the real alena

@eight-pointed-star

mostly silmarillion. i like/follow from @aalenaaa. she/her. twitter is wormcry (but it's mostly in russian)

okay folks important question time

(if you choose the third option please please please tell me in the tags what the rules are and how they affect your pronunciation!)

realising i forgot a secret fourth option: an abhorrent mix of 2+ of these (me) and a secret fifth one: it depends (also me)

lmao this is so random & sorry to snoop on your tags but. just in case it was my video you saw i feel the need to clarify i was jokingly mispronouncing every name as much as i possibly could i do not actually say them this way (to be fair i am not sure i say them correctly). also super interested as to how reading them in russian first would affect your pronounciation. i'd assume it's more phonetic?

KHHHHH I FEEL SO EMBARRASSED RIGHT NOW 💀 i thought that was legit how you pronounced them i died... i mean people pronounce greek names really weird in english. i just. assumed 🥺

okay SO anyway thank you much for asking about how reading silm in russian affects your ability to pronounce these guys correctly. i wanted to ramble about this but felt a bit shy, now i have a reason <3 to rant about my two favourite things (elves and languages)

  • first, this one's rather obvious: before i read the pronunciation guides and the silm in english, i didn't know the difference between th/dh and t/d as there's no θ/ð sounds in russian and both pairs are transcribed as т/д. so, maedros. and terindë. i mean, i still stick to russian pronunciation when talking to people irl but now i know how to pronounce my blörbori correctly in my head
  • second, stress! i think it's a common problem for all languages (unless there are some in which the rules are the same as in elvish languages. i actually looked up finnish pronunciation and, no, it's different) because there are these guidelines on where the stress falls in elvish languages that i haven't seen anywhere else. and, unless you memorise it, you will, likely, place the stress incorrectly. however, this is more sever for russian that english because in english in words of 2-3 syllables the stress is usually on the first one or sometimes the second one while in russian it's the opposite. most people who haven't specifically looked up these rules pronounce it fëanor, silmaril and, i'm so sorry, maedros
  • also, vowel reduction. i'm actually not quite sure how it works in quenya & sindarin BUT probably not same as in russian. (for example: according to the russian pronunciation, the final vowel in maitimo (майтимо) would be ə and the first sound in onóna “twin-born; one of a pair of twins” would be ɐ). i try not to do this but it just sounds unnatural without the reduction :/
  • and there are things that are actually just translators' fault, such as incorrect palatalization of Ls. so, L is supposed to be a little palatalized after e and i but :) some translators either didn't know or didn't care -> we have the incorrect transcriptions in some books (читайте сильм в переводе лихачевой, у нее все нормально!) -> we get things like хелкараксе and альквалонде which are just cursed in ONE sentence (i'm sorry скади you were right about everything except phonetics)
  • omg i almost forgotttt palatalization before e and i 💀 so, as i understand, it doesn't occur in elvish languages BUT it does in russian after е and и. the fun thing is, we do have letters э and ы indicating basically the same sounds but they're pronounced closer to the back of the mouth, meaning there's no palatalization before them. BUT we don't use them for elvish words :) why? BECAUSE they look ugly 💀 as a rule, people are aware that no palatalization is supposed to occur, for example, in beren or beleg but it's hard for me to pronounce in beleg instead of bʲelʲɪk, though for some reason beren doesn't cause the same problem?
  • ah, and, yes, it's reallllly difficult for me to stop myself from devoicing сonsonants
  • and, finally, no long vowels here, sorry

i think that's about it. on the positive side i can roll these rs no problem

I feel compelled to begin a list of Definitive Pan-Finwian Traits.

  • A spinal reflex level conviction that all problems can be solved by biting
  • Good hair
  • The ability to do quiet and serious and solemn work while young creatures of any species (toddlers, puppies, kittens, fledgling birds, juvenile weasels, etc) climb and/or frolic over and around them

You forgot the incredible charisma, all inherited directly from Finwë "Leave everything you know and follow me!" Noldóran

  • Deep-seated conviction that yeah, if it really came down to it, they could and would take a Vala in a fight (note: eagerness to do so varies by individual; what’s constant is the confidence and, even if reluctant, willingness)

A while ago, I saw a post about the story of Beren and Luthien as classical ballet. I had kept the idea in the back of my head as some fun project I could do one day but never found the time to do more than a couple of drafts.

But this is my final year of art school and, for our exam, we have to create a entire project, from characters to environments, so I jumped on the occasion and dusted off my old stuff !

Here you have the very first drafts for Beren and Luthien, I was mostly looking to make functional ballet costumes while given them each their own identity. Beren has a style mixing viking shapes and byzantine empire patterns, while, for Luthien, I have taken a lot of inspiration from Alphonse Mucha and Art Nouveau.

I will post the rest bit by by, you'll get character designs, set designs, cool puppets and, maybe if I am motivated enough, a PMV !

I hope you guys will enjoy this crazy project as I do by making it !

There had been a terrible snapping, wrenching sound; then some sort of - fight, accompanied by the sounds of rending flesh and snapping teeth; then those awful green eyes had gone out, and all was silent.

In the dark, something warm and wet touched Beren’s leg. It spread, filling his nostrils with the scent of iron as it did so, and he realized that it was blood.

He could not see.

