Mini Devlog - #8
I actually spent most of this week sick unfortunately :P We did manage to get some things going this week, so it wasn’t a completely lost week. Accomplishments this week:
- Tested around with Rewired’s included button remapper (Rewired is a plugin that makes handling various controllers super easy, as well as creating default maps). It works well, but I’m wondering if I want to make something a little simpler/straight forward from a UX perspective.
- Added the ability for songs to be able to have an intro, and then being able to loop the rest of the song without replaying the intro! There are some other neat audio things I’d love to try out, but this was one that I’ve been eager about for a while!
- Started discussing some matters related to the game’s UI direction.
- Mapped out some potential screens and when over the flow of them.
- Been working on getting particle effects to spawn and position correctly
Been working with the team as well with getting a new internal site together to house/reorganize some materials and game design notes to a single platform (or to at least reduce it to fewer platforms. Trello and newer Google Sites are our best bets, but we’ve still got Google Drive for large resources and Jira for technical tasks.
Next Focus:
- Continued work on remapping controls. I might make some standard control sets (like 3 types) if I don’t feel I can get something good working quick enough.
- Continued work on a new testable build
- AI: Benching this for a bit as we focus on some other items.
- Updating the main Website and blog! I’ve already done some updates to the Patreon page, and also added a new Sodo tier!
- Continued work on UI design/planning.
- Finish updates to team site. This will greatly improve internal communication and clean up a lot of mess, as well as providing a chance to review some design items.
- Select a good company for shirt printing and enamel pin creation. If anyone has some recommendations, feel free to share!

Character Reveal: Burney
Burnard (his coworkers call him Burney), is the Supervisor of Heat Waves.
(Burney was originally designed by me, but once @eclipticafusion joined the team, I had no choice but to have him redo the design!)
This hog comes off as fairly imposing to those who don’t know him, but he’s actually a bit of an odd ball. He’s very wise, and very knowledgeable of the workings of Tropolis.
Burney is very understanding and is surprisingly cheerful most of time, though, there are moments when it can be really hard to tell when he’s getting angry or if he’s just excited about something; he’s got a bad habit of getting louder and louder mid-conversation. This attributes to the gossip of him being a rather dangerous fellow when he’s “heated up”.
Burney is capable of building complex engines and machines, such as how he built his domain in the form of a train.
He’s managed to automate a lot of the functions in his domain, with his workers mostly performing upkeep. This gives him a lot of free time to lounge about.

He’s is an avid book reader, his favorite genres being history, philosophy, psychology, and self-help books. He’s recently moved on to soap operas and dramas (leading to him sometimes crying to himself… his tears evaporating shortly after).
He also spends a LOT of time sunbathing.
While he prefers to avoid conflict, he’ll typically takes a defensive stance, able to redirect or absorb most attacks. Don’t let him cross over into a move offensive stance, as it could spell trouble for everyone.

Character Reveals: Frost and Snow
Whoa, it sure is getting cold around here!
If their names didn’t give it away already, they represent “frost” and “snow” respectively!
Frost the wolf is the supervisor of the Frost domain, while Snow the arctic fox assists as a manager.
Frost was one of the earliest characters designed for the game (years back), and was designed by Weremagnus ( @weremagnus)
Frost is big and powerful, but can also be gentle and meticulous. He’s really good at keeping people motivated with his overtly positive and cheery personality, but at times, it can get overbearing. Overall, he’s like a cool older brother (those exist btw).

Snow, while is small and not as strong, is sweet and responsible, and highly regarded by the workers in the Frost domain. She’s often Frost’s voice of reason and the more cautious of the two. She’s also quite clever.
Frost and Snow have a sibling dynamic, though it’s not always clear which one is supposed to be the “older one”
In battle, Frost is able to launch heavy ice-based attacks, utilize ice skates to increase his speed, and encase ice on himself to increase his attack power.
Snow, on the other hand, is more agile and creative, utilizing snow and employing ninja like attacks and tricks, since she lacks attack power.
As far as hobbies for the two, they are both fairly fond of keeping maintaining fitness (skating, dancing, lifting, etc), and ice sculpting. Frost in particular also likes crafting things for a certain someone…

My New Name Is T.O!
Hey all! I’m happy to see that a lot of people are fans of the recent character reveal! Now as a quick update, after receiving a few of messages regarding a possible translation of his original name being potentially vulgar, we’ve decided to change it. His new name will be T.O! Posts will be updated to reflect the change!
Outside of that, he’s still the cool cat that likes tech and old movies. (see original post here for background on T.O!)
Character Reveal: Gozo
The cool cat that’s high tech…
Gozo is a panther and member of the Criterion Crew, representing the pollutant Ground Level Ozone.

Gozo is fairly social and often works with the Raggoons and other Criterion members when needed. A self-proclaimed genius; he comes off as arrogant and pompous, but also kinda lazy when “really hard work” is involved. He also really hates being outwitted.
In battle, Gozo utilizes certain tools, and is rarely seen without the company of other pollutants. He can power himself and his tools using sunlight, and a combination of other gasses emitted by his allies, then combining them to create his own gas.
One of Gozo’s guilty pleasures is lounging about and watching old movies collected by the raggoons. His biggest pet-peeve is starting a show or movie series and finding out he doesn’t have all the episodes or sequels. He also has a lot of old tech that he should really look into upgrading…

Character Reveal: Temper
Temper is a stout hedgehog with a rather variable personality. He’s the Climate Committee’s representative for Temperature.
One would think he’s angry all of the time; his mood is actually influenced by the amount of energy he has stored up.
Temper is the “team dad” of the climate committee. He’s no-nonsense and tries to keep everyone focused, though often through intimidation. He’s quick to assess a situation, and even quicker jumping into action (if motivated that is).
Surprisingly, he can be quite reasonable if you know how to approach him.
Temper was originally designed by me, but was fleshed out more with the help of Keysa!

In battle, Temper is able to manipulate the temperature in a given area, which has effects on the area itself and those around him, sometimes complimenting his battle partners, or putting his foes at a disadvantage. He’s also able to manipulate to flow energy, allowing him to “heat things up”, or absorb energy from targets.

In terms of hobbies, Temper is quite the card player. From playing cards to collectible trading cards, you’ll see a whole new side of him if you get him heated up.

Breeze and Diana
So, you’ve seen Breeze, but you probably want to know a little more about him?
Let me tell you a little about his background:

Breeze was adopted by a firefighter and given to his daughter, Diana, a very intelligent, overly ambitious, and somewhat socially awkward pre-teen.
Diana is homeschooled, and despite being in many activities such dance, gymnastics, martial arts, and various volunteer programs, she doesn’t have a lot of friends, as many of the kids her age are intimidated by (or jealous of) her ability.

After being given Breeze, Diana slowly discovers that Breeze wasn’t like average dogs, as he near-effortlessly mimics many of the things she’s good at, as well as learning other human-like abilities and traits.

After discovering this, Diana made it her mission to teach Breeze more and more mundane, everyday tasks, followed by also introducing him to a lot of things she enjoys, such as cartoons and action films.
One of Diana’s dreams is becoming a “superhero”, or anything that’ll allow her to “save the day”. This is adopted by Breeze as well, who gradually mirrors her ambition and habits.
Breeze continues to learn things effortlessly while enjoying being praised by Diana and discovering the world around him.
