The sweet, deep and sensual perfume with notes of vanilla and spices, of the flowers of the Asian Crinole would have the ability to awaken love. Originally from the tropical Indo-Pacific, this plant was imported to Tahiti in 1845 by Dr. Johnstone.
The Asian Crinole, Crinum asiaticum, grows on the sandy shores of the islands of Polynesia where it is often called Riri and nicknamed Leek because of its resemblance to a gigantic leek.
This plant grows from an underground bulb. The lower leaves form a pseudostem from which the 10 cm wide green or yellow leaves emerge in a rosette to form large spherical clumps 1.5 m high. The deliciously fragrant, tubular, white or purplish-pink flowers with purple stamens are arranged in clusters atop thick stems.
The Asian Crinole in the language of flowers means: I have a weakness for you. The variety with white flowers is the expression of a powerful love, that with purplish pink flowers emphasizes the erotic and passionate aspect of the bond. In an already well-established couple, offering an Asian Crinole flower will be synonymous with intense happiness in the intimate relationship.

The Dartrier or Golden Ears (Senna elata) is a beautiful tree native to the Orinoco basin (Colombia and Venezuela) which has been introduced for ornamental and medicinal purposes in many countries. It has many vernacular names. Its species name, alata, which means “winged” relates to the shape of its fruits which have four wings.
The Epis d'or is a shrub 4 to 8 m high with long candelabra-like stems bearing long yellow-orange spikes. The 2 to 3 m long stems are cylindrical and twisted. On these stems are born leaves 50-80 cm long, consisting of eight to ten pairs of leaflets. These leaflets are oval with a small tip. The flower spikes consist of many small cup-shaped flowers, open at the bottom and closed with a waxy coating at the top. These erect ears measure between 15 and 40 cm in height. The leaves and flowers have a foul smell. The fruit is a straight or slightly curved, very dark brown pod, about 15 cm long, with a kind of wing on each side. The pods contain between 50 to 60 flattened triangular seeds.
The Medicin or Jatrope (Jatropha podagrica) is a very curious plant with its bottle-shaped trunk and its inflorescence which resembles red coral .
For these reasons this plant bears the common names of bottle tree, Buddha’s belly, dwarf baobab and coral plant. It is also known are the name of Medicin because of its medicinal virtues. This plant is part of the Euphorbiaceae family which also includes crotons , Christ ’s thorn and cassava .
Its botanical name Jatropha comes from the Greek words iatros and trophe , which mean “doctor” and “food” respectively, in reference to the medicinal use of the seeds. The etithete podagrica comes from the Greek poda designating the disease of gout, the symptom of which is the swelling of the foot, in reference to the swollen trunk of the plant.
The Medicin is a plant native to Central America, Guatemala to Panama, which recently arrived in Tahiti.
Its pot-bellied trunk allows it to store water during dry periods. Above the protuberance, the trunk branches out into a few short, thick stems, starting in a tuft, giving it the appearance of a “dwarf baobab”. The leaves, carried by a long fleshy stem, form dark green bouquets. They are wide and cut into three or five large lobes. In the middle of these green bouquets emerge large stems at the end of which bloom amazing clusters of small flowers. The scarlet red male flowers, called “coral flowers” have five rounded petals. The female flowers, which are green, bear fruit, funny round green capsules which explode when ripe to scatter two or three black seeds several meters away.
