A Run of Bad Luck

@evilroachindustrial / evilroachindustrial.tumblr.com

Pacific Northwest. Nerd to the extreme. Video Games, comics, movies, writing, strong opinions. It's a little bit of everything.

i will never care about the met gala beacuse i know in my heart if you gave a drag queen 45$ and three days they could make something completely out of this world that out every single celeb to shame

i can answer this! the met gala is the main source of funding for the metropolitan museum’s costume institute, which houses something like 30k pieces of surviving historical clothing, shoes, accessories, etc. dating all the way back to the 15th century. the costume institute is the only department of the met that has to fund itself; ticket sales and donations are the institute’s only other sources of funding. the met gala brings in millions of dollars to the institute

i know it seems like just a bunch of rich people flaunting their wealth, but it’s actually what’s paying for the upkeep of all of these pieces of fashion history and keeping them available for public view, instead of in private collections. plus we get to laugh at rich people who don’t know how themes work

Here's the bit from orpheus in the underworld I think op is referring to since I don't think the title is well known. It me laugh just reflexively now. If the time doesn't get saved in the link it starts around 6:50

Also would like to put shostakovich waltz no. 2 forth as another contender

Exactly!

Mountain king is good for something like "post about tea that starts relatively normal but descends into chaos as ppl admit things like putting the mug of water directly on their stovetop to heat it".

Orpheus is for anything summarizing, say, the likes of the SPN finale and the world news that was happening at the same time, and the various memes developed about it all.

THIS SONG IS CALLED ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD?

it's apparently a parody opera lmao, very much a lampoon of the myth 🤣

We as a fandom talk a lot about the Prime Deities lately, and for all the god shop talk, we haven't given a whole lot of attention to the Betrayer Gods. So, here's a poll for funsies. Remember, that this is about these gods as depicted in Exandrian lore specifically.

No 'show results' option because you gotta commit to having a favorite awful child.

It is SO wild when people in this fandom are like "Pelor better watch out before people really start thinking he's the bad guy, the sun can scorch as much as it can grow" as if that's a new take and not, like, an accurate summary of ancient sun worship in real life history.

A smelly man and a weird little girl claimed that they could show me how to get rich quick by turning all of my copper into silver, and conned me out of my coin!

Tumblr’s Core Product Strategy

Here at Tumblr, we’ve been working hard on reorganizing how we work in a bid to gain more users. A larger user base means a more sustainable company, and means we get to stick around and do this thing with you all a bit longer. What follows is the strategy we're using to accomplish the goal of user growth. The @labs group has published a bit already, but this is bigger. We’re publishing it publicly for the first time, in an effort to work more transparently with all of you in the Tumblr community. This strategy provides guidance amid limited resources, allowing our teams to focus on specific key areas to ensure Tumblr’s future.

The Diagnosis

In order for Tumblr to grow, we need to fix the core experience that makes Tumblr a useful place for users. The underlying problem is that Tumblr is not easy to use. Historically, we have expected users to curate their feeds and lean into curating their experience. But this expectation introduces friction to the user experience and only serves a small portion of our audience.

Tumblr’s competitive advantage lies in its unique content and vibrant communities. As the forerunner of internet culture, Tumblr encompasses a wide range of interests, such as entertainment, art, gaming, fandom, fashion, and music. People come to Tumblr to immerse themselves in this culture, making it essential for us to ensure a seamless connection between people and content.

To guarantee Tumblr’s continued success, we’ve got to prioritize fostering that seamless connection between people and content. This involves attracting and retaining new users and creators, nurturing their growth, and encouraging frequent engagement with the platform.

Our Guiding Principles

To enhance Tumblr’s usability, we must address these core guiding principles.

  1. Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.
  2. Provide high-quality content with every app launch.
  3. Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.
  4. Retain and grow our creator base.
  5. Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.
  6. Improve the platform’s performance, stability, and quality.

Below is a deep dive into each of these principles.

Hi folks! We're surprised to see how many of you think we're getting rid of the reverse-chronological dashboard or pivoting to a solely algorithmic feed. We're not! We can see how you might have come to that conclusion, so let us reassure you and clear some things up.

We have a ton of options and toggles to customize your experience. Want a reverse-chronological dashboard feed? No problem! The chronological feed is not going anywhere. Just toggle off "Best Stuff First" in your dashboard settings and scroll away. Want to see more art or fanfic of your favorite movie or show? Follow some tags and you'll find additional posts and new blogs to follow. We've had an algorithm for years—we just don't make you use it if you don't want to.

Tumblr is a place where you can tailor and customize your experience to individual preferences. With this core product strategy as guidance, we'll keep improving Tumblr for new and existing users alike.

