So you may have noticed we've redecorated here ...

I swear I like things that aren't Interview with the Vampire. Someday you might see them here again. So with my browser theme and icon updated, here's an introduction:

I'm esin and I've been here since 2013. I write things and post them on Archive of Our Own. I have an about page, a navigation page, and a sideblog for crafts @thread-deco-string-nouveau

I'm happy to talk and answer questions about anything and everything. I've been here a while and would love to help new users find their niche here.

Apparently I also make fanvids now -- check out my youtube to see them!

If you're here for the fandom and not the live blogging of my reconstruction of queer sexuality post-evangelicalism, I tag my musings as #personal and religion stuff with #christianity. If you are here for the latter, I tag fandom stuff with the name of the fandom (i.e. #iwtv #grishaverse or #yuri on ice -- see navigation for more). I also tag #disability for related posts. Please blacklist as brings you the most joy

Blog title comes from Annie Lennox's song "Love Song for a Vampire" and other quotes are from AMC's IWTV.

Welcome friends!

With the hbomberguy plagiarism video on fire right now I want to share my favorite example of egregious plagiarism.

I’m a marine biologist. Currently getting my PhD. I’ve done a lot of scholarly writing. Many classes I took as an undergraduate had big writing components. I took limnology at one point as an elective. This course had one such big writing assignment.

The professor told us a story. He said he once got a student paper that absolutely blew him away. It was way beyond what he’d expected from the class. This was before we had online tools to check for plagiarism. The paper impressed him so much that he brought it home to show it to his wife. She began reading it and then set it down, looked at him, and said, “Dan, you wrote this.”

This student was dumb enough to not only copy a published paper verbatim, but to copy a paper published by the professor of the class.

AND HE NEARLY GOT AWAY WITH IT.

My professor is a linguist and she has the similar story! But she recognised her paper on instant and decided to mock her student a little bit

She just said "I don't believe that you've wrote it". And her student began to defend herself, trying to prove that no, she did in fact wrote it

And after a couple of minutes, my professor finally said "Sweetheart, you've got out of luck. You've copied my paper".

We don’t talk enough about how fanfiction writers love to give character large amounts of non-specific paperwork they hate doing

say more pls

Yeah sure why not.

So most stories take place when Events are Happening, and this means that no matter what kind of job the characters have, they’re probably not too focused on them. Fanfics, on the other hand, often show the down time. Which means that the writer has to figure out what the hell these characters do in their jobs. Unless the characters have a job the author understands or knows well, the author is often at a loss for what to have the character doing.

So they sit them at a desk and give them paperwork. What is the paperwork for? Rarely specified. It is Paper Work for the characters Important Adult Job they have and they need to read or sign it or something. And there’s always a line about how Character Hates Paperwork. Doesn’t matter if Character is a Mafia Boss or a General or a Diplomat, here they are in an office trying to get out of Doing Paperwork.

There’s also a sense of, like, humor and mundanity that comes with it. Like the examples above, it always particularly stands out to me when a dangerous individual is griping about some paper they need to sign or something. The less you can picture Character doing paperwork, all the better to force it upon them. If Character is saddled with Paperwork, they’re usually now concerned about the physical damages their motley crew causes, because damage = More Paperwork.

Anyway I just think it’s fun or funny, Sephiroth doing paper work and Sawada Tsunayoshi doing paper work and this just in, Tony Stark is doing paperwork. Sorry, Phoenix Wright can’t play right now. Yeah, it’s paperwork.

Honestly as an adult in an office job I would find less paperwork not very believable

Anonymous asked:

because i really have no concept of what gender you are or aren't, when i think about your blog i sometimes preconsciously think, "what gender is heresylog?" and then have the immediate preconscious response of, "heresylog is catholic," and i have done this enough over the last year or so that when i hear other people say that they are catholic, part of me reflexively thinks, "oh i see, they're catholic, that's their gender, like heresylog"

New gender just dropped

said it once i’ll say it again torchwood as a show is genuinely so fucking funny to me bc in dr who it was such a big Thing this giant secretive organization that caused a catastrophic mess and then you cut to the show and its just a tiny team of 5 horny bisexuals who have to stop making out for long enough to save the world and i think that is beautiful. that was the only correct way they could have used jack as a character

Broadchurch is so wild. The 10th Doctor and the Queen of England are investigating the murder of the 13th Doctor's son. Fleabag is defending the Queen's husband who also murdered the 13th Doctor's son. Anthony Bridgerton is a reporting on everything. Everyone thinks Argus Filch is a pedo. Gwen Cooper is in pseudo witness protection. The 10th Doctor wants to put Jarvis in jail. Also, Rory Williams is a priest.

Jack Harkness being an explicitly queer character from the beginning, being played by an out gay man and then GETTING HIS OWN SPINOFF WHERE HE GETS TO BE EVEN MORE QUEER in freaking 2005/2006 is WILD to me and some people would be like “this shows we’re going backwards” and I agree to an extent but it also gives me hope in a weird way
