I'm about to get my very first tarot deck soon and im so excited!!! I was wondering if theres any first steps to using tarot? I've been trying to memorize the meanings of all the cards but I'm very forgetful as it is >~
Donโt stress too much about memorizing the meanings of the cards! Its totally ok to use a guidebook! And use the guidebook, its useful! You will learn the cards better as you go and as you practice, but seriously if you cant memorize the cards its totally ok. One thing I definitely recommend is getting a journal for your tarot journeyโฆ write down spreads, meanings of cards to YOU, every reading you do (I am not kidding, this helps - and you can go back later too), different symbolism you see in the cardsโฆ basically whatever you want that you think is helpful.ย
Ok so when I first get a new deck, the first thing I like to do is to go through the deck. One to make sure all of the cards are there (I have had one deck missing a card - stuff happensโฆ whatever.), but the other reason is to get to know the cards a little, individually. I kinda do this part twice, once to just flip through and make sure all the cards are actually there, and second time to actually go through and look at the cards and the symbolism and see if I get anything special with each card. Connect with each card a bit. Once you have connected a little bit with the deck by looking at the cards, wake that baby up and shuffle it! Shuffle it as much or as little as you like, but I feel like this helps me connect with the energy of the deck a bit.
Next thing I like to do is to actually do a reading with the deck. The first reading I do is almost always a deck interview. You can see an example of one hereย that I did with one of my decks. Its a good way to get introduced with the deck, and get a feel for its personality. These types of spreads are also really useful for checking in on the deck, and seeing how its personality evolves over time.
Another thing I tend to do with a new deck is to carry it around a bit, or sleep next to it for awhile (like on my bedside, I donโt cuddle it - but if thats your thing then thats awesome too!). The reason I do this is to bond with the deck and get used to its energy, as well as it get used to mine as well too.ย
And I think thats kinda it for my usual routine with a new deck! You obviously are more then welcome to do what you like, but I personally find that useful for my own practice with tarot. You will also (if you buy more decks) eventually get your own routine, and you are more then welcome to use all or some or none of this. But remember tarot is fun and donโt feel pressured to memorize everything or feel like you need to do a reading every day unless you want to (I canโt keep up with daily readings at the moment so I kinda stick to weekends). Donโt be afraid of how much energy you may put into your first few readings as well - you can feel drained after a reading and thats normal. It will get better with practice. But basically practice and have fun as far as learning it and you will get there! If you ever need help just let me know!
The Wild Unknown Deck Interview
So I got this deck awhile ago, and am just now getting around to shuffling it and doing a deck interview. I love this deck so much, the artwork is incredible, and is so easy to read, and I can honestly say I am so happy I added this deck to my arsenal. I look forward to working with this deck! If you are requesting a reading, and want me to use this deck, just let me know!
Also sorry for no picture. I was going to take one, then forgot and just figured I would post this. Maybe I will retroactively post a picture with it!
1. Tell me about yourself. Daughter of Wandsย
This deck is artistic, and might be a bit of a free spirit. She can find the light in even the darkest circumstances and bring a little color to the situation. She is strong and powerful, but not arrogant, and is ready to handle the infinitely different possibilities that we will explore together.
2. What are your strengths?ย 6 of Pentaclesย
This is a generous deck. While I certainly think she may be hinting that it may be a good idea to consult her for money matters, more importantly she will show me when to spread any wealth around when I can. And not just for financial matters - time, love, wisdom. She is good at showing you how to graciously give, as well as accept when needed.
3. What are your weaknesses? The Sunย
I am not going to lie, I really had to decode the meaning of this one at first. Its a strange card to land up in the weaknesses section of a deck interview. Although for me it boiled down to a mix of two things. 1) This deck may be a little overly positive at times and 2) might be a little intense. ย Either way, shes very unapologetic about both of those weaknesses.
4. What can you teach me? 2 of Cups
Well now! Now this card has the obvious meanings of love, and romance and soulmates and all that, I think it has a slightly different meaning for this spread. She is telling me she can teach me with my connections and relationships, be they friends, family, strangers. She will help me connect with others, or even things at times, because she knows that is something I need help with. I tend to withdraw into my shell a little too much sometimes, so I think she is going to help me out of it.
5. How can I best learn from/collaborate with you? 2 of Pentaclesย
This is one of those cards that when I drew it, I knew this deck was going to be a favorite. This deck is going to teach me balance. No matter what needs balance, this deck is going to help me achieve that. Which is honestly, exactly what I need in my life right now. She will help me look at all the factors in a situation, no matter how difficult, and find the balance and beauty in it.
6. What is the outcome of us working together? The High Priestess
Oh, how this card in this position makes me really happy. This deck is going to help me along in my spirituality and knowledge. She is calm and confident that she will do so, but again not cocky. I have the whole universe of information in front of me, free for learning but not to be contained.
Work Song by Hozier except itโs being sung by what sounds like a few fellow laborers a ways up the coal mine that youโre working in. Itโs dark and cold and grueling work, but whoever the singer is, he has a sweet story and a sweeter voice, and morale seems to pick up with each beat.ย
By the end the entire mine has begun mining in harmony, but as you look for the source of the songโฆ no one claims the credit.ย
