Jess and Miguel defender
y’all want them to be villains so bad it’s pathetic

I think a lot about how Miguel's personal friends and family kept throwing him their opinions on SpiderMan either telling him that Miguel would never be as good person as Spidey (his mom) or that Spiderman was an asshole (his ex girlfriend) or falling in love with him (his brothers girlfriend)

Meanwhile he's just staring into the camera, beaten up, tired, depressed and wanting to kill himself like "uh-hm. That's such an interesting conversation"

also isn't it ridiculously insensitive to call the spider society a cult. like cults are things Real People have gone through. and to be someone who has never experienced this, only knows cults from random tumblr posts, going all "This organization is a cult actually and these teenagers got groomed into it" like can you not hear yourself. if i were a cult survivor i'd be pissed, personally

That, and like... no one groomed teenagers into it. Like Miguel did NOT want Gwen and Miles involved but Gwen- who had isolated herself from her friends- felt like she had no where else to go and begged to be let in. This is why she freaks out when they kick her out, not because they are trying to manipulate her.

YES THANK YOU. people see miles and gwen and refuse to see them as flawed and complex, capable of making their own bad decisions of their own free will. it's always someone else's fault, somebody being too harsh on them or manipulating them.

yes, gwen and miles are teenagers, their behavior is largely influenced by the adults surrounding them. but to say they cannot make bad choices and experience the repercussions of them is depriving them of autonomy. they are not real teenagers being victimized, they are characters in a movie who make choices and have to deal with the consequences.

gwen got kicked out of the spider society because she didn't do her job correctly. she was not kicked out of a cult for disobeying, she was fired from her job because she messed up so badly. and to ignore that, to say she was a victim of miguel's manipulation, is a disservice to the nuance of the writing of this movie

so, then, what IS up with miguel o’hara’s moral backbone?

lol sorry if y’all’re sick of my 2099 soapboxing. anyways.

while i understand where the reading of “miguel is a morally bankrupt evil scientist and his spider-man is just a violent shitheel” comes from, i just… really can’t ever get behind it, based on what we see in the text of SM2099 v1 (1992-1996) itself.
