It’s interesting how being introduced to a new concept from a different point can make you have a completely different feeling reg smth that a lot of ppl hate.
I was first introduced to webp through my job. Because it makes optimization for our games so much faster and makes it possible for us to have more effects and art assets without affecting performance even for players on older* devices. Before webp we would have to manually go through every art asset and resize it down to save space and many times it would affect the image quality. Webp keeps the files big and hi-res but way way lighter. So thats my own first introduction to webp.
So i was actually surprised to see so many hate posts for the format. But when i read up on the reasons I definitely understand why. But i also hope ppl understand why a lot of websites are moving over to webp because it saves up so much server space.
(* in this case iphone 7 is the oldest one we optimize for rn. Which imo isnt old enough.)
