In the remote Arctic almost 30 years ago, a group of Inuit middle school students and their teacher invented the Western Hemisphere’s first new number system in more than a century. The “Kaktovik numerals,” named after the Alaskan village where they were created, looked utterly different from decimal system numerals and functioned differently, too. But they were uniquely suited for quick, visual arithmetic using the traditional Inuit oral counting system, and they swiftly spread throughout the region. Now, with support from Silicon Valley, they will soon be available on smartphones and computers—creating a bridge for the Kaktovik numerals to cross into the digital realm.
Today’s numerical world is dominated by the Hindu-Arabic decimal system. This system, adopted by almost every society, is what many people think of as “numbers”—values expressed in a written form using the digits 0 through 9. But meaningful alternatives exist, and they are as varied as the cultures they belong to.
this is so cool
Absolutely love it
This is so cool. I’ve never seen a number system other than the standard 123′s and the Roman Numerals, and I love how logical this is! It works so well! I can only imagine how much easier it would be for kids to learn math when the answers are right there in front of you like that.
I hadn’t thought much about how a system that’s not base-10 would work, when it comes to comparing the big numbers, and it threw me that instead of the “10s, 100s, and 1000s” you get “20s, 400s, and 8000s.” So foreign. So cool.
I can tell that this will pop into my head every time I mention in a sci-fi that a fictional culture has a different number system. Now I want to research what else is out there that I’ve never heard about.
I tried to make it as unfunny as I could so transphobes can understand
EDIT: Oh yeah if you don't have the context (bless your heart), Musk decided that "cisgender" would be considered a slur on Twitter
an internal memo leaked from ceo steve huffman saying the "noise" of the blackout will die out and they just need to weather it until we give up. fuck you spez.
first of all it's OVER EIGHT THOUSAND subreddits that went dark.
second of all he clearly doesn't give one single shit about the users or the UNPAID army of mods who slog through a million miles of shit every day to keep illegal and offensive content off the site (i'm a mod in a small fandom subreddit and even the shit i've seen is beyond the pale) and therefore make it appealing to the advertizers.
you have no fucking business without us. and you don't care one single bit about it.
he clearly did not mean for this memo to leak, but someone at reddit thought it was important enough to send it out anyway. please spread it (spreddit?) especially because so much of reddit is still in blackout.
This feels very similar to the uproar they LITERALLY JUST HAD in the D&D community over changes that would have negatively impacted third party creators. People started canceling their subscriptions to the paid service and Wizards of the Coast really thought they could get away with it by issuing a weak apology and waiting it out.
The community got angrier, so WotC thought they could get away with it by backing down to a half measure.
The community got even ANGRIER.
WotC ended up backing down to such an extent that they not only canceled all of the planned changes but released their core material under a creative commons license to boot, putting them BEHIND their starting position.
This is what we should be aiming for. I've used reddit daily for like fifteen years, but sometimes the only thing you can do to save a community you love is to genuinely be willing to walk away until the corporate bigwigs in charge get it through their heads that they actually NEED users. I want to make this the year of companies fucking around and finding out that unhappy users can cause them problems. Starve the bastards out and make them realize they need us more.
I think people need to be more comfortable with illegalism and I’m not kidding. Of course the more legal something is, the safer and easier it is to do, but the more people who disregard the law, the harder it is to enforce. There are plenty of laws on the books that people just ignore and are never or rarely policed.
Becoming more comfortable with little illegal activities makes you more comfortable with bigger more important illegal activities. Additionally, it is crucial to build a wall of silence. Nobody talks everybody walks.
People who give out food without a permit, hold a march without a permit, grow a garden without a permit, are more likely to be people you could turn to to work with on preventing an eviction, or keeping people out of cop hands, or helping your friend Jane get crucial healthcare when it’s not legal in your state.
Communities comfortable with these acts won’t call the cops, and then nobody knows that it’s happening.
People have got to shift from both the idea that lawful = good/ illegal = bad, and that the illegality of something means that’s the end of it, and the only fight left is to make it legal again.
I’m sure this will hit the news soon but just in case it’s not out yet — the Governor of Maryland just signed an executive order tonight declaring Maryland a sanctuary state for trans people seeking gender-affirming care, and for all people who provide such care or help trans people access such care. This executive order includes an explicit refusal to cooperate with law enforcement/prosecutors in any other state where accessing, providing, or helping people access such care is now or will soon be criminalized.
Yes it is absolutely a privilege to be able to travel or to think about moving but if someone can access the resources to move or visit to get what they need to survive and be less likely to be actively targeted for LITERAL EUGENICS AND GENOCIDE, then they should and we should support them.
Please spread the word.
Minnesota is also a sanctuary state, welcome trans people!
Won’t say it again!
cis people can reblog this btw
Hi Neil, so a question that’s a bit out of character for me, but, do you fear death? Cause I do. I am so scared of dying. Like I’m religious and I’m pretty sure I know where I’m going, but like it still scares me to death (pun not intended). I don’t want to die before I’ve finished everything on the earth that I’ve wanted to. I’m scared of what comes in the After. What do you think?
