Me: wages should be able to pay for someoneโ€™s home, food, family, and everything else needed to survive in our society

Someone on this site: what about small business owners though?? Why canโ€™t they underpay, abuse and exploit labor?? This isnโ€™t very American of you ://

One of the many stupid feelings humans are capable of having is the private, repulsive rage of seeing someone getting support and sympathy for a problem no one helped you with when you were having it, either because you didnโ€™t have anyone or because it never occurred to you that you could ask for help. Suddenly the world seems to split into two โ€“ the realm that contains people like them, the connected and loved โ€“ and the realm that contains you, the miserable and the alone, who must suffer in solitude. This is sufficiently horrible that you start grasping for reasons to make this reality acceptable, and a mentally available one is that it is superior to be in the miserable solitude realm, that the problem is one that should be solved with self sufficiency and dignity. That this other person is pathetic for being aided and loved when you were not. Scorn is more palatable than confronting the notion that you could have received aid (if you had made different choices or been luckier), that you desperately wish you could have been aided but were not. Scorn is more palatable than the howling hunger for things to have been different for you. So your mind chooses scorn.

It is also a bad place to be. Human existence is full of such traps.

i honestly believe human beings are not meant to live like this. we are meant to live in loving communities and be around nature every day and grow our own food and create art and not work day and night until we die. this longing for another life is not human nature, itโ€™s a symptom of modern society.

the haunted house is an essential setting for feminist horror because the home is a fundamentally unsafe space for women

โ€œAnd since that time I have thought, why is it that women have chosen to sew such flags, and then to lay them on the tops of beds? For they make the bed the most noticeable thing in a room. And then I have thought, itโ€™s for a warning. Because you may think a bed is a peaceful thing, Sir, and to you it may mean rest and comfort and a good nightโ€™s sleep. But it isnโ€™t so for everyone; and there are many dangerous things that may take place in a bed. It is where we are born, and that is our first peril in life; and it is where the women give birth, which is often their last. And it is where the act takes place between men and women [โ€ฆ] and some call it love, and others despair, or else merely an indignity which they must suffer through.โ€

things that made me stop wanting to die that require no effort whatsoever

  • change the color used to highlight text on your laptop
  • move the pictures on your wall
  • stack whatever clutter is in your room into piles even if you donโ€™t have time to clean it all
  • slightly vary your commute, even just by one street
  • change where you sit and scroll aimlessly on your phone even if itโ€™s only to the chair in your room instead of your bed
  • drink water or juice out of a wine glass in the morning because nothing is real
  • shower with the lights off, without music
  • buy $3 flowers at trader joeโ€™sโ€”they look bad next to the more expensive ones but they look so good in your room
  • start typing things you donโ€™t post into your notes. your thoughts can be worth documenting even if you donโ€™t deem them worth sharing
  • wake up super early just once. you donโ€™t have to make it a habit itโ€™s just extra satisfying to go to bed that night
  • listen to the entirety of your favorite album from 2015

nobody ever talks about how selfless it is to choose, over and over again, to not commit suicide. nobody ever acknowledges the tremendous sacrifice suicidal people make every time we choose not to kill ourselves. when a person who is suffering so horribly that death seems like their best option decides not to take their one way out, and to instead remain in hell, day after day, year after year, because they donโ€™t want to hurt the people they love, they are doing something extraordinary. not killing yourself when itโ€™s all you want to do is the purest act of love i can imagine. dying for someone is easy โ€“ you donโ€™t have to deal with any of the consequences, you have your moment of nobility and then itโ€™s all over. but living for someone, when the simple fact of consciousness is literal torture for you? every single suicidal person who ever made a choice to not kill themselves in a moment of misery is a goddamn hero in my eyes. wanting to die and still surviving is an act of titanic courage and self-sacrifice. we deserve more credit for it.

Might have these out of order but just a good thread to share.

on one hand this thread makes me want to cry a lot and on the other Iโ€™m like, well, my brain is a complex system and now I have a sort of entry point to figure out how it works, so thatโ€™s good

itโ€™s worth reading the original thread, itโ€™s been updated.

How doesโ€ฆ One get diagnosed? Or see if they have it.. Iโ€™ve been wondering about me having ADHD or Autism for a long time and this post only strengthens it.

Having sex with someone actually is a big deal and involves a ton of vulnerability and I think itโ€™s extremely troubling and gross and unhealthy and actually exceptionally dangerous that we pretend otherwise and encourage people to โ€œbe matureโ€ by compartmentalizing/completely eliminating their deeper human emotions from their sexuality and that any other view is dismissed as prudish and invalid and unenlightened and childish and restrictive. I canโ€™t think about this too much because it makes me rage but I hate how much porn and capitalism have destroyed how we understand and experience sexuality and intimate connections with one another so much.
