trying very hard not to have an intolerable divine comedy moment the likes of which i have not experienced since high school. and failing of course. anyway his version of 'i've been to a marvellous party' is so interesting because the first time you listen it's just a little too obvious/broad of a joke but around the last 30sec of the track something clicked in my head and now i'm compelled to listen to it on repeat for hours on end. i really like this live version from the 1998 noel coward gala because of 1) the visibly displeased audience members 2) how nervous neil seems during the improvised patter and 3) there's both a guy in a full tux and a guy in 90s streetwear behind him so it kind of looks like he's being accompanied by the pet shop boys
