  • Politicians lie about foreign aid to win votes.
  • Charities lie about the impact of foreign aid to stay funded.
  • Aid workers lie to themselves about the impact of a project.

In a new book called Why We Lie About Aid: Development And The Messy Politics Of Change, Pablo Yanguas explains how these mischaracterizations have created a dysfunctional aid system that hurts the people who need help most.

Are y'all following the recent news about Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE)?

1. Attorney General Jeff Sessions recently announced that ICE will separate children from their parents in detention, with no word on when they will be reunited (More here: http://time.com/5268572/jeff-sessions-illegal-border-separated/)

2. Of the 7,000+ children picked up by ICE and placed in homes in 2017, 1,475 children are currently missing and unaccounted for. (More here: http://time.com/5256734/government-missing-migrant-children/)

3. Documents obtained by the ACLU show massive horrific abuse of children in ICE custody, including kicking a child in the ribs, running over a 17 year old with a patrol car, sexually assaulting a 16 year old girl in a search, and detaining a 4 pound premature baby and her mother in an overcrowded and dirty cell full of sick people. (More here: https://www.aclusandiego.org/civil-rights-civil-liberties/)

4. ICE plans to destroy records of immigrant abuse, including sexual assault and deaths in custody (From an August 2017 report, more here: https://www.aclu.org/blog/immigrants-rights/ice-and-border-patrol-abuses/ice-plans-start-destroying-records-immigrant)

ICE was only created in 2003, as part of the US’s post-9/11 hyper-militarized, xenophobic frenzy. We didn’t have this department 16 years ago, we do not need it, and we should abolish it immediately. I do not say this lightly: ICE is America’s gestapo and we should treat them with that level of serious resistance.

I love how she almost drops it until she smells it and that flashbulb memory hits.

“Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real … Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”

Notice she says “who” it was and not “what” it was.

sobbing and clutching my stuffed lion i have slept with nearly every night for 33 years. i can’t fathom being separated from him long enough to not recognize him on sight, but if you blindfolded me and held up things to smell, i’d know him just as quickly and as hard as she did.

Video link is broken so here it is on YouTube, and I was already sniffling but then I saw this in the comments:

“The teddy bear was given to Jessica’s mother as a baby shower gift. After a long life, the bear was no more than part of head and a torn apart body with no stuffing. After a month of research and scouring through 10,000 vintage teddy bears online, Jessica’s fiancee was finally able to obtain the missing pieces of the bear, and had have him brought back to life at the local Teddy Bear Hospital.“

So that’s why she didn’t recognize him – he’d been so damaged that they had to reconstruct him. And now I’m crying even harder.

this is how you fight capitalism

This IS a good strategy, and maybe SHOULD be considered in other cases, but we definitely can not have an attitude that ‘Strikes are the GOOD kind when they continue to provide me service and/or don’t inconvenience me at all’ or say ‘Now THIS is how you fight Capitalism!’--because I promise you that most strikes are NOT GOING TO BE CONVENIENT FOR CONSUMERS/CUSTOMERS, that is a reality we’re going to have to get used to and be prepared to deal with if we want people to show solidarity towards workers fighting against exploitation from their bosses.

The point in solidarity is that we’re all in this together and support each other, not just when its convenient to us.

Finally a version of this I can reblog

I would even say; I’m glad when this type of strike works, but I actually prefer strikes that DO inconvenience consumers, because it makes the issue their problem too.

Ava DuVernay got a call once from “a friend.” This friend, a man and fellow member of the Directors Guild of America, called to warn her that “there [had] been some complaints.” Other directors were upset that DuVernay was recruiting only female directors for her show, Queen Sugar, and said she was discriminating.

To this, DuVernay had one response: “Thank you, friend, thank you for that call. I invite you to tell whoever is feeling discriminated against to sue me so that I can sue every studio that has left women out … ’cause we can do this, if that’s what you want to do.”

Reminder everybody that duckduckgo.com exists and doesn’t track you and  doesn’t store your search history. This is good for counter-surveillance reasons, but it also confuses the hell out of advertisers. If you don’t like the search results you get on duckduckgo, you can always search something there and add “!g” to the end of the search and it will route the search through Google, but still will not track you. This is a really easy thing almost everybody can do to resist government surveillance and advertiser tracking.
