umm i need reassurance that my presence is wanted but i can’t ask for reassurance because that’s really Embarrassing and it wouldn’t feel genuine if i asked for it

Anonymous asked:

what is good sharpening vs oversharpening? im sorry if i have oversharpened anything i am to new to this

It's a great question! There are a lot of reasons that oversharpening is a problem and just one is that it causes intense colorwashing. Oversharpening introduces excess graininess that skews skin tones and accentuates stray highlights that can wash out a gif.

I want to preface this post with this: I am not here to shame anyone who is oversharpening.

The most important part of this answer is to bring awareness of why these basic steps of gifmaking are so important to the whole process.

Each of these gif pairs are uncolored, unedited, and has the same save settings. The only difference is the sharpening settings that are listed on each gif. The left side has my usual sharpening filters, and the right side has the filters that usually lead to oversharpening.

(Kate Sharma, Bridgerton, 2022, 1080p footage live action)

(Matilda, 1996, 1080p footage live action)

(Barbara Howard, Abbott Elementary, 2022, 1080p footage live action)

(Miles Morales, Into the Spider-verse, 2018, 1080p footage animated)

It's not a crime to oversharpen your gifs, but it does lead to the slippery slope of colorwashing (even for white people).

Look for the halo: If you look at the oversharpened gif of Barbara, you can see a yellow outline around her hair. That is an obvious indicator of going too far.

Use a layer mask to see what the colors were before sharpening: you can see in most of the oversharpened gifs above that there is a huge difference in the colors shown vs. in the less sharpened gif.

If you're working with older footage: don't try to overcorrect the graininess of the media. It's okay if some of it comes through!

Try to get the highest quality footage you can: I primarily work in 1080p files because my poor laptop starts to sound like a plane taking off when I try to screencap 4K files. If you're like me, look for larger file sizes. That will reduce the graininess of the gif.

Here are some links to different sharpening actions and guides: daenerys-stormborn action anyataylorjoy action anya-chalotra sharpening guide

These are great to use if you are starting out in Photoshop! (psst if you need a hookup lmk) I know some people don't use PS, and for them, I put my sharpening settings on this post. I think both of the action sets I linked above have similar if not the same settings.

Also, one thing I noticed when making the gif pairs is that the less sharpened gif was always a smaller size. Fixing sharpening settings might help people who are trying their best to keep things under the 10mb limit.

I hope this answered your question, anon. If anyone has any questions or would like other resources, let me know!

we don't talk enough about what a hypocrite jaime lannister is, the man will call brienne 'wench' in almost every sentence about her but if anybody else has the audacity to call her that or something else unflattering it's always "HER NAME IS BRIENNE!!!" dude your unreliable narrator is showing

Something I find fascinating about this dynamic is that in A Feast for Crows, Jaime thinks of Brienne as “wench” exactly one time: immediately preceding the “Father give her strength” prayer in his first POV chapter of the book. After that, it’s just "Brienne” or "my lady" or “the Maid of Tarth” and never again wench. And after the bear pit in A Storm of Swords, he still uses it sparingly, and in the way he might use “Kingslayer” to refer to himself.

Imo, “wench” is a barrier in Jaime’s mind and after the bathtime confession and the bear pit, he’s reframing the way he thinks about Brienne without realizing that he’s doing it. “Wench” is used to other her, to needle her. By the end of ASOS it softens. Initially, he uses it like a line in the sand or a weapon to to use against her while he can’t use his actual weapon. By the end of ASOS, it’s more of a firm hand on the shoulder. It’s Jaime losing his resolve to keep her on the “other” side of his line in the sand.

So I think that by the time AFFC Jaime I comes around, after he’s sent her away with all the protection he can offer, “wench” isn’t even necessary anymore. And that line, “Father give her strength,” that’s when he finally eases out of seeing her as an other. Jaime does not pray, but he prayed for her. He prayed for Brienne.

So when Connington comes along and calls her “wench” multiple times in the same conversation, when he speaks the same words about Brienne that Jaime had once thought himself (”sow in silk” and “wench” and jokes about what she looks like naked), it’s the moment that Jaime’s defenses against how he feels toward Brienne finally breaks. There’s no more “wench” from him, no more jokes at her expense. The next time he sees her, he calls her “my lady”, shows concern for her wellbeing, and abandons his men to follow her without even knowing where she’s going. We call that growth and you love to see it!!!

Down a Rabbit Hole I Went

I screwed up. I didn't think that using an ancient language on a piece of tumblr merch was necessary but I forgot what site I was on :) . This is tumblr, of course it has to be in linguistically accurate cuneiform. I went and hired an expert on Ancient Semitic Languages and Cultures. There aren't as many as you'd think that are willing to translate text for an internet gag so I'm so happy I found Paul.

Notes on the translation from the translator:

I used the ventive suffix on the imperative "give (rib+am)" which is a special feature of Akkadian that indicates the motion of direction. It makes it a little bit more authentic. The longer version actually includes the words "to me (ana iasim)", but a typical Akkadian speaker probably wouldn't have needed to say that.

Also, for the word "money" I used the Sumerian (KUG.BABBAR) instead of spelling out the Akkadian, because that was a common feature in Akkadian scribal writing. For the font I was happily surprised that Google has a Cuneiform font, so not only is it correct but it looks pretty neat too. Right now you can buy both versions in the shop but cuneiform version won't ship for a week or so as I have to order new stock with the new design.
