How NOT to clean up mercury.

At us in secondary school they teach that mercury could be disposed by simply adding some sulfur powder and from these two mercury(II)-sulfide will form (S +Hg —> HgS), what could be cleaned up easily and since it has a near 0 solubility, it is not highly toxic.

Well, this is true in an 50%. On the above gifs I added some mercury (15-20 g from broken thermometers) and added some sulfur. These two were grinded/mixed for half an hour but most of the sulfur and the mercury did not react. If I would have a mercury spill in the lab only small amounts of the spilled mercury could be “neutralized” with sulfur, most of it should be collected manually.

However these days mercury thermometers are nor sold since everything what has mercury in it is banned. But sometimes small mercury spills till happen. Here you can know more about how should be elemental mercury cleaned up: http://www.epa.gov/mercury/spills/

Resolution of a compound by forming salt with an optically pure chiral acid.

The compound what I started from is orange and when it’s protonated by an acid it turns deep red (as seen on the picture). The interesting is, that according to the experimental results only one of the stereoisomers react with the acid, the other is sterically hindered, so the other enantiomer of the acid would be need to form the salt.

The marbles at the bottom of the flask are molecular sieves, they absorb any water what is present, and they prevent my compound from decomposition, since it’s sensitive to water.

Map from Resident Evil (PS1) drawn from memory. Hopefully posted before Halloween.
Seriously, I love this game to bits.

I am so in love with this, yo.  I’ve mentioned my RE love here before, I’m sure, and I identify pretty strongly with a lot of the more emphatic notes here.

As for “before Halloween”, uh, yeah.  For realsies this time, I’m gonna get the stragglers out of the queue.  Sorry about that.
