Oh fuck it all, I'm asking for help.

There is a cat I dearly love, but cannot live with because of the apartment complex's policies. He currently lives with the rest of my immediate family, a pretty long journey from where I am.

I was there when we picked him up from the shelter. I have cried into this cat's fur so many times. If I could bring him here, he would be my cat. He loves me more than any other person in the world, and I love him so, so much in return.

He is dying. He has kidney failure, and we can't pay for a new one or dialysis. He won't eat, and he's lost half his weight. He is projected to die within a week. He isn't showing any signs of pain or suffering, so we aren't going to put him down until he does.

I want to go and stay with him until he dies, because I am his favorite person and it would comfort him. I cannot do this because I would lose too much money to afford my expenses- I can't do my job from that location. I can afford two days. I have some chicken bones boiling on the stove to try to get some calories into him, and I'm buying some chicken livers later to see if that entices him to eat something. He is going to die, but he is going to die as comfortable as we can make him.

Here's the part where you can help: I work on a gig basis. This is terrible for my financial stability, but great for flexibility. I need roughly 50$ a day to survive, bare minimum. If we can cover the cost of the missed gigs, I can cancel them, and I can try to stay with this cat until he passes. That is a maximum of 250$, since I can pay up for two of the days out of my savings. Any excess funds will go towards cremation costs.

If all of you can pull together enough for even one day, 50$ to spend one more day with this cat before he passes, I would be everlastingly grateful.

If you can't donate, or want to save your money for something else, then please know that I understand. I know this isn't the most urgent or essential post on this site. I just have to try.

True info. Now let me add something: The power of documentation. (I was a long time steward in a nurses union.)

Remember: The "'E" in email stands for evidence.

That cuts both ways. Be careful what you put into an email. It never really goes away and can be used against you.

But can also be a powerful tool for workplace fairness.

Case 1: Your supervisor asks you to do something you know is either illegal or against company policy. A verbal request. If things go wrong, you can count on them denying that they ever told you to do that. You go back to your desk, or wherever and you send them an email: "I just want to make sure that I understood correctly that you want me to do xxxxx" Quite often, once they see it in writing, they will change their mind about having you do it. If not, you have documentation.

Case 2: You have a schedule you like, you've had that schedule for a while, it works for you. Your supervisor comes to you and says "We're really short-handed now and I need you to change your schedule just for a month until we can get someone else hired. It's just temporary and you can have your old schedule back after a month." A month goes by and they forget entirely that they made that promise to you. So, once again, when they make the initial request, you send them an email "I'm happy to help out temporarily, but just want to make sure I understand correctly that I will get my old schedule back after a month as you promised." Documentation.

I then left, and sent her several texts and emails saying I would like a copy of their company policy to see where this wage discussion policy was kept. She quickly called me back in to her office.

HR: You know what, there is no policy like that in the handbook! I double check. Sorry about the confusion, my apologies.

Me: You still haven't given me the paper saying that we had this discussion. I am going to need some protection against retaliation.

HR: Oh haha yes here you go.

I just received a paper with legal letterhead and an apology saying there was no verbal warning or write up. Don't even take their shit you guys. Keep talking about wages. Know your worth. /End ID]

At one of my old (shit) jobs my boss would continually come have these verbal discussions with me and would never put anything in writing I took to summarizing every discussion we had in email. Like “just to confirm that you asked me to do X by Y date and you understand that means I won’t be able to complete the previous task you gave me until Z date - 2 weeks later than originally scheduled - because you want me to prioritize this new project.

The woman would then storm back into my office screaming at me for putting the discussion in writing and arguing about pushing back the other project or whatever. At which point I would summarize that conversation in email as well. Which would bring her storming back in, rinse and repeat ad nauseum.

Anyway I cannot imagine how badly that job would have gone if I hadn’t put all her wildly unreasonable demands in writing. Bitch still hated me but she could never hang me for “missing deadlines” because I always had in writing that she’d pushed the project back because she wanted something else done first.

Paper your asses babes. Do not let them get away with shit. If they won’t put what they’re asking you to do in writing then write it up yourself and email it to them.

Ok, I need to respond to that “dominant genetic trait” tag specifically, because the reality is significantly funnier- that’s Ty Tennant, Georgia (Moffett) Tennant’s son from before she married David Tennant. David adopted him, IIRC, and he’s raised him from a very young age, so he IS David Tennant’s son, but it’s not genetic, and if you know the hilarious irony of David and Georgia’s relationship (Peter Davidson played David Tennant’s favorite Doctor, David met Georgia while he was playing the Doctor and she was playing the Doctor’s daughter, every Doctor who fan at the time was vaguely amused by this because the Doctor married the Doctor’s daughter making the Doctor become the Doctor’s father-in-law), it becomes even funnier that Ty gets to flirt with his father’s coworker. Just a recursive mess of family business hilarity. Ty deserves this opportunity.

to be clear i'm not trying to be moralizing or anything it's just important to me that people at least know they should be protecting their ears at concerts and clubs. repeated exposure to loud enough music will lead to hearing loss. you will get tinnitus. you don't want tinnitus.

I understand tinnitus can sound really vague and inconsequential to someone who hasn't experienced it, I really get where everyone making jokes about it in the notes is coming from. that said:

  • tinnitus can be extremely debilitating. mine still sometimes keeps me awake for hours at night, despite having gotten better over the years. it can make it difficult to concentrate on anything else.
  • the more you are exposed to loud sounds, the higher the chance of getting tinnitus, and the worse it will get. even if you already have it, or already have hearing loss, you should be wearing protection in places like concerts and clubs.
  • you can have both hearing loss and tinnitus.
  • there are many ways to find relief for tinnitus, and it may fade on its own, especially if you take care of your ears, but there is no known cure.

If you've never had it, I really recommend looking up videos of what tinnitus sounds like, and just imagine that, always. or go through the tags and read through what people have said about their tinnitus. wear earplugs!!!

Hi, just going to plug the headphones my husband and I have been using for YEARS at live shows: Etymotic's high fidelity earplugs:

I have worn them to so many shows and they are SO. MUCH. BETTER. than foam plugs, which I've also worn to shows. The HF earplugs allow the singing to shine, while the music still sounds great. If you have small ears, they still work! I love mine.

my biology professor has such a chaotic energy about him, last week i went to his office hours and somehow we ended up on the topic of gay marriage:

he said that when he lived in texas they changed the law to define marriage as “between a man and a woman in a house of religious worship with the intention to have children” so he filed his taxes as single and when they called him up like “you filed married last year” he was like “you changed the law, i was married by a judge in a courthouse and i have no intention of having kids” and they told him “you know who that law was for” and i guess he hung up on them and did not, in fact, pay taxes as a married man that year

In Utah the new book banning laws apply to the bible, and there’s already someone petitioning to get it removed from schools and libraries.

i like the term "gallows humor" because it always makes me think of someone getting sentenced to death and being like "i have GOT to be the funniest person at my public execution"

ppl complaining about the writers strike are weak & lame for obvious reasons, but also bc of their reliance on new/current shows. like...develop an unhealthy & isolating hyperfixation on a 20+ years old television show like the rest of us...
