Tacoma Cop Sued For Throwing Teen To The Ground
When 15-year-old Monique Tillman was riding through the Tacoma Mall parking lot, she was stopped by officer Jared Williams.
Williams, who was off-duty and working mall security at the time, said Tillman was causing a disturbance.
Her lawyer says she has committed no crime and was not under arrest.

Teen Vogue recently featured seven young women of color in an illuminating video on its website about cultural appropriation. Daunnette Reyome, a 17-year-old Omaha model from Atlanta, was the sole Native American who made an appearance. In her brief interview, Reyome pushed back on stereotypes about indigenous people and discussed the spiritual significance of Native American cultural markers, like the eagle feather she wears in her hair.

In 2003, Jaguar Land Rover sold limited-edition versions of its Freelander called Maasai and Maasai Mara. Louis Vuitton’s (MC:FP) 2012 spring-summer men’s collection included scarves and shirts inspired by the Maasai shuka. The shoe company Masai Barefoot Technology (MBT) says on its website that the distinctive curved soles of its sneakers were inspired by “the wonderfully agile Masai [sic] people walking barefoot.” Bedding by Calvin Klein (PVH), shirts and trousers by Ralph Lauren (RL), and cushions by Diane von Furstenberg have all been sold using the tribe’s name. “Most of the value of the Maasai brand is not in the handicrafts the tribe produces,” Layton says. “It’s in the cultural value of an iconic brand.”

When you think about it, cultural appropriation and copyright infringement are very similar–just one is an idea that belongs to a culture and the other is an idea that belongs to a corporation. In either case, it’s a case of “That’s ours, you can’t use it without our permission.” But one is respected (or at least enforced by the law), and the other is not.

If i was American you can bet you bottom dollar I would vote for any presidential candidate who expressed this much compassion and drive to fight for the rights of people who so far have been denied them.
