General enthusiasms: history, geography, languages, media of all sorts, education, food, friendship, justice, and hard-earned optimism. Hello again, tumblr!

How does this work? I don’t even remember. I’d forgotten that there were message… box… thingies instead of fanmail. Did they take replies away again? Look at me, being hip with the technology.

At any rate, I don’t know how many of you are still around and following, but I just wanted to let folks know that I’m still alive and doing okay. Here’s the updates in the form of a numbered list:

1. Work is very, very busy. I’m a full time teacher and seventh grade advisor now, and though it takes up a lot of my time, for the most part it’s been pretty rewarding. We’ve really built up and perfected our revolutions-based history curriculum, the kids are enjoying Latin, and I’ve been able to be involved in social justice initiatives. Yay!

2. After the 2016 election, I was despairing daily and screaming into the void a lot. Over time, though, I’ve gotten involved in progressive state-level electoral politics, and learned about things like fundraising and organizing. Like school, it’s been a time sink, but ultimately rewarding, and I’ve developed some cool new skills. Also, turns out real life revolution involves a lot of logistics. A lot.

3. I wrote a whole entire play! I’m on draft 3 of said play! It’s set in Ancient Rome and it’s about the life of Fulvia. I also wrote a contemporary one-act that I’m going to try to submit to a one-acts festival this year. It will likely get rejected, but mostly I just want to practice submitting a thing.

I had to put down my FREV writing for a while, but I’ve got some plans to take it up again soon. I’ve purchased some new books for research and am beginning to outline ideas for a story. Would love to bounce it off folks if they are interested.

Here’s the other part to this post: I don’t know if I’ll be able to come back to tumblr any time in the near future. I have a habit of putting a bunch of things on my plate. But I miss talking to a lot of you guys, and even if I can’t interact daily as much as I used to, I’d love to have people’s contact info so we can email here and there.

So, if you’d like my email address, send me a message? I’ll check my messages over the next few days and try to send you my contact info so you can reach out if you want. No pressure, of course! I know everyone else is busy too and sometimes people shift fandoms and such and don’t even remember who I am. But I’m especially happy to talk about Latin, the French Revolution, all sorts of history, teaching, books, and writing, and go on trading recipes and such.

PS: Maratplushie is doing ok as well and urges you to be vigilant against the enemies of the people. I’m sure that’s most of what you wanted to know, right?

Hi, this is just a reminder that I’m alive and well, and that I’d love to correspond with some of you via email! I don’t know if I’ll be returning to tumblr any time in the forseeable future, but would love to swap contact info if you’re around and would like to share it. Just send me a message? Thanks <3

yall have no idea how much i want my job title to be “federally paid lesbian farmer”

I love how everything Rush Limbaugh wants us to fear actually just sounds delightful. Please, send us more of the federally paid lesbian farmers!

Images from Kris Sanford’s Through the Lens of Desire series. In this series, Sanford takes moments of private intimacy captured in personal photographs from the past, and reimagines them as queer.

She writes, “Growing up queer, I searched for a history that spoke to me—included me.  In my family history, there were no couples that mirrored my own intimate relationships. That didn’t keep me from imagining such couples. … By purposefully selecting images that picture men together and women together I am creating an imaginary queer past.  I am drawn to the subtle points of contact and the spaces between the figures pictured.  Each gesture or distracted glance holds a story, and it is these stories that reflect my own desire and experiences. … My images are works of fiction, where I project my own dreams onto moments from the past.” Image titles: 1. Folding Chairs 2. Flowered Dresses 3. Like Spoons 4. Necklace 5. The Garden 6. The Mentor 7. Buttons 8. Fence 9. Hat 10. Polka Dots More pictures from the series here. If anyone is kind enough to offer sources specifically pertaining to the Sans Culottes, especially those relating to the culture of Sans Culottes (music, pedagogy, gender roles, etc.), I would be eternally grateful. I’ll draw you something if you’d like. Please. P l e a s e

Hey! I did some more digging, so here we go. :)

Here is an article on the Sans-culottes from the Dictionnaire historique de la Révolution française. It is more of a general introduction, but I think it is great; plus, it refers to a lot of sources which could also be helpful.

Here is the post on Republican pedagogy that I already sent you, but I thought I’d share it here so that others who are interested can find it, too. :)

Here is an article on Republican education in general, also from the Dictionnaire historique ; it is not specifically about the Sans-culottes, but it might be helpful, too.

Here is an article on women & feminism during the Revolution, which might give an indication of the changing gender roles.

Here is an article on Revolutionary language policy, which has an interesting part about a book called Grammar of the Sans-Culottes.

Finally, here is an article on the revolutionary practice of tutoiement, which was also part of the identity of the Sans-culottes.

I hope that helps! :)

I believe The Women of Paris and their Revolution, book by Dominique Godineau, is primarily about sans-culotte women.

EMPIRE OF COLOUR - FROM POMPEII TO SOUTHERN GAUL: Exhibition at Toulouse, France

OUR contributor, Carole, travelled to Toulouse, France to visit the exhibition on Roman frescoes being held at the Musee Saint-Raymond museum. The exhibition is called ‘Empire of Colour - From Pompeii to Southern Gaul’.

The majority of the frescoes were found in Campania and have been largely preserved by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. This major exhibtion is showcasing 79 works of art and aims to show the evolution of Roman painting in Southern Gaul, by bringing them face-to-face with Italian models, particularly by showing the four Pompeian styles.

so apparently, monocles became a popular fashion accessory amongst lesbians in the early 20th century. there was even a lesbian bar in Paris in the 1920s named Le Monocle.

#bringbacklesbianmonocles2k16

have some pics. le monocle was a wild, wild ride.

-apollo, the titan’s curse

laughing bc i distinctly remember this one myth where apollo fell in love with this one girl but she didnt return his affections and turned into a tree instead 😂 (teashoesandhair maybe correct me if i’m wrong?)

You are so right!! That would be Daphne - a nymph who Apollo saw and he was all “damn, I’m going to climb you like a tree” and Daphne was like “what a great idea, I’m going to make like a tree and leave” and she asked her dad Peneus to turn her into a laurel tree, because she just wasn’t ready to settle down and put down roots with Apollo and she wanted to branch out

I’m in awe of how many awful puns you fit in to that reply.

Excuse me they were all absolutely incredible puns so if you’re looking for bad puns here then you’re barking up the wrong tree

So we all know that ‘sex between women was never illegal because Queen Victoria didn’t think it was possible’ is a common misconception, but DID YOU KNOW that it was historically never part of British law because (in the 1920’s) politicians were too worried that, through the act of writing it into law, it would ~give women ideas~??

is there a period lesbian drama set in 1921 uk called “a very great mischief”, and if not why not

I just need everyone to know how much I really, really, REALLY hate Aristotle.

And there are three kinds of hatred for Aristotle, the first being visceral, so called because it rises from the intestines and through the middle of a person, yet never wanes nor increases but remains constant; and the second is called passive, and this occurs when a scholar or reader comes upon the works of Aristotle by chance, without seeking them out of their own volition, but rather confronted with them unexpectedly as a man set upon by bandits along a lonely road, but this sort of anger passes quickly; but indeed the third is active, and this occurs when a person seeks out Aristotle with the particular intention of becoming choleric; this sort of person seeks out the works of Aristotle wherever they may be found so that they might read them and thereby conjure up some bilious reason to cast invective and rebuke upon his theories and observations, and this anger is kept by its possessor at a boil.
