i hate when ppl act like the only reason to not like a "sad" ending is because you can't take it or whatever. personally as a tragedy enjoyer, i hate a poorly written ending. i hate an ending that is just kind of a bummer. i hate an ending that feels mean-spirited to the audience. i hate an ending that's redundant. i love a sad ending that is thematically consistent, poignant, and bespoke to the rest of its narrative.
Nostalgia made me watch the One Piece live action - And i loved the ships so much it made me want to draw my own spin on them - inspired by both anime and film, but also by antique portolan charts !
Okay, first of all: it is not at all surprising that tumblr is into this beef. at least half of being in fandom is beefing constantly, and the levels of haterdom that Kendrick Lamar has achieved are...... truly impressive and a little bit scary.
this is gonna be messy and not comprehensive but i've been thinking about this for like a week and there's just so much....... context. there's layers to this shit.

Alright, I think I like tumblr now.
A pun post crossed my dash, and I reblogged it with an equally bad pun in return. A couple of my followers find it funny, it's a good day for everyone.
That was on July 7th.
Virality on Reddit was entirely algorithmic. You could garner a couple crossposts, but the success of a post was entirely dependent on whether or not it hit r/all--the main page of Reddit. If your post does that, it's immediately exposed to 10x the number of people and immediately gets upvoted.
On my pun post, I get a couple reblogs. And those reblogs get a couple reblogs--nobody really adds any content to the post, it just gets a couple reblogs here and there.
There's a specific chain of reblogs that I'd like to focus on. The most popular post on this chain has about 25 reblogs on it. Half the posts have three reblogs or fewer. Five posts in this chain have just one reblog total.
But the reblog chain keeps going. And going. It breaches containment many times over. And finally, after a chain THIRTY SIX posts long, at 9:30 AM, July 22nd this morning, it hits a popular account.
99% percent of the people who have seen the post--virtually unchanged from how it left my dash--have seen it because it was curated by 36 different people. That's insane to me.
None of those 36 people know that they're part of this chain. They saw a post, reblogged it, and moved on. If any one of these people had not reblogged, the post would have a fraction of the impact it has.
And yet, after two weeks, the post has effectively hit the main page of tumblr. It was picked up, only because people liked it enough to show it to their followers. There were no algorithms necessary.
You really, truly, cannot get this on any other website.

Encampments are working; demands are being heard. Evergreen State College has become the first American university to devote itself to complete divestment from Israel. Specifically, a signed agreement between the university and the Evergreen Gaza Solidarity Encampment tasks the college with the formation of an Investment Policy Disappearing Task Force, which will “address divestment from companies that profit from gross human rights violations and/or the occupation of Palestinian territories”. The task force will include both students and faculty, with divestment based on the task force’s decisions set to be completed by spring of 2026. (It’s important to note for transparency’s sake that the agreement signed is not without criticism from other pro-Palestinian activists, as it “does not contain any specific, concrete commitment to divest”.)
Something else that makes this significant is that Evergreen State College was the college of Rachel Corrie, an American peace activist who was crushed to death by the Israeli military under an armored bulldozer while protecting a Palestinian family’s home from demolition. (IDF soldiers later made “Rachel Corrie pancakes” mocking and celebrating her death, and promising to use donations inspired by the post to “buy more bulldozers”.)
