Dr. Geoffrey M'Benga Reporting

@drmbenga / drmbenga.tumblr.com

I am Dr. Geoffrey M'Benga, medical officer assigned to the Starship Enterprise. Since I took my medical internship on Vulcan, I am an expert in Vulcan medicine, anatomy, and psychology. I have been told that I have taken on quite a few of the stoic traits from my studies, but I still like to think I have at least some human sense of humor left in me.
STARFLEET MEDICAL { LIEUTENANT }OOC: RP blog for Geoffrey M'Benga from Star Trek TOS. Willing to RP in TOS as well as AOS or any crossovers/fandoms. I do not own Dr. M'Benga nor Star Trek. Both mun and muse are over 18. No images on this blog are mine unless otherwise stated. Tracking the tag drmbenga

I‘m just going to come out and say this. I am going to be retiring from roleplaying. It’s not that I don’t like it anymore, I’ve just had absolutely no muse to do anything RP related recently. Heck, even the Star Trek Convention didn’t do much and neither did trying a new muse! It is prolly for the best though. I’m going to be starting school here next week and I’m taking a TON of hours both this semester and the next in order to graduate finally by next Spring.

This isn’t completely goodbye. I’m keeping these blogs up in case I come back, but I also plan on following quite a few of you because I enjoy your stuff! I’ll just be following y’all from my personal instead. I’m also going to try to continue asksorelcorrigan because as a reference blog rather than a strictly RP blog, I think it’d still be good for me to try (but again, I’d only update it when I have relevant science rants or questions to answer). Though I need to figure out how to connect the two because my personal blog is old enough to have an email I actually can’t access anymore. :|

I also want to say that it really has nothing to do with anyone here or the community as a whole. I have said on many ocassions that the Star Trek RP community is the kindest and most welcoming and most fun I’ve ever been a part of (the Disney one has sooooo much OOC drama, you guys don’t even know)! So don’t worry. I’m just ready to take a BREAK. You guys have really meant a lot to me and this whole experience with this blog (holy crap has it really been two years? That makes Geoff my longest running RP blog by a whole YEAR) has helped me so much get through my depression. It truly means the world to me. And by ‘it’ I mean this community and the times I have had with all of you.

Again, this isn’t a full goodbye. I am not completely leaving everyone and I would love to chat with y’all OOC on my personal etc.

The url to my personal is megers67 so don’t be alarmed at a personal following you. Just little ole me!

Five-Toed and Four-Toed Manis (Chinese and Long-tailed Pangolin [Manis pentadactyla, Phataginus tetradactyla])

These pangolins are two of the eight extant pangolin (also known as scaly anteater or trenggiling) species.

The scales of these creatures are keratin - the same substance that makes our hair, fingernails, toenails, and rhino horns. They’re extremely effective as defense mechanisms, as the pangolin is able to hide all vulnerable parts of its body under spikes!

These creatures are also known as scaly anteaters due to their dietary habits: they love ants and termites. In fact, most of the time, pangolins don’t walk on the massive claws of their front feet, which are reserved for digging into ant and termite mounds and for some species, climbing trees.

Pangolins are native to south-east Asia and Central Africa, and are the most trafficked endangered animals in the world, both for the bushmeat and “traditional medicine” trades. The Asian pangolins are more endangered than the African pangolins. Because of their nocturnal habits and smallish size (even the largest giant pangolins are under 33 kg/75 lb, and most are much smaller), pangolins are more difficult to protect than the charismatic megafauna that have come to symbolize the animal-parts trade (such as rhinos, elephants, and tigers). Also confounding their protection is the lack of awareness of their plight.

No part of the pangolin confers any medicinal properties or compounds. They’re amazing lovely creatures that should be left where they are, to live their wonderfully scaly lives in peace. They’re not good pets, they’re not good trophies, and they’re useless for “medicine”.

//PANGOLINS. SAVE THE CUTIES! SAVE THE POOR BABIES!

The Minds of Men and... Plants

Continued from Here

His fingers found the comm and keyed in the code for the bridge. "M'Benga to the bridge. Captain, I have received… a distress signal of sorts. Apparently there’s a mass murder going on. I will need Commander Spock to aid me in pinpointing the location.”

