An Essay Of Thoughts

@essayofthoughts / essayofthoughts.tumblr.com

Call me Aich or Essay. I don't care what pronouns you use for me. I avoid stan and anti culture in equal measure and if you want to discuss something then please don't come aiming to argue. I track the #essayofthoughts tag

CritRole Fic WIPs & Ideas

Listed in rough order of how much I have written/planned out for each.

Current Projects (AKA, these have a lot written already):

  • Ghost Cass - Percy’s not the only member of his family to escape the Briarwoods. He’s just the only one to do so alive. NOW POSTING
  • Soulmate AU - Percy and Vex both know what it’s like to have a bond broken against their will.
  • Evilest AU - Percy doesn’t come away quite so intact from his second encounter with Doctor Anna Ripley.

Side Projects (AKA, I’ve written parts of these already):

  • Delia AU - After the attack, the thing Percy wants most is his family restored to him. It doesn’t happen how he thinks. NOW POSTING
  • Happier Evilest AU - See Evilest AU, above. Now with a tad less angst.
  • No Briarwoods (Yet) AU - Whitestone has been without a head of the Grey Hunt. Vex applies to try.
  • Sylas Briarwood Gets To Live, Bitches - Pike has Divine Intervention. What if Sylas was made truly alive and Vecna had no hold on the Briarwoods anymore. What if they had to live and experience consequences?
  • Perc’ahlia Twilight AU - I read Midnight Sun. I realised Percy is what Meyer thinks Edward is. Also, Vex isn’t a doormat.
  • Fem!Percy AU - Waking up on a fishing boat, surrounded by strangers, in torn, soaked clothes after two weeks of torture hits different as a girl. Will be Lesbians.
  • Masc!Vex AU - Similarly to the above, Vex’s flirting comes across very differently with a male character. Also Percy has to directly process the fact that he is bi as all hell.
  • Magnus Archives AU - What if Percy as an Archivist?
  • Murder on the Exandrian Express - Murder on the Orient Express but in Exandria and with a dose of crack.
  • Perc’ahlia Beauty and the Beast - Vex and Vax kill Saundor but Saundor gets off one last curse before he dies. Vex is a tree-creature, just like him, until she gains a heart freely given.
  • Wolf Siblings AU - Six Swan Brothers but it’s Wolf Siblings. The de Rolo siblings are cursed to be wolves and Percy travels Exandria with the pack that are his siblings.
  • Tiefling!Percy AU - Based on @blorbologist‘s idea; this has already gotten out of control and may well be more than a oneshot at this stage. Or even several oneshots.
  • Modern Perc’ahlia Fake Dating AU - Do I have worldbuilding and backstory for this set up too? Maybe.
  • Kash Backstory Fic - I read Werewolf’s fantastic meta on him and oops I have a problem. (Boy was raised in a cult! He was fifteen!)
  • Kash & Zahra fic - See above. How they meet, how their relationship progresses from debt to friendship to family to love.
  • Zahra Backstory Fic - LOOK. Maybe I just have a Problem. And two new blorbos, that too.

Oneshots to finish. One day:

  • Perc’ahlia Kidfic for @cosmonauthill - I will write it! I promise! A series of snapshots of the early days with baby Vesper.
  • Rock Band AU for Nell for @nanyoky - I will also write this! I promise! Modern Rock Band AU, mostly fluff, some trauma.
  • Year Break Perc’ahlia Breakup Fic - I will write it damnit. I have most of it down! I just need the connective tissue! DONE
  • Perc’ahlia Noir AU - Vex would make a hell of a femme fatale, that’s all I’m sayin’.
  • Emon is Burning - Introspection after the Conclave’s attack on Emon.
  • Desmond-Cass Fic - Canon-compliant fic where I poke at the similar trauma these two have and why they might each have reason to distrust/dislike Percy and also it may end up very very slowburn.
  • PercyVex Stargazing AU - Tal’Dorei guide lists Exandrian days of the week. Days of the week usually reference gods or moons/stars/planets. None of the Exandrian gods match, not even elvish ones. Don’t match the moon names either. Ergo: planets or stars. Percy speaks Elvish, Vex grew up in Syngorn. Go.
  • Elaina Lives AU - One of my first ideas when watching CR was an AU where Elaina lives as a Raven Queen cleric and is present at Marrowglade. Have fun!
  • Canon Vampercy AU - I’ve read too many Vampire!Percy AUs. Kinda wanna do my own take on it.
  • Werewolf’s Soulmate AU Continuation 3 - AU based on @exhaustedwerewolf‘s excellent soulmate AU. It has maybe got a little out of hand.