I'm not what anyone else would think of as religious, I have absolutely no idea what happens after you die, I'm pretty sure that I'll leave with things unfinished because that's how things tend to work. But I'm not really scared. When it happens it happens. The world was fine before I got here, and I wasn't upset about not existing yet, it will be fine when I'm gone.
reminder to worldbuilders: don't get caught up in things that aren't important to the story you're writing, like plot and characters! instead, try to focus on what readers actually care about: detailed plate tectonics
@elentaaari this u?
"our son made it through the war to come of age, let's fucken party! rsvp only if you're a little bitch who's NOT coming. all y'all not dead of alcohol poisoning by morning (lmao losers) get dunkt on"
my hot take is that sometimes i see people in their late 20s and early 30s say things that are definitely going to be ridiculous conservative talking points in ten years and if people don't check themselves NOW and become more aware about how they talk about and to other people our world will never escape this cycle of turmoil
sorry reblogging because it is just on my mind but just think about the treatment of teenagers since hateful tiktok comments have been normalized. teenagers are loud, messy, and rambunctious but i truly don't think that means they should be outright banned from stores, movie theaters, and even amusement parks. parents don't have the time to babysit their grown 17 year old child and frankly the kid doesn't want the parent there either. teenagerhood is supposed to be your first dip into independence where you learn how to be an adult... and what they're learning is that they're not wanted and they're banned from establishments that are famously for teens, all because some people got mad that the teens were having some fun that they couldn't have. it's WEIRD.
tumblr mobile has seadily become near unusable these past few updates. not just from a user experience perspective (which is important enough in itself) but also from an accessibility perspective.
examples include the new way the image viewer works (if you can call it "working"), the tumblr live button replacing the profile button, and that newly created blogs will be forced to have their main dashboard tab be the 'for you' page.
to protest against these usability issues, and inspired by the recent reddit blackout, i propose a 48 hour blackout (where you don't use tumblr at all). preferably of both mobile and web (since web has problems too) but mobile is the focus here.
this marks the end of pride month (for the "queerest place on the internet") and the start of disability month (since accessibility is a massive issue here).
tumblr office is in San Francisco, USA, so the times and dates will be calculated using their time zone (PDT).
i can't afford to blaze this post so please spread it around as much as possible! protests only work if significant numbers show up!
(so the blackout would be from June 30th onwards)
@one-time-i-dreamt @i-am-a-fish @lizluvscupcakes tagging some larger blogs to hopefully get the word out more
the baby has one parent's little face marking thing and the other's coat because they're a little horse family the world is a beautiful place
Hey non-Jewish leftists and progressives who consider yourselves allies to Jews or, at a minimum, not antisemitic: now is an exceptionally great time to step up
This is shockingly similar to Henry Ford — i.e. an automotive mogul seen as an innovator in the general public uses his fortune and outsized influence to establish a large media presence and spread antisemitism.
There are some important distinctions, but nothing that makes me feel better about the situation.
1. At its height, Henry Ford’s publication, “The Dearborn Independent,” had a circulation of 900,000. The largest circulation in America at the time was 950,000.
While it was certainly influential, it wasn’t unmatched. In comparison to Musk’s 140 million followers, Ford reached a relatively small number of people.
2. Ford marketed explicit antisemitism, which eventually led to the downfall of his publication — you’ve probably heard of “The international Jew” and “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.”
However, as with most antisemites (on both the right and the left), Musk hides behind the thin veil of dog whistles and oversights, leaving a layer of barely-plausible deniability.
3. Ford was eventually forced to publicly apologize after he made the mistake of attacking Jewish attorney Aaron Sapiro for more than a year, until Sapiro eventually sued Ford for libel (i.e. he fucked around and found out lol). Ford eventually lost the case and was forced to publicly apologize (his apology was written by associates and his signature on it was reportedly forged). The magazine was shut down soon afterwards.
While I can’t predict the future, something tells me Musk’s obfuscations and the current political climate will allow him to continue to operate with impunity. Dancing around the issue allows at the very least for greater longevity of your bigotry (say it with your chest you coward).
Despite everything, Ford was able to secure his position in history, albeit with some, um, unfortunate footnotes and the occasional caveat being mentioned.*
All in all, this feels very similar to Trump copying David Duke’s run for the Louisiana legislature, but that’s a story for a different day.
* some additional footnotes and caveats:
- Hitler quoted Ford in his infamous book
- Ford was a notorious union buster
- Ford received the Grand Cross of the German Eagle in 1938, the highest honor a foreigner could receive from Nazi Germany, with personal congratulations from Hitler
- After issuing the aforementioned “public apology” in 1927, Ford said that he would like restart the publication of “The International Jew.” In 1940. 13 years later.
- It’s just my personal opinion, but we probably shouldn’t honor literal nazis, but whatever
- To this day, no one at my synagogue will buy a ford car. I don’t know if this is the norm in other places, but I imagine that it’s not uncommon.
- Yes, I’m aware that nobody explicitly praises Henry Ford anymore, and everybody knows what a shithole he was. While “Henry Ford hated the Jews” is a common refrain, specific knowledge of his hatred is lacking, and I think it’s important to point to explicit hatred in the past, because hatred is normally hidden nowadays and needs to be identified outside of the group receiving the hatred.
This is an incredibly important addition
no hang on i am truly unwell about the big picture of this
in any context, an all drag queen season is fantastic and i love it
but all art/media exists in socioeconomic and political context. dimension 20 looking at the state of american politics right now and choosing to do this?
incredible.
