The best way to remedy this that I’ve found is not to just swap out the word “said” for a different word, but to punctuate sentences with describing the actions of characters as they’re saying it, or describing how they’re saying it:
“That’s alright. What’s your name?” I asked.
“My name’s Harry Potter, although most people call me Vampire these days.” He grumbled.
I sat more upright. “Why?” I looked at him, pretending to be stupid.
“Because I love the taste of human blood.” I could tell by the way he mouthed the words he was trying to show his fangs while he talked. It just made the words sound stupid.
“Well, I’m a vampire.” I said, unimpressed.
“Really?” He seemed surprised.
“Yeah.” I said. I flicked my hair with my hands, reflexively. It made me seem more “cool”.
I tend to think it’s both a lot more fun to write, less tedious to read, and you can get across a lot more personality this way. As opposed to getting so desperate for new words to use your characters start to ejaculate whatever they’re saying
