i think one of taylor’s best strengths as a songwriter is her ability to portray the smaller moments of love and heartbreak, the smaller moments that hurt the most. all too well isn’t “you hurt me you broke me i hate you because i once loved you”, it’s “i loved you and now i have all these memories and pointless knowledge about you and i no longer have any use for it.” you are in love and lover are two of her most romantic songs because they’re not about the grand gestures, they’re about the day to day stuff that makes a relationship. when she says “i thought i saw you at the bus stop, i didn’t though” in the 1, because you’re always subconsciously thinking about and looking for the people you once loved. or the memories and feelings come again out of nowhere, when you’re having coffee all alone and lord, it takes you away. cardigan is specific details and moments across the span of years, but august is just the same memory over and over, because betty knew james better. back to december opens with “how’s life, tell me how’s your family” because a relationship can end but you still wonder about the people in their life. the dress in clean is wine stained and she can’t wear it anymore, but it’s still in her closet: she still has it. because when you love someone and you lose someone, it’s not a one and done thing. you’ll always have those little things. people plant seeds in the gardens of our hearts and even if we cut them down, the roots still remain, wrapped around us forevermore.

Luke didn’t really consider himself to be an observant person. He noticed roses on shirts and lipstick stains on coffee mugs but while he was walking the street the world was but a blur. That all changed when he first saw you sitting across the way at his recently new favorite coffee shop, Dream Bean. It’s become his favorite place to write because it’s quaint and is never crowded.
He noticed you always ordered the same thing, a grande white mocha with extra whip and a cranberry orange muffin. He noticed you would only come here on Fridays and Saturdays. He noticed you always brought a book with you while you’d sip your coffee, eyes never leaving the page as you took a drink. He noticed how bright your eyes were and how kind your smile was when you’d speak to Bailey the barista.
He also noticed you didn’t have a ring on your finger.
While he wrote in his lyric book, Luke also noticed how his words would form into your features. Your careful fingers as you turned the page, the soft shadows on your cheeks from your eyelashes, and the way you nibbled your lip as you read.
It’s been a whole month of his quiet observations of you and when he noticed he wrote a whole song for you while he was at home, he figured he should do something about it. Instead of being the silent observer, he’ll actively pursue.

MMMKAY– there are two ways you can go about this. The quick and easy way is to make sugar cookies from a sugar cookie mix and just cut open a packet of chai tea and pour it into the batter as you make it. Cause you’re busy and you want making cookies to be a chill part of your day. Pow. Done.

If you want to make the cookies from scratch (that’s what I did for the 1989 Secret Sessions), you can use this recipe I found on a baking blog I like, joythebaker.com and I believe it was originally from a book called The Pastry Queen. If you want another great baking blog, I get a lot of great ideas from smittenkitchen.com too. This is a recipe for basic insanely good sugar cookies. I added the chai element to the recipe because I thought it would infuse cozy holiday vibez into the cookie and it really did. So I’ll star the part that I added in the recipe.
***after you add the egg and vanilla, cut one chai tea packet open and empty the crushed up tea leaves into the batter CAUSE CHAI COOKIES ARE ABOUT TO HAPPEN UP IN HERE***
I made an icing for the cookies, but they’re fine on their own. If you want to make icing for them, just mix 1 cup powdered sugar with ¼ T-spoon of nutmeg, ¼ T-spoon of cinnamon and 3 TAYblespoons <—(I’m so annoying, it astounds me sometimes) of milk or eggnog if you can find it this time of year. The more milk/eggnog you add, the more your icing will become a glaze. But glazes are legit too so basically just LIVE YOUR LIFE.
I lightly sprinkled cinnamon over the icing once the cookies were baked and iced, but there are so many icing options you can pair with these cookies–I mean it’s out of control. If you’re really feeling like living on the edge, you can go ahead and add a few drops of food coloring to the icing to make it festive. No one is going to stop you.