Ideas? (AKA, I’ve got an idea. And maybe two lines?):

  • Modern Uni AU - Oh so much trauma in there. Ripley as an evil professor. Percy and Keyleth as roommates and childhood friends. Vex and Vax as the hot neighbours down the hall. Scanlan is That theatre kid. Grog there on sports scholarship; Pike there doing medicine. Go.
  • Eros & Psyche Perc’ahlia - The OG Beauty and the Beast. Trapped in shadows and darkness, Percy is slowly pulled into the light by Vex's persistence.
  • Daemon AU - Adelheid leaves him sometime between his two weeks in Ripley’s care and when he comes back to himself, gun in hand. He knows trauma can Separate a person from their Daemon. He still never thought Adelheid would leave him.
  • AU PercyRipley Briarwoods Escape - Percy’s at the Lyceum or Westhall Academy in Westruun to study when he realises he’s had no letters from his family in weeks. He returns home worried - and then he isn’t allowed to leave.
  • VERY AU PercyRipley Fic - I had an idea writing Delia AU. It goes Very AU, involves less-awful Briarwoods and I’ll write this only if I have time.
  • Delia AU Spinoff: Cabin in the Woods - Percy is aware enough to plan his own escape...
  • Delia AU Spinoff: What If More Kids AU - A commenter suggested this. My brain went Brrrr.

Kinda want to write... maybe? (AKA, a concept. idk):

  • PercyRipley Soulmate AU - Soulmates as the love of your life? Done before. Soulmates as people who have an impact on you? TASTY. Percy and Ripley have a bond. That doesn’t stop Ripley from testing it, torturing him, or tearing the bond apart. Percy knew he’d likely not be a good or attentive partner in a bond. It still hurts that even Ripley rejected him.
  • Hogwarts AU - This would take a fuckload of worldbuilding and might as well just be a whole ass other magic AU but whatever, that was the original idea and that’s what I’m running with. May never get to this one.
  • Post-That Balance May Return Smuts - Look, the negotiation of sex when there’s trauma involved and all is fun. The matter of consent, of keeping an eye on each other to know that things are okay. The fact that Percy has so many terrible habits when it comes to self-care. TASTY is all I’m sayin’.
  • Piercings Percy AU for @agarthanguide - Hannah sent me an idea a while back. One day I will write this. Maybe. Probably? I hope I do.
  • PercyRipley Hatesex - Figuring out how I could make this work is a challenge given... everything. But the challenge is half of the fun.
  • Sonnie’s Edge AU - Look. Look. Vex as Sonnie. That’s all I’m saying. Vex. As. Sonnie.
  • Witcher AU - I just have Thoughts, okay.
  • Syldor Isn’t A Dick AU - Look. It’d be interesting - just because Syldor isn’t a dick doesn’t mean Syngorn is better. I think it could be interesting!

What fandoms would be okay/acceptable to ask you questions about on your blog? Just for future reference I want to be sure I’m not stepping over any bounds when I send an ask for a fandom that may or may not be a good memory for you. Aside from C1 of CR, recently I’ve seen an ask about Star Wars, some marvel stuff, Johannes Cabal, Crimson peak…. Those are all good to go yeah?

General rough list of fandoms I can vs will talk about:

  • Can talk about Harry Potter (extensively) but generally prefer not to because I have messy feelings about it due to, you know, JKTERF. Don't give a shit about Fantastic Beasts, let alone the new game.
  • Can talk about Johannes Cabal but I've not reread the books in a bit so *shrug emoji*
  • Can talk about Imperial Radch (recently reread the main trilogy, waiting till I have money again to buy the new book) but most of what I have to say about it is "Hey, you should read this".
  • Can talk about Star Wars but honestly if you want good Star Wars thoughts you should just go ask @tobermoriansass or @chamerionwrites, imo.
  • Will talk about Crimson Peak, I love that film a lot and have many feelings about it (have many feelings about most things del Toro has worked on; he knows so well what he's doing and it's just so engaging to watch. Will also talk about Shape of Water, Nightmare Alley and his Hellboy films).
  • Can talk about the MCU but also I have cut myself off from Marvel at a general infuriated tendency towards how shit the film writing is, the general homogenous sludge it produces, the shit takes of the Tony stans and the general waste of interesting characters. Will still talk about the Maximoff twins and Vision because I Love Them. Have not watched anything from after AIW because that's the one that made me fully quit the fandom.
  • Will talk about C1 of CR because The Blorbos, They Are Strong In This One. (Notable blorbos: Percy, Vex, Kash, Zahra, Cass, Desmond. Bastard Blorbo: Ripley. Asks about any welcome.)
  • Generally, if I've written a fic in the fandom (viewable on AO3) you can ask about it. The fewer fics I've written about it then odds are, the less I have to say.

