Do you have any advice for student that want to learn dutch?

Hey anon,

How awesome that you are willing to learn dutch. Since our country is quite small, and our language is considered ugly (Which I agree with sometimes ;))

1. First of all, get a hang of the dutch grammar. Dutch grammar can be very confusing even for native speakers. These are the most confusing grammar rules:

2. IDIOMS, the dutch language is full of idioms and expressions. They are used very often in conversations and determine our language culture

3. You might want to immerse yourself in some dutch culture through media

  • you can listen to dutch radio here
  • all public dutch television can be seen live/rewatched on NPO, basically anything from child television to documentaries about dykes etc.
  • some famous dutch news sites (x) (x) (x), if you select ‘’binnenland’’ you will get lots of news about things that happen inside the netherlands
  • Dutch music :) I made a list of some of my personal recommendations here, but here (x) (x) are some spotify lists.

4. When you would like to expand your vocab:

  • Watch the national dictation. Don’t be intimitated by it tho, almost no dutch native makes it without any mistakes. There is also a kid’s version, which may be nice to start with.
  • Follow ‘’one word a day’’ from Van Dale on twitter. Besides, Van dale is the most famous dictionary brand in the netherlands.
  • Some dutch slang words

5. And lastly, enjoy!

Dutch people don’t take grammar and spelling to seriously. The Dutch language has adopted a lot of words from other languages. So an English word in a conversation doesn’t bother the Dutch.

Here are some other tumblr resources to may help you:

If you have any questions about dutch grammar/idioms/vocab/culture feel free to contact me :) Or if you are willing to have a chat in Dutch oc.

Good luck with your studies!

X, Kiki

International Music!

So I don’t know if this is well known or not, but YouTube has “Top Tracks” playlists from all around the world. Most playlists update daily so you can keep finding new songs as they are released! The only downsides are that English songs have made their way into/dominated many playlists and some of the videos are blocked outside of their own country.

Dutch Swearwords.

  • Oh mijn god - Oh my god
  • Godverdomme - Goddamnit
  • Gadverdamme - Mostly used in the Netherlands in gross situations. - Gadverdamme, Josh threw up!
  • Idioot - Idiot
  • Hou je kop - Shut up (literally ‘shut your head/face)
  • Kak (Dutch), stront (Belgian) - Shit - ‘Kak, I’m late’, ‘Het is strontweer’ (It’s shitweather)
  • Kut - Quite vulgar word for vagina. Used like ‘shit’ or ‘fuck’ - ‘Kut! I forgot my homework!’ You can also put ‘kut’ before any word. If you fall off the stairs, you can say ‘Kut trap!’.  You got stung by a bee? ‘Kut bij!’
  • Klote(n) - Quite vulgar word for balls.- ‘Kus mijn kloten!’ (Kiss my balls), ‘Wat een kloteweer’ (Literally: What a ballweather.) You can, like ‘kut’, put ‘klote’ before any word.
  • Pik - Quite vulgar word for penis - Wat doe je nou, pik?! (What are you doing now, dick?!)
  • (Rot)zak - Literally (rotting) sack. - Dick, prick,…
  • Lik mijn reet - Lick my ass
  • Kus mijn reet - Kiss my ass
  • Homo - Gay man
  • Flikker - Faggot
  • Pot - Gay woman
  • Mongool - Disabled person
  • Debiel - Disabled person
  • Hoer - Whore
  • Teef - Bitch
A lot of Dutch people consider diseases like cancer, tyfus,… as swearwords for some reason.  They combine it with anything; from ‘Kankerweer’ (cancerweather) to ‘Kankerhoer’ (cancerwhore) to ‘Tyfuslijer’ (Tyfussufferer). Although you may hear this a lot in the Netherlands, this is uncommon in Belgium.
Words like flikker and pot also are very offensive to gay people.
Please do not do this EVER; even if you hear others say it.

Any suggestions? Comment :) x Tamara

Dutch songs that you won’t find in the top charts because they’re too hipster

EDIT: after receiving some comments, ok they are maybe not super hipster, but I tried to compile a list of good Dutch songs that are, in my mind, sometimes hard to find. Frans Bauer is not really the type of music I would like to limit myself to when learning Dutch hehe.

So I always like to listen to a bit more alternative songs, but usually they are quite hard to find in a language you don’t know as they are not really the kind of songs that you will find while Googling for ‘best *insert language* music’. In this post I want to give you some dutch songs that I really like, that are a little less mainstream. Some are less unknown than others, but all of them are dutch and hipster. Hopefully you will find it useful!

Aandacht - Linde Schöne

Afdwaalt - Eefje de Visser Hartslag - Eefje de Visser Ongeveer - Eefje de Visser

Ik wil alleen maar zwemmen - Spinvis Bagagedrager - Spinvis

Afblijven - Clean Pete Sorry als ik stoor - Clean Pete

Huilen & Haten - O, Kutjes

Zonder Jou - Miss Montreal

Oceaan - Racoon

Dat ik je mis - Maaike Ouboter

Mag ik dan bij jou - Claudia de Breij

Het regent zonnestralen - Acda & De Munnik Mooi Liedje - Acda & De Munnik Niet of nooit geweest - Acda & De Munnik

Meer kan het niet zijn - BLØF, Sabrina Starke Harder dan ik hebben kan - BLØF Zo stil - BLØF For the advanced learners I could also recommend De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig, but keep in mind that there lyrics don’t make sense AT ALL and even native speakers cannot make sense out of it haha

Please feel free to suggest more songs! I will add them!

Dutch vocab list LOVE

I had a lot of fun making this, but I also found out that words that have to do with love ARE SO CULTURE RELATED!! I tried to make the best translations possible, although it was very hard sometimes haha! Enjoy!

De liefde = the love Het hart = the heart De kus = the kiss De zoen = the kiss Het gevoel = the feeling De romantiek = the romance Het afspraakje = the date De relatie = the relationship De vriendschap = the friendship De verloofde = the fiancé De vriend(in)* = the girl/boyfriend Het huwelijk = the marriage De trouwerij = the wedding Het liefdesverdriet = the lovesickness De seks = the sex De maagd = the virgin De huwelijksreis = the honeymoon Mijn man = my husband Mijn vrouw = my wife

Ik ben verliefd = I am in love Ik houd van jou = I love you Jij houdt van mij = You love me Wij houden van elkaar = We love eachother Ik vind je leuk = I like you Valentijnsdag = Valentine’s Day

Trouwen = to marry Knuffelen = to cuddle Zoenen = to kiss (Iemand) versieren = to flirt (with someone) De liefde bedrijven = to make love Scheiden = to divorce Vreemdgaan = to cheat

Lekker ding! = hottie! Schatje = baby/cutie

Liefde op het eerste gezicht = love at first sight Vlinders in je buik  = butterflies in your stomach De bloemetjes en de bijtjes = The birds and the bees Kom je hier vaker? = Do you come here often?

*If you have studied Dutch for a while, you will notice that the word for ‘friend’ and ‘boy/girlfriend’ are the same in Dutch (vriend(in)). I depends on the context which ‘friend’ people refer to. Hij is een vriend van mij = He is a friend of mine Hij is mijn vriend = He is my boyfriend (although this could also just mean that he is your friend) It is tricky, but I hope you can figure it out!
