Ramblings of a Cynical Yet Optimistic Artist

@eloquentlyunsophisticated / eloquentlyunsophisticated.tumblr.com

The name is Red. I'm a multi-fandom person, but have my moments of obsession. Don't be afraid to drop me an ask if you wanna talk. I'm open to talking with my followers who wanna talk. I appreciate being told when I may have reblogged from a less than okay source. I use mobile a lot and am a little meh on my due diligence sometimes. I'm 28 so content may not be suitable for all people at all times (Yes, keeping this bit in light of the ban). You have been warned. She/Her pronouns.

Hey, this pride month (or literally any time of year), you wanna know something fairly easy and great you can do?

Contact your local library (or comment on their social media) positively for any pride/LGBTQIA+/queer-related displays or events they have going on.

Seriously.

What I’m seeing and hearing from the (mostly US-based) library workers in my groups and social circles is that the anti-queer (anti-gay, anti-trans, anti-drag queen story time, etc.) comments and complaints that have ramped up in the past year aren’t going away. Even library workers with supportive coworkers/bosses/boards are steeling themselves to deal with an avalanche of garbage, or are second-guessing their displays and events because the amount of vitriol can wear a person down so much. And the ones without supportive people or work environments? It’s worse.

Give the library something else: give them both the ammo (by being one of the numbers they can count worth the positive group) if they need to show their community isn’t wholly negative. Give them the compliment of knowing that their work got appreciated.

  • A comment like “I love this” or “Wow, that looks great!”
  • An email about how much you’re excited about X event
  • A call saying you wanted to let them know you appreciate this thing
  • Tagging them if you share a picture or positive comment on social media
  • “Cool shirt/pins/etc!” (Because people are also bring harassed about personally being queer, even if it’s not a library display)
  • Literally anything that would be positive for them to receive

Love my grandparents.... on the phone just now my papa was dead serious like “i just think it’s so terrible to kick your child out for being gay . This is a union family and the ONLY thing i’d ever kick any of you out for is crossing a picket line.” okay working class hero!

i gotta say i agree that exposing children to algorithmic content feeds is going to make them grow up with one billion new kinds of mental illnesses and it's a serious societal problem that urgently needs addressing but it makes me v. v. v. uneasy when i see posts going around that identify this issue and come to the conclusion 'this is why it's important for parents to know what their kid is doing online' and uh girls there are a lot of kids out there who would be dead if their parents knew what they were doing online

"yeah this aspect of capitalism is extremely alienating and traumatizing" and im nodding and smiling and then they add "which is why we must retreat to the safety of the family" and i start abruptly high-pitched screaming like a fire alarm

Pay heed to Klaudia Amenábar's words! Don't let the executives weaponize fandoms. WGA Strong.

My guys it is starting to work, I've seen some people I know complaining about the writer's strike and turning against them because their favorite shows and/or movie got put on hold. Please do not be fooled like this, this is exactly what the corporations want. It can wait, I promise you will find other things to focus, but writers need this.

If the writers lose, your favorite shows and/or movies will be worse. Guaranteed. The things the studio is pushing for will result in everything being low-quality shit.

THIS IS BIG BIG BIG!  YES!

NO MORE FED USE OF PRIVATE PRISONS!

President Biden signed the executive order January 27, 2021.  This is the first time I’ve even heard of this.  Here are a couple of links with more info:

As we move towards the summer months, this is a healthy reminder that:

  • BMI is misapplied at best and pseudoscience at worst.
  • That genetics have far more affect on body type than any other factor.
  • That a "healthy weight" varies wildly from person to person.
  • That your body's actual healthy weight shouldn't require constant dieting to maintain.
  • That some studies have shown that being slightly "overweight" based on BMI actually makes you more resilient against injury and illness.
  • That unless your weight is actually directly causing you mobility issues or pain, it isn't a problem.
  • That movement and food should be a source of joy, not self discipline and stress.
  • That everyone looks better in clothes that fit properly.
  • That being hydrated and well fed is far more important to your health than you realize.
  • That fed is best.
  • That chiseled abs are only really visible if you are dehydrated.
  • That feeling the sun on your skin and bird song can heal the parts of you that years of dieting and weight watching and self criticism has injured.
  • That you have no obligation to be sexy or beautiful.
  • That you should never say things about your own body that you wouldn't say about a friend's or a partner's.
  • That it is not a moral imperative to be healthy or mobile or skinny.
  • That the people who judge you for your weight are fighting their own demons.
  • That People are absolutely terrible at guessing a person's weight. How you dress and carry yourself has far more impact on perception.
  • That You don't have to be beautiful to enjoy a beautiful day.
  • Better happy than skinny.
  • Feeling good is better than looking good.

tldr I was looking up the classification system for cerebral palsy (GMFCS) and part of the 2nd level is "climbing stairs with the use of a railing" which just about knocked me out. Ableds. . . are you not. . . using railings? it's right there? this is trying to tell me it's abled culture Not to use the railing?

(use your best judgement as to whether or not abledness applies to you here. mostly I mean disabilities that would have some impact on stair-climbing, natch. chronic pain/fatigue counts, but, like, d/Deafness wouldn't, you get me?)

my immediate circle on here skews pretty disabled, I'd love it if it breached containment for a more representative sample

For those who thought Luz should have held onto the power after she defeated Belos, let me offer a passage from The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchet, as young witch Tiffany Aching faces down the Queen of the Elves in a confilict similar to Luz's:

"The secret is not to dream," she whispered. "The secret is to wake up. Waking up is harder. I have woken up and I am real. I know where I come from and where I'm going. You cannot fool me anymore. Or touch me. Or anything that is mine." I'll never be like this again, she thought, as she saw the terror in the Queen's face. I'll never again feel as tall as the sky and as old as the hills and as strong as the sea. I've been given something for a while, and the price of it is that I have to give it back.

And the reward is giving it back, too. No human could live like this.

... One of the biggest differences between Luz and Belos is that she took only what was offered, and returned it to its rightful owner when she no longer needed it.

"some reason" :^)

Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, Fukushima If you can GUARANTEE that nothing even APPROACHING those could EVER happen under ANY circumstances Then I will fold to Nuclear Power

Three Mile Island

NO ONE DIED

Fukushima

NO ONE DIED

Chernobyl

essentially a human-made accident through gross mismanagement and neglect, that physically can't happen with other reactor types (in part because they all have containment buildings now). so yes we can guarantee that nothing even approaching chernobyl will ever happen with modern reactors.

even so chernobyl still killed fewer people than the German Atomausstieg has through increased air pollution because of additional coal being burnt

welcome to team uranium!

Love people using 3 mile island as an example. 3 mile island is an example of where things WORKED, that the failsafes kicked in so only a miniscule amount of radiation was released, which not only didnt kill anyone, but no one was injured, no adverse health effects were caused, and there was no damage to the surrounding environment. Despite the incident, the other reactor continued to run until 2019!

And again: the point isn't "do you prefer renewables or nuclear". The point is "everyone fighting againsy nuclear power has further entrenched coal and oil power and caused a LOT more damage to the environment"

Nuclear disasters are dramatic, scary, and rare.

The deadly harm of fossil fuels is boring and omnipresent. It happens every single day. All day. Everywhere.

"What if my favourite show is delayed due to writers strike?"

With respect, no one cares about your favourite tv shows.

This is about real people fighting for their real livelihoods, for their futures.

I cannot articulate sufficiently how unimportant the production of some tv show or other is.