For the most part, you can ask me about any of these but HP, because I've got a messy grieving process going on there. That said, unless it's marked as a Will talk about fandom, don't expect the kind of essays you can get for the Will talk about fandoms.

You can ask about the "Hogwarts" CR AU, but remember that I'm using Hogwarts as a shorthand for "magic school with some ideas cribbed from HP, some general magic school ideas, and a lot of independent worldbuilding", and not to expect much that's actually that recognisable as canon HP.

Hope that helps!

About your tiefling!percy au:

I just realised that him wanting to hide the tail provides a good explaination for his choice of that long sweeping coat of his, and i wanted to share.

do you have any lore and/or angst waiting to be shared?

Avatar

The coat is just due to propriety and etiquette and proper dress - but the fact it enables him to better hide his tail does not go amiss. Not unlike gloves - it's one of those things where old expectations help him hide the parts of himself he doesn't like. In canon, all this proper dress enables him to hide his torture scars - here it allows him to hide that and some of his tiefling aspects.

Usually, Percy's tail is kept coiled around his waist or leg, or otherwise tucked out of the way and obscured by his coat. It's usually only out when he's so emotional he doesn't have the focus to hide it, or when he actually needs it for balance.

I certainly do have other angst and lore snips for this AU, but I am presently focussing on other WIPs (Ghost Cass, Delia AU, a set of Kash & Zahra fics) so I'm hesitant to share more until I get Tiefling AU more firmly hammered out.

Hi @mushrooms-and-antlers - given this is a shared AU between Essay and I, I can offer a few snippets of my own. Should this AU be written in its entirety it'll likely be Essay's work, but I love all the angst and hotness of this AU dearly and can't resist <3

Cat’s Cradle, Chapter 15

Ch1Ch14

Two more months.

Percy just has to survive two more months. Then the kittens will have homes and he can make a swift exit with what’s left of his heart. Or maybe even sooner: Vax’ildan and Keyleth will not be gone forever. And the kittens only need a few more weeks of care until Curio and Vex can handle themselves without him.

Finding excuses to stay is almost trivial, is the trouble. Namely Vex’s long hours - he’s not sure she’d remember to eat if not for Trinket whining at her heels. There’s some matzo ball soup from Pike waiting to be warmed on the stove once the animals - good gods, a dog and a cat and six kittens - are cared for.

She only just got home, not even taking the time to shuck her jacket before finding him, preparing a bottle of her own and coaxing one of the kittens to feed.

(The turquoise dress and dark leather jacket is criminally good looking. Wow, legs.)

“There’s a good darling,” she murmurs, eyes a starlit darkness as Spanner latches and drinks obnoxiously loudly. Ratchet, by comparison, is quieter, pawing at the air in front of her with tiny talons.

Vex leans heavily into Percy’s side, the last rags of her perfume settling with the benign scents of a busy day. He has no idea how she can go from that to caring for something small, helpless - he would certainly need to sequester himself away from anything alive for an hour or three.

Have you ever answered an ask about why Percy decided to stab Seeker Asum? Like, was he completely aware that it was Raishan in the first place or was it a fluke? That was some risky business. Sorry, I can’t remember if I ever saw it on your blog or somewhere else. Or maybe I’m just imagining things.

I've never tackled it before but we all know why he stabbed "Seeker Assum"? It comes up both on stream and in Talks Machina - Percy knew exactly what he was doing and did it entirely on purpose.

He did it because not that long before it'd been revealed that "Assum" was actually Raishan in disguise (the real Assum had never reached Whitestone but rather was still away investigating as he'd said he would the last they saw him), Percy was relatively newly back to life (and Ripley was dead so he's feeling extra great) and so he was kind of riding the high of that and so being way more reckless than usual, and I imagine he figured if it was the real Assum after all, then Pike could heal him and if it was Raishan - as it was - he could use the attack to force things out into the open and prevent their from being secrets between anyone on the war council. Secrets like that can often be leveraged to cause distrust, paranoia and enable one like Raishan to gain power or even just escape.