The entire ordeal placed a heavy pressure on his forehead between the eyes. The doctor wasn’t sure if it was the mental trauma he just went through, the memory of the past, emotional exhaustion or as a direct result of the spores’ contact. Likely it was a result of all three. At first he hadn’t been sure what ‘they’ were when he was first contacted, but now that he had a few moments to think on it more clearly, it was clear. These were the psionic spores from Delta Gamma IV. But they were different now. Before they simply hitched rides in the minds pf animals like burrs on clothing, and they never conversed with the Enterprise when contact was first made. This was different and Geoff had no idea what happened or what was happening now. Guess he didn’t need Spock to help him figure out where to go anymore.

The CMO gave a sigh, tilting his head to look towards M’Benga with a steady gaze. He didn’t know why he and Christine were so worked up, he was ғɪɴᴇ. Placing the PADD back onto his desk, he sat back in his chair, masking the wince at the pressure against his back with a half smile.

❝ Just because I’m healing doesn’t    mean I can’t do my job, Geoffrey.

“If our positions were reversed, you’d be saying the same things I am.” Geoff would be trying to get his hands on work just like Leonard was, but that was beside the point. It was well known that on the Enterprise, a starship full of workaholics, the doctors tended to be the worst patients. M’Benga wasn’t about to budge. Just like the other doctors, he had a duty to tend to the health of everyone on the ship. And that included their CMO.

“I don’t think you need a lecture on how many of which muscles are used just to stay sitting up.” Geoff crossed his arms and watched his friend expectantly.

It’s just a flesh wound

“I’ll send you a copy of the itinerary that I’m going to do with the tests, then you can double check with the others.”  That was one thing he didn’t mind passing off on Geoff.  The pork chop tasted good but he must not have been as hungry as he thought, by the time he was half way through it he didn’t want to finish it.  He tried to eat more though, he knew Geoff would be on his case right behind Chris if he didn’t eat something.  They’d been down on the planet for at least 12 hours and he wasn’t sure he’d eaten the whole time.  Come to think of it, he should be starving but he wasn’t.
“Sounds good.  If anyone can find some use of what we bring up, it’ll be Sulu.  Even if it’s nothing more than adding to the garden.”  Crew loved walking through the garden, it helped them feel like they were home, even if they were as far away from it as you could possibly be.  Picking up his glass, he drank half the water in a few gulps, then scowled at Geoff.  “Gee, thanks, that’s something I want to hear after I’ve been on a planet in the first time in god knows how many weeks.”
Letting out a snort, he picked at the rest of his pork chop.  “You don’t look all that great yourself, you know.  But fine, just to shut you up as soon as the plants are cleared and I start the tests, I’ll get a few hours of sleep.  Then you’re going to do the shame.”  He gave Geoff an evil smile.  “Or I’ll sic Christine on you and get her to make you get some sleep.”  As much as he didn’t want to admit it, he was feeling a little tired.  Maybe he’d over done it down there.  Then again, he hadn’t felt tired since before Olduvai, not that he’d tell Geoff that.  Maybe he had been pushing his limits lately.  “But it’ll have to wait until everything else is done first.  We can’t have anyone standing around doing nothing, can we?”  This time he let out a small chuckle.

Geoff had intended that Leonard get some sleep a bit sooner... as in after they ate. But getting him to admit that he did in fact need rest at all and agree to it was a miracle in itself so the doctor wasn’t about to get choosy just yet. Keeping an eye on him until that time will have to suffice. “Fine, fine. We have a deal. We’ll both rest once things get squared away,” he managed to get out around a mouthful of sandwich. He swallowed before he continued. “Nothing is more terrifying than Chris on a mission.”

Truth be told, he could use the rest. Going down to a planet had been a nice change of pace, but nice scenery or no, 12 hours of work was still nothing to sneeze at. They were all going to need rest. Leonard probably moreso than the others was difficult to pin down. While the man seemed to have perpetually more energy than anyone else, everyone needs to rest sometime. It was nice that he didn’t have to pull teeth to get it done this time. One less thing to worry about.