BTW... PSA.... even if we arent mutuals if youre in my notes regularly theres a Very high chance i am still fond of you. yes im vaguing someones tags on the compliment the person u rbed this from post. but like. positive vaguing? THE POINT IS im weird abt following ppl but IM STILL SENDING U FOND VIBES...

that is so cute actually

This Google Drive AI scraping bullshit actually makes me want to cry. My entire life is packed into Google Drive. All of my writing over the years, all of my academic documents, everything.

I’m just so overwhelmed with all the shit I’m going to have to move. I’m lucky to have Scrivener, but online data storage has been super important as I’ve had so many shitty computers, and the only reason I haven’t lost work is because Google Drive has been my backup storage unit.

My partner has recommended gitlab to move my files to - it seems useful, and I can try and explain more about what it is and how it works when I get more familiar with it. I’m unsure if it’s a text editor, or can work that way. He was explaining something about the version history that I don’t quite understand right now but might later. I’m just super overwhelmed and frustrated that this is the dystopia we live in right now.

I’m so sad to see so many panicked posts about google docs when the original inflammatory post has been debunked and retracted.

Google is ONLY talking about publicly available data. Stuff that is in your drive DOES NOT COUNT as publicly available.

There are SO MANY companies that use drive and docs for proprietary information who would have MANY lawsuits to bring if it was discovered private drives were being scraped.

Now, I’m not saying NOT to swap writing programs because google docs is pretty pants as an actual word processor, and also, never ever have all your stuff only in one place, but I don’t want anyone to freak out that their writing isn’t safe.

I think I dislike ‘fuck canon fanon rulez’ takes because time after time I see how boring and predictable fanon is and how often it reinforces racism and misogyny etc. in ways canon never did

and I think having to work around canon and with canon to make something new usually ends up pushing people to make something weirder and cooler

pertinent to the question I just got about deities I think the whole disagreement within the fandom about the gods, once you strip away all of people's personal baggage, comes down to "do you treat the gods as no better than people? or do you treat them as no worse?"

In other words: Are the gods all-powerful when you need something from them and beneath your contempt when you don't? Or are they fallible when you ask for things, but still entities deserving of existence even in failure?

How would you respond if someone asked you point blank to justify why they should save you? How would you respond if someone asked this while someone else swore to kill your sister for not saving them?

if someones undercharging for commissions dont tell them they could charge more just tip them.. some times we put prices so low so we can draw in a bigger crowd esp if we need money.. if you are happy with your results even an extra 10 or 20% can help a lot and also makes us feel rly good about our art ^_^

I do genuinely like that Pelor is difficult, alienating, intensely flawed, narrow-sighted, and very hard to like. It does force those characters interested in the question of whether the gods are worth saving to actually GRAPPLE with the question on other merits (like what his relationship to his followers is like, the things he allows them do to for better and for worse, what his priorities are, etc., all valid negative points against him) instead of making the decision on a basis of raw likeability as if judging personality contest.

And, if one does still consider it maybe worth saving the pantheon, then additionally having to reconcile with the fact of being likeable or dislikeable or anywhere in between doesn't have an effect on whether they have the right to continue existing.

The idea I'm referring here is that the question of whether the gods should continue to exist is often decided on a basis of personality alone, whether it be Pelor and the Raven Queen are hard to like or Melora and Sarenrae are really likeable. That's existed since before Uthodurn, before Hearthdell, and it's felt hollow even then.

It's interesting to see Deanna especially directly confront these shortcomings and difficult and unlikeable things about Pelor, even directly highlight them in moments between herself and him, and then seemingly not give that dislikeability alone (just the way he can be unlikeable and has a difficult personality) significant weight in against the philosophical questions here, rather preferring to weigh those aforementioned other merits. The conflict of personality between them has great weight for the future of their own relationship (not great), but less toward an answer on the future of him and the pantheon as a whole against Predathos (still working on saving them from Predathos, even when covering her holy symbols). It's happened while in Wildemount, and it's again here in Jrusar.

Whatever one's feelings are on the question, I do really like that one of the major gods at play here doesn't make the question easy to answer using charisma and likeability—because that isn't the point. Trying to answer the question within this narrative on raw basis of whether a god has a right to exist or should be destroyed while centering whether they're likeable or not likeable is incredibly reductive, just as it is pointless and hollow to make the same assessment of individual mortal people. Their personalities alone aren't worth consideration at all; there's more important things to weigh for anyone grappling with that question.

adhd is so funny it's like being possessed but with myself

me, desperately: can we please get something done?!

my inner demon, who is also me: IF YOU LIKE PIÑA COLADA

"This could've been an email" but with people who leave fourteen part replies in the notes instead of just reblogging the fucking post and typing it out.