Percy grew up in a ruling noble family; he knows these kinds of games. He may not have had Raishan's hundreds of years to get good at it, but while he's reckless and arrogant and at times a dick, he's also not actually that stupid. Allowing Raishan to keep holding all the cards and dictate her help and how much others knew was dangerous. They know she's amoral at best - she decimated the Fire Ashari in order to get Thordak out of the Fire Plane, in doing so destroying Emon (both the populace and the place) purely for sake of a possible cure for her illness.

She is selfish and self-serving, manipulative and power-hungry and these are all established facts about her. Even if she wasn't an ancient green dragon, Percy has plenty of reason to distrust her and not want her to have any power over them - especially in his own home, where he and his family had been attacked and massacred before! Of course he'd want to prevent that from happening again and so forcing the truth into the open would help with that.

Percy canonically has panic attacks each time he deals with Raishan 1:1 - she's someone who's powerful, dangerous, manipulative, and has insinuated her way into his newly regained home, full of people he's trying to see protected. Leaving her with any power over him and the rest of VM in turn gives her power over the people of Whitestone - and he fought the Briarwoods and helped gain Whitestone it's freedom. Percy's a lot of things - he wasn't fighting the Briarwoods solely to free Whitestone, after all - but he does have a massively overgrown sense of responsibility. He helped free Whitestone. Ergo, Whitestone is his responsibility. Ergo, he cannot let a giant ancient green dragon have any more power over it than absolutely necessary.

Coupled to everything else, and his new elation at being alive having faced Ripley - yeah, he was a bit more reckless. But he knew exactly, 100% what he was doing.

He was taking a risk to force the truth into the open.

#iirc this was also . the episode right after he kissed vex. he was riding a real fuckin high when this happened lmao#i love this moment so much truly it is one of the percy moments of all time#cr#cr1 (via @aq2003 )

It was yes! Though I would consider his actions here to be more riding the high of resurrection, because his kissing Vex was also in good part due to that and what he heard of the resurrection offerings as well. It all comes back to Ripley being dead and him being alive. If we’re counting the Vex kiss as an influence here we could also count Vorugals death - two dragons down - and I personally think it’s a bit more overarching than that.

Though, certainly, Percy is prone to chaining “things going well” into adrenaline or emotional highs than last until something goes Badly Wrong.

im not sure if you’re still part of the johannes cabal fandom but i was hoping you could bless me with some details. ive been interested in reading the books for a while now; however im not the biggest fan of too much romance in the books i read. I I’ve seen some ppl shipping the cabal with a character named leonie and i was wondering if anything happens or is implied between the two? ive heard that she’s supposed to be like his dead lover so i was just curious. i also don’t mind spoilers btw

I'd hardly say I'm "part of the fandom" - I read the books, enjoyed them, and moved on. Occasionally I go back and reread them, but I've never felt any urge to seek out fanfiction of the series.

But no, nothing in the books as I read them suggests anything more than friendship between Johannes and Leonie, and they disagree on quite a bit. Zarenyia is far more flirtatious with him but nothing happens there either - one, she's a succubine spider demon and it's just part of their dynamic and two, Johannes is pretty single minded in his focus.

Why would Johannes Cabal and Percival de Rolo hate each other? Is it because they’re fairly similar?

You need to understand, when I first read Johannes Cabal I was yelling to @chamerionwrites every few chapters with some new snippet that just felt so fundamentally Percy.

They're both arrogant, self-assured young men with a hefty bundle of issues and deep emotional repression, a tendency to see themselves as tools for their purposes and a liking for Guns. I would describe Cabal as Percy if he lost Vex and pulled a Delilah in trying to get her back - hells, Cabal is a necromancer!

So yes, in short, they're so alike they'd rub each other completely the wrong way and it'd be absolutely hilarious to observe from the outside I'm sure, but ... yeah. They wouldn't get along.

Order up!

