Tumblr,

As you’re probably aware, the coronavirus disease, or COVID-19, has now been found in countries all over the globe. This is an understandably disconcerting moment for many, but there are steps we can all take to help mitigate the effect on our communities.

COVID-19 is spreading, but misinformation and disinformation are spreading even faster. The most responsible thing you can do is protect yourself from both the disease and false information. Being prepared with facts and data instead of assumptions and fabrications will help inform how you can best prepare for COVID-19.

Here are some resources you can trust:

  • WHO provides daily updates surrounding COVID-19’s spread, infection rate, and general influence on our society. Their latest update given on March 3, 2020, details that there is a shortage of personal protective equipment for healthcare professionals. They also provide a very handy FAQ section, where you can learn more about how to protect yourself and your community.
  • Every day Worldometer updates its website with the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in each country that has been affected. Worldometer has been rated one of the best free reference websites by the American Library Association, and for good reason: it lists every single one of its regular sources here, and lists the source of every COVID-19 update at the bottom of the COVID-19 page.
  • Your local health department will often have the most up-to-date information specific to your immediate area, including how to proceed if you believe you may be showing symptoms of the virus. If you live in the United States, you can find the contact information for your health department by visiting the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO).

There’s another thing about this news that a lot of places are not talking about: the toll on one’s mental health, especially if you are someone who struggles with anxiety. If you find your concerns about being prepared are crossing a line that affects your mental health, please consider reaching out to a loved one who can guide you to help, a mental health professional, or an organization set up to help those in need.

Here are a couple of organizations you can trust:

  • Crisis Text Line is free, 24/7 support. Just text 741741 from anywhere in the United States. The Crisis Text Line will connect you with a trained Crisis Counselor.
  • National Alliance on Mental Illness (@namiorg) offers free support and resources for those who are struggling. NAMI can be reached Monday through Friday, 10 am - 6 pm EST at 1-800-950-NAMI (6264) or by email at info@nami.org.

Take care of yourselves, Tumblr. Wash your hands well, practice keeping a safe distance from others, only wear a mask if you believe you are sick with COVID-19 symptoms and could infect others (or are immunocompromised yourself), and remember to fact check everything that you see. Head on over to @world-wide-what for a refresher on what fake news looks like and how it spreads. Pass those tips onto others when you see them accidentally spreading false information.

budgeting - a guide for someone transitioning into adulthood.

1. Use a spreadsheet and mark in committed weekly expenses, food, transport, gym memberships etc. calculate how much you are DEFINITELY going to spend then add a $20-50 leeway over depending on different circumstances, eg. you’re going to breakfast with a friend.

2. You want to have a set amount you want to be putting away into savings each week, eg. for me I set aside $50-70 each week into savings and I take this into account as a fixed amount of at least $50 I’m not going to be able to spend from my pay checks.

3. From this amount see how many hours you have to work each week to be able to sustain and how many to be able to save more. Whatever I earn each week where I earn more money to what I’m spending I put into savings.

4. Treat savings as something you don’t touch. Savings are incredibly important, do. not. touch. your. savings. You want your savings to be able to generate interest, the more you save, the more monthly interest. Your savings are there to catch you if everything goes wrong.

5. Have seperate accounts for savings, spendings and then you can also have another savings if you are saving towards something in particular eg. currently I’m saving to buy a car, I’m not going to take this money out of my savings so each week I take another $50 out of my pay-check to save for a car.

6. When going out with friends, find fun activities to do that don’t involve spending money eg. I’ve gone on walks around the lake with friends, bike rides, picnics, library study dates. Just because you’re saving, doesn’t mean you have to cut out socialising.

7. Don’t work yourself to death, saving one step at a time is enough, you’re still young and you’ve got time to figure it out! Just save in areas that you can and know that every dollar you put away counts, even $20 into savings each week makes a difference. During term time I really save by cycling everywhere, cutting back where I can because I know I can’t work as much and then during the holidays I get as much work as I can, dividing how much I earn between saving accounts and spending for the upcoming term time.

Binder vs Notebook

Binder Advantages:

  • you will always have all your notes in 1 place
  • you don’t have restrictions, you can always add more sheets of paper
  • you’re flexible with your structure, you can always change the place of your notes or add a new section
  • you can take out only the lessons that you need
  • good for left handed and right handed people
  • strong cover
  • you can always decorate it later without worrying that you have to leave blank pages to fill in later
  • perfect to be customized, the cover can reflect your style
  • you can choose the type of paper you want to use

Disadvantages:

  • if your binder doesn’t have at least 3 rings, your notes might rip off after a while
  • takes a lot of space
  • heavy if you plan to have the entire binder with you

Notebook Advantages:

  • takes little space
  • not heavy
  • many options for the style of the cover (you can customize the cover if you buy one with a plain cover)
  • you can always carry it around
  • you have many size options
  • you can always move the files to a binder later.
  • you know you always have everything with you
  • cheap

Disadvantages:

  • not the best for left handed people unless you look for a certain brand
  • you can’t add paper to most of them
  • you always need to buy new ones and they can take quite a lot of space
  • hard to structure the lessons on them if you don’t know how much grammar/vocab/culture you’re going to study
  • quite heavy if you buy a big one (80-90 pages) and you write only a bit in it
  • you have to stick to only 1 type of paper

i’m constantly torn between wanting to watch new shows, re-watching old shows and attempting to have a life that doesn’t revolve around shows

Our culture really romanticises the idea of a brooding misunderstood loner who’s an asshole to everyone but secretly has a heart of gold, so it’s frighteningly easy to meet a guy who treats everyone around him badly and believe without evidence that he has a heart of gold.

Don’t fall for it.

And a lapse in cruelty is not evidence of kindness.
