require completely different methods to cope with them, which explains why that dandruff shampoo you’ve been using isn’t making your dry scalp get better but actually making it worse. dandruff shampoo strips the hair of the oils causing build up, and once used regularly should rid of the fungal problem. a scalp with dandruff needs less oil, a dry scalp needs more. if your scalp is dry and flakey it needs oil masks, less washes, gentler shampoos and more moisturizing conditioners, and you need to drink more water and might benefit from a humidifier in your room. if you treat them as the same problem you will continue having the same issues.
- when working out you can target specific parts of your body to gain muscle mass, but you can’t target specific parts of your body for weight loss. our bodies just don’t work like that and any workout put out by a magazine that says “this specific set of moves will cut the fat from your belly/arms/lovehandles/etc” is flat out lying to you. you can gain muscle mass by doing moves that target those specific muscles but you can’t make your gut smaller by only doing crunches. weight loss and gain is fundamentally tied to energy input and output, not the amount of squats you do. if you expend more energy than you take in, you lose weight. if you take in more energy than you expend, you gain weight. you can lose and gain weight in healthy and unhealthy ways, and you can’t force specific parts of your body to lose or gain weight. whatever changes you wish to make regarding your body must be done with the goal of improving your quality of life, and your quality of life is impacted by many things. everything you do with your whole body impacts your whole body, and lifestyle changes impact your whole body.
- a lot of the ingredients in that $2 drugstore face mask and $4 apricot scrub do more harm than good. stay away from exfoliants with beads, salts, and sugars if you’re going to be putting them on your face and stick to chemical exfoliants. a warm damp washcloth used gently is your best friend. the skin of your face is tender and easily irritated. you don’t need nearly the amount of products ads tell you are necessary for healthy skin. a simple face oil/serum, cream/lotion, and gentle cleanser will be more than enough for most people.
- do some research on the oils and base ingredients that are good for your skin type. i have very dry, eczema prone skin and a simple face serum with a couple of non-comodogenic oils, vitamin e and collagen has done more for my skin than anything else i’ve used in my 21yrs. seriously. you don’t need that $70 estee lauder miracle oil with 40 ingredients to have healthy skin. and this gets parroted a lot but stay hydrated. you can use all the products you want but if you’re dehydrated your skin (and the rest of you!!) is still going to starve.
- shaving vs not shaving has no effect on your hygiene, what matters is that you regularly clean your body with soap and water and let it dry completely. hair is not inherently gross, no matter where it is. in many cases it exists to protect your insides from external, dangerous bacteria. whether u shave your face or legs or wherever else is not tied to your health and wellness. anyone who told u that you must keep your ass cheeks bald as an infant’s to be hygienic lied to you and they suck. (they’re also probably racist.)
- there are thin people who are unhealthy. there are fat people who are healthy. shocking! if you eat okay, walk a bit, drink ur water and get your vitamins you are probably fine. there is no immediate danger. you are not a bad person nor are you going to drop dead if you can’t afford to go to the gym 4 times a week, or ever. the idea that you must be able to eat fresh food all the time and pay for a gym membership and use it almost every day and be hypervigilant with your weight or else you will die from a stroke at the age of 30 is blatantly false and deeply classist. there are many ways to be healthy, and you know your body better than anyone else does. take care of it in any way you can. it’s your house and your lifelong friend. we’re all trying our best to survive. as long as you feel well and there aren’t any problems with your blood work you have nothing to worry about.
radfems/transmisogynists don’t fucking touch this post
