Non-binary and androgynous are not synonyms. There are non-binary people who, say, love sports and have rugged beards. There are non-binary people who maybe love fashion and have long hair. There are non-binary people who are none of these things. They’re all equally non-binary.
And yes, this DEFINITELY includes non-binary people who were amab and are masculine, and non-binary people who were afab and are feminine.
one of the downsides of tumblr being so heavily picture focused is seeing all the plague rats tell on themselves posting twee photos of unmasked life like even supposedly covid-safe people will rb pics of superspreader events as if they're good, worthy of praise and enjoyment, when each one is a slap in the face reminding me that my life does not matter to society I catch myself looking constantly at photo timestamps to see if it were from a time before society wholly embraced eugenics It hurts, in every way, seeing photos of cons, queer events, shows, movies, protests and I could look at a thousand faces before seeing a single masked person who still cares that COVID is still killing us. I genuinely don't understand how people who are still masking in public (or so they say) and are isolating (or so they say) are deriving pleasure from these things which to me are casual violence and unbridled fascist horror. I truly don't get it, but it makes me suspect that these people are not as safe or serious as they claim.

I think one of the consequences of getting older is finding out that your parents were kind of right when they complained about technology? At least you can see they weren’t entirely wrong.
I’ve been hearing from friends that it’s getting harder to find quality refrigerators that don’t connect to the internet. Why exactly does my refrigerator need wifi? Or even a computer, at that? Older fridges can last decades because they have so few failure points. They have one job and they do it well.
I tend not to use my smart TV very often because the damn thing glitches and it’s laggy and too much of a hassle unless I am really committed to watching a movie in my living room. And the worse thing is...can you even buy a non-smart TV these days that isn’t secondhand? Are they even making ordinary...yanno...televisions that don’t need software updates and internet connections, anymore?
Someone in the comments of this post asked how bluetooth earbuds are forced and everyone pointed out that a lot of phones (especially iphones) simply do not have the ports to plug in wired headphones anymore. You must get the apple wireless headphones - and I think that’s the crux of the problem. I am glad I have an android phone because I can use the old wired earbuds I've had for over 12 years. If I wanted to, I could buy wireless earbuds and use them instead, because my model of phone gives me that option.
And that's the kicker: the problem is that as things are "advancing," more and more, options are being taken away. It has nothing to do with consumer demand - obviously there are a lot of people that are not happy with these developments. But as we’re seeing, the products being made don’t reflect customer preference or choice. It’s always about is best for the companies making and selling those products.
Every day we’re hearing about new apps and tech startups and really...does anyone really want this shit? Is the nth attempt to make crypto work, the billions spent on the Metaverse, doorbell cameras; is a fridge with an IP address really allow it to do its job better? Is that actually going to improve the lives of anyone who aren’t the developers of that product? Just the other day I was reading about a tech startup that wants to be able to beam ads into your car's GPS screen. Video ads! On a screen! To tell drivers what's nearby when they can just...continue to look out the window because they're supposed to be driving a goddamn car.
The problem of a world run by tech companies is that the tech isn’t being made to accommodate us, we are being forced to accommodate the tech.
i had to use a loaner car for a few days recently while my car was at the dealership for work. i drive a 2012 model, and they gave me a 2023 model to use. i have never been more frustrated while driving a vehicle. a huge touch screen lights up when you start the car, reminding me to NOT LOOK AT IT BECAUSE IT’S DISTRACTING. all the knobs, buttons, levers that I’m used to - you know, the things i need to find by physical touch alone so i don’t have to look away from the road? - they’re all touch screen buttons now. all of them!! even the parking brake. and you KNOW when any of those elements break (and they will) its gonna mean replacing the entire computer and not one physical component. not the mention software updates. I’m so stressed about whenever i will have to buy my next car because all new vehicles are being built this way. disposability as a function.
I have been on the hunt for wired headphones for a long time but the thing I’ve also noticed is that they break a lot easier.
They thin out the wires as much as possible and they don’t invest in the durability of the casing either.
When I was a kid with headphones they snagged on things all the time. Popped right out of my walkman or tore my ears near clean off, very jarring, I was a bit clumsy as a kid.
The thing is I rarely had to get new headphones because the old ones cord broke. Sure, the ear pads would wear away into nothingness, or eventually the headpiece snapped at the extender because it had to be thinner than the rest and thus ended up being more fragile, so I absolutely would have to replace them...eventually.
But now? I have gone through maybe seven cords for my current headset after having it for a little over a year. 2 USB cords and 5 3.5mmAux cables.
One or two snags and they are toast, if not broken entirely frayed to the point where only one speaker works. Even normal use, plugging and unplugging, tears off the head of the cable before too long.
Like when I was a kid I used to snag my headphones so hard that once my mp3 player flew violently out of my hand and landed four feet away on concrete. Both the mp3 player and the headphones worked perfectly fine afterwards.
But now you breathe on them wrong and the cords just unravel themselves.
So even when you can find alternative solutions, they are cheap and make to break. It’s so fucking frustrating.
My roommate and I disabled and trans and have been going through hard times for a while now. We are supposed to be moving soon, but we've had to take out of our moving fund for rent. We are so close to being stable, we can't let things fall apart now. But my roommate also needs dental surgery, and antibiotics, and this weeks rent is due Wednesday.

