since it’s getting an anime adaptation i’ll write a dungeon meshi rec real quick
dungeon meshi is a fantasy + food manga by ryoko kui following a group of adventurers who delve into a dungeon to save the sister of one of the characters after a dragon fight gone wrong. left without money and supplies, they continue on by subsisting on monster cuisine. it’s a fun premise that becomes deeper and more intricate as the plot progresses
the characters are great. every single one of them feels well-developed, they’re all interesting in their own ways, and their interactions with each other make for heartwarming and hilarious moments. i got super invested in them. the character design is fantastic; every character (major and minor) is distinct in design and personality.
the details about monsters becoming food comes together in a way that not only makes the food enticing, but makes the monsters biologically intriguing. the ways that kui turns iconic monsters into something you can actually imagine eating is impressive. repeatedly i’ve thought “this just makes sense” and it’s so satisfying (no pun intended). a lot of details exist in the manga, separate adventurer’s guide, and on [ kui’s blog ] that show you how much work was put into the worldbuilding & characters.
i rly enjoy the comedy. the way character dynamics play out, assorted visual gags, funny expressions, and general absurdity keep the overall tone a good fun time. it’s balanced out both by serious moments and the action you’d expect in a dungeon where the adventurers need to fight monsters.
i’m also a big fan of the art! it’s beautifully detailed for the characters , monsters, and environments. the delivery of everything whether it’s serious, ominous, action, comedic, or whatever else is so dynamic and a treat to look at
tl;dr: dunmeshi is a great manga so check it out or check out the upcoming anime adaptation by trigger! (there’s a 30s CM for it by trigger you can [ check out here ] if u want to see coloured pictures moving Now)