"Nóm?" he whispered in the darkness; then, louder, "Nóm!"

My almost finished Maedhros cosplay based on my very own design. Photo and edit by @thistlesandstories

The costume contains handsewn shirt (I used Lyocell instead of linen because it looks more elvish), cotton hand quilted vest with customised metal buckles, waist belt including the embossed Oath of Fëanor and wide belt adorned with Fëanorian stars made from polymer clay. The sword is a prototype made from EVA foam, but I want to make a less wrinkly one.

The bracers, the scabbard and the belt are all my own leatherwork. Details for nitpickers:

Makeup details:

Maglor dies, and so the Oath is beyond fulfilling, and so all eight of them are thrown out into the Everlasting Darkness—

and then Maglor starts singing, and they all join in, and out there beyond What Is songs have more power than perhaps they realize, and their songs make a tiny little oasis of Existence for them

which is all well and good until Fingon goes to rescue Maedhros, and Elrond wants to rescue Maglor, and Nerdanel insists on coming with them, and they find themselves in Fëanorian World

the idea of the peredhel twins having heightened senses due to their maia blood is one of the concepts ive seen floating around that i really like, so here's my take on it combined with the feanorians (+ fingon) lingering about as houseless spirits that i explored some time ago in an old inktober post 😌

houseless spirits see all, but they can't interact with the world around them so i suppose that makes for quite a static existence...but compared to an oathbound eternity in Mandos (sans Fingon??), i like to imagine they'll stay a little longer to watch over those left behind, just to make sure they're doing alright 👍🏻

some more lighthearted bonuses cuz why not:

I've read a lot of fics that show elves being reborn into bodies that retain evidence of the things that happened to them in Middle Earth - like Maedhros being reborn with only one hand - and this makes sense. Their bodies are sites of trauma, and this will change them and they way they relate to their bodies so it makes perfect sense that they might return scarred or missing limbs.

But consider: the Valar do not understand Eru's children. They do not understand what it is to inhabit a body rather than simply wear one, do not understand the interrelation of body and self.

Finrod returns. There is joy, there is sorrow, there is confusion. He looks well enough but he keeps rubbing his hands over his wrists (he had pulled so hard against Sauron's shackles that there had been little skin left), over his throat (the memory of teeth sinking into his flesh screams at him, more vivid at times than the faces of his parents as they sit before him), over his face (claws drag through his cheek daily in his memory so where are the scars). Eventually he paints onto his body the scars he knows would have existed, and this at least stops him rubbing at them for fear of smearing paint all over himself. It is not enough, but at least he is still.

It seems grotesque to the Eldar of Aman who see only an obsession with past hurts, a playacting of injury, but Finrod is loved and so his eccentricity is tolerated. As more elves return, however, it becomes clear that this is not Finrod's trouble alone. Many take Finrod's lead, painting on their bodies the patterns of scars they remember and those they know they should have borne had they survived the attacks that killed them. Some wore eyepatches over eyes that had once been injured. Some walked with limps their new bodies did not need.

When Fingon returns he paints his whole body red. It is long before he speaks at all (his voice ought to be hoarse from shouting, scratchy and painful to use but no! - how does one reconcile the memory of being beaten to a bloody pulp in the mud with the perfect, unharmed body of one's youth?), and even then he will not sing.

Much, much later when Maedhros returns, he begs Fingon to cut his hand off again.

Hello and welcome to Tolkien Gen Week!

July 3-9, 2023

This is a week to appreciate all of the incredible characters and relationships within Tolkien’s legendarium that fall under the broad category of “gen.” There is a great wealth of wonderful gen content in the Tolkien fandom, but those creations are not always the most visible because of the shipping-focused nature of fandom at large. This week is an effort to give them the appreciation they deserve.

Tolkien Gen Week began in 2018 and occurred again in 2020, 2021, and 2022, and we’re back for more from July 4-10, 2023!

Any content and creations are welcome as long as it is non-romantic and non-sexual! You can create edits, gifs, fanart, fanfic, fanmixes, and more! Please tag your posts with #tolkiengenweek AND @ mention this blog @tolkiengenweek so they can be easily found. If your submission turns into a long post, please put what you can beneath a “Keep reading” divider. You may also post your creations to our AO3 collection.

Below are some prompts for each day of the week. They are not mandatory, but they are here to inspire you. This post will lead to an explanation for each one.

The scene:

We are, perhaps, in Arda Reborn. It is Finwë's birthday begetting day. He has brought many dear friends and relatives out for a festive meal at his favorite restaurant. Finwë said he was treating everyone, but after the server brings the check, both Fëanor and Elwë reach for it.

  • They each have a hand on the check.
  • They cannot turn to violence or use any other kind of force or even be openly hostile. Finwë is right there. He would be Sad. And on his birthday begetting day!
  • The grandkid generation has mostly left the table to watch the live entertainment. Fëanor could still theoretically call upon his sons to do… something, but depending on the assistance of his children to get a check away from Thingol is not something Fëanor is willing to do when Fingolfin is also right there.
  • Also that might cause a fuss which would make Finwë Sad.
  • Most of those still at the table are neutral, as in they aren't thrilled with the idea of Fëanor or Thingol making the evening 'from them'.
  • Nothing is at stake but pride.
  • And doing something nice for Finwë which he didn't ask for and doesn't need.