The meal was finished without much fanfare as M’Benga was eager to get started on getting the research in planned so they could all take a well-deserved break all the sooner. He had left Leonard at his office so he could get his proposed research plans in order while Geoff worked on his own list, planning to simply cross off any that his friend’s research might satisfy. It would be easier this way. Walking into Leonard’s office, he did notice something that gave him cause for concern. “Are you sure you’re alright? You’re looking a little pale.”

Okay so people who actually check this blog may have realized that I have changed my theme. While I was at it, I decided that I want a new icon as it was bothering me that I based it off of the Red Cross rather than the caduceus. My dumb brain also decided that I should play around with the colors.

Fun fact: I know absolutely nothing about color theory.

At first I used basic colors (the grid isn’t in any actual order) but then eventually started desperately pulling from palettes I found online. And everything is now kind of a mess.

Anyway, I’m putting the choice up to you folks. Are there any of these that you think would make a good icon? P is there for you to suggest your own color combo to me. I was just kind of choosing randomly and I know there are people out there who know way more about this or simply like an unlisted combo better.

So I guess reply to this post or send me an ask or something if you have any preference at all. Thank you in advance to anyone who does, it will help me heaps!

“I-” Brain trauma’s a funny thing. After all their efforts mapping it, they still don’t know quite how to repair it. And when- if- Bones wakes up, who’s to know it’ll even be the same man.
“Tomorrow, I think. Thank you, lieutenant. Dismissed- get some sleep.”

Geoff nodded in understanding. Kirk was going through a hard time and that Dr. McCoy was usually there for him. This time he couldn’t.

“Captain, if I may, I came up here because I wanted to check up on you as well. How are you?”

Brows knit, and Sulu keeps his eyes closed; shut tight as he tries to concentrate – dull the pain that refuses to be ignored. His voice is clear through it all, and pilot can’t help but chuckle, sensing the tone in M’Benga’s voice.
“Thanks Doc. Gotta admit, even if – this is a little hard to ignore,” he waves lazily, finger extending to point towards the injury. “Even with all this.”
He motions towards what’s outside, where the howl of winds was merciless – earsplitting, almost with the way it roared, how it felt like it could tear through them and the sound barrier.
The pilot lifts shoulders, shrugging, though looking pleased. “Wouldn’t be a good pilot if I didn’t know how to land.” A pause then, and Sulu sits up a little more. “How’re you holding up?”

M’Benga continued wrapping the leg with the splint, making sure that it was tight enough to keep it immobile, but not so tight as to cut off circulation. The doctor couldn’t help but chuckle at Sulu’s remark about the landing. He had to admit that had the roles been reversed, his own landing wouldn’t have been nearly as clean.

“Me?” The doctor raised a brow at the change of subject. Usually patients didn’t ask how he was doing, especially if he wasn’t injured. “Considering the fact that I lost a good third of my medical supplies to the wind, I’m doing just fine. I may have fallen over the moment we got here, but that’s nothing more than a bruise on my shoulder.”

Putting the finishing touches on the splint, Geoff kept Sulu’s leg in his lap to keep it elevated and gave him a little local anesthetic for the pain. He didn’t have too much, but it should help at least a little. “Hendrickson managed to avoid getting eaten by a local animal which is always nice,” he added with a nod to the figure by the entry way of their shelter.

With pressure placed, he feels pain; nerves wake like live wires that offer no resistance. The proverbial rush of a current through him makes muscles strain, eyes twitch as he fights to stop himself from wincing. Struggle, hitched at throat is only for a moment, before —
“— Ow.

“I think I’m going to skip the lecture because I’m pretty sure both of us know it would be redundant by now.” The doctor had the pilot’s leg in his lap as he carefully wrapped a simple splint in the flickering dying glow of the campfire beside them.

The light danced with the shadows along the walls of the hollowed out shell the group had claimed as their shelter for the time being. Geoff was beginning to grow acclimated to the constant roar of the high-velocity wind that dominated this landscape though he made a mental note to have the group check their hearing upon returning to the ship.

“At least you landed in a way that minimized the damage.”

“Sorry, I was… nothing. At ease. What can I do for you?”

“I just wanted to say, Captain, that he is stable now. He’s still in critical condition and we don’t know when he’s going to wake up.” Geoff wasn’t about to add that nobody knew if he was going to wake up at all, but something told him that Captain Kirk picked up on that.

“You can visit him now, if you would like.”