  • You know, we don't exactly know from where in Wildemount Sylas, Delilah and Ripley are from - or if they're even Wildemount natives at all and didn't just migrate there independently as adults for the ethically dubious work opportunities. None have a Zemnian accent, so I doubt any of the three are from that cultural group. The Truskan Vale (area of origin of Beau and Tary) and Marrow Valley (where Veth is from + where the M9 formed and had their first adventures) seem likely culprits. The reason I'm underlining this is because Caleb, Astrid and Eadwulf, all Zemnian, are single children (which is unusual), while Beau, Tary and Veth have siblings. So if any of these nasties are from Wildemount, and not hiding a Zemnian accent, they likely have (or had) siblings back at home. Can you imagine Percy on a vacation and running into someone with Ripley's eyes or Delilah's smile? Likelyhood is low given they'd likely be rural, but! You never know. (AU where Ripley is Caleb's aunt worth anything?)
  • I don't think we as a fandom poke at the parallels between Tary and Beau enough! Especially given they both grew up in the same neck of the woods, and with parents of high social standing and relatively new money. What I mean is: Beau absolutely heard about Tary growing up. She 100% heard of this unworthy son turned adventurer and hero and author and friend to many, and maybe she wondered if an unworthy daughter could do the same. I doubt Thoreau would have bought any of the Darrington books, but Beau could have either stolen some copies or read them once she was taken by the Soul. I think they'd get along, in a weird way no one expects that puts off everyone initially. (He reminds her a bit of Caleb and Jester, she'd remind him of Percy)
  • I think Percy might have a smidge of bias against Wildemount people in positions of authority. As I've pointed out above: Ripley and Delilah (and Sylas) were from Wildemount as far as he knows, and Tary's father was certainly an asshole too. Dwendal refused to send forces to help face Vecna. If he hears about Caleb and Beau's respective trials against their abusers? Oh, oh that would not go well. I can see him being a smidge wary of high-status Dwendalian folk he's dealing with for diplomatic reasons. Good thing Vex is more involved in politics than he is - and she can be perfectly shrewd and petty in her own right <3 I hope Whitestone withdrawing much trade after news of Trent and Zenoth's abuses came to light put pressure on Rexxentrum and the crown to handle this shit. (And I'm sure Ludinus' whole deal is helping a lot)

Which version (i.e the comics, cartoon, original campaign art, other fanart, etc.) of Percy and Vex do you typically visualize when you write your stories? Is that version of them your favorite?

Avatar

This is probably gonna sound kind of arrogant but for the most part, none of them? Like, certain things have influences on how I tend to envision the characters but I'm not a terribly visual thinker or writer; if you look at my fics you'll note I tend to dwell much more in emotion and tactile senses than I do visual. It's kind of why I envy people like my dear friend @cosmonauthill or the excellent @exhaustedwerewolf - both have this fantastic knack for creating a single striking visual that helps you build out a scene or a character in your mind from that.

Like. At the end of the day there's only one art piece that I tend to really look to as a visual guide for any of the characters and that would be This Fantastic Piece of Percy and Orthax from the lovely @agarthanguide, and that's more to do with the artistic style of the piece (which. I just love) and the fact Hannah is a dear friend who's art I've enjoyed for a long time, meaning I'm biased towards her art anyway.

As it is, I don't particularly care for the animated series - I find the designs too simplified to the point that they're boring to me, and I'm someone who likes the animated shows I watch to have a clear style; to me the animated series looks altogether too much like many other shows.

The comics are fine, I guess, but they don't really stick out much to me, and I have nitpicks about a few things in the fanart of others - namely that a lot of people draw half-elves' ears like they're full elves. If they're half elves, then elven ears would be like those of the World of "we have an ear fetish" Warcraft elves and I find those kinds of ears just to just... beggar belief. I need a bit of verisimilitude and the ear size/prominence is a nitpick for me.

I certainly take cues from some art. I used a mixture of the comics art and the group picture done by AnenomeTea to judge the height differences of Vox Machina, which, yes, I did sit down and do, I'm like that, and I love @crithaus' golden freckles idea for Vex, I like the sheer ludicrousness of Vex's hair in @alienfirst's art, and I like how long and awkward Percy's face is in the comics, but I also like the art of @2impostors which always makes him look like his nose has been broken at least once (a headcanon I share) and I also like just how young he looks in the original stream portraits with that round face. It really brings home that he was only a teen when he went through so much. That's another reason I really like alienfirst's art as well, because they similarly give Percy a rounded, young looking face - though I personally tend more towards how Hannah - agarthanguide - draws Percy's hair than anyone else.

And that's before we get to specific AUs of mine - Percy's differently weathered and worn in Delia AU and Ripley's Assistant because he wasn't physically tortured; in Ghost Cass he's much better rested and doesn't look so sleepless, and of course for Tiefling AU, I lean very much towards the lovely art @blorbologist did.

So... yeah. What visuals I do have are very much a mishmash of personal opinion and specific AU, and while I might take cues from this and that it doesn't really create a single coherent image so much as a few specific details I can then write in for people to apply to their own image of Percy. Hope this answers your question!