While the giant bill was fake, it represented a very real accomplishment. The group raised more than $17,000, which purchased more than $1.6 million in medical debt owed by Philadelphians, according to their nonprofit partner RIP Medical Debt.

The fact that this can be done at all shows how utterly bullshit the entire system is. There was literally no reason for that medical debt to exist in the first place.
Let's say you owe a private hospital ten thousand dollars, but you have very few assets, so they're pretty sure they're never getting any of that back. There's ninety nine other people who also each owe the hospital ten thousand dollars. (It doesn't have to be a hospital; any debt can be sold this way.) The hospital has shit to do and the low chances of you paying them mean it's an unnecessary drain on their time and resources to hound you all for it. But they can get *some* money, by selling your debt to a third party.
Let's say the sell each ten thousand dollar debt for ten dollars (I'm making all these numbers up for simplicity). So a third party gives the hospital one thousand dollars, and now all hundred of you owe that third party ten thousand instead! You're in the clear with the hospital, you owe it to these guys now! And their job is to hound and harrass you for the money you owe. If one of you pays up more than a thousand dollars, you've covered their initial investment. These guys are gambling on the likelihood that enough of you can pay your debts that you make it worth the time they spend tracking you and harrassing you.
Or, instead of trying to get the money out of you, they can just... decide you don't owe them. Why not? They own the debt. They can fork out a thousand bucks, buy a million in debt, and forgive it. That's what these guys did. (This is also a favourite move of John Oliver; if you ever see headlines about John Oliver forgiving debt, this is what he's doing). A small payment can take a massive weight off the shoulders of a lot of struggling people.
Again, I made up the numbers to simplify the math. But this is how the process works.

thing is, the debt companies *hate* this, because it means that it gives hope to people saddled with unimaginable debt that someone will come along and buy that debt and cancel it. So more people don't pay their debts, and they lose money. Debt buying companies do their *damnedest* to keep people like these philadelphhians and john oliver from doing exactly this.

So I've been get a lot of requests for money in my askbox lately, from users I have never seen before! Usually sad cats, sometimes gender affirming medical bills, a queer person being made homeless etc etc... and guess what? None of them are real! It's scammers who have learned how to work tumblr's userbase and prey on our general sense of community and charity.

Charity is wonderful, supporting friends is wonderful, but tbh save it for people you actually know irl/ mutuals you have an actual relationship with. Don't believe any rando who comes knocking!

If you get a puppy at the standard time, around 9 or 10 weeks, it is YOUR responsibility to teach them this. As you are playing, anytime they bite even a little too hard, make a sharp noise like a yelp or a hissing intake of breath or even just “hey!” not angry, more like in pain, and immediately stop playing. If they try to continue to play turn your shoulder or back to them, ignore them until they stop and let you recover. Then you can go back to playing with them. You are showing them what it looks like when they bite too hard, and what is expected of them in that situation, which is to wait to be invited to play before reengaging. Not only does this train them to not bite too hard, it lets them calibrate to each person, dog, and situation.
Maybe one of your hands is hurt – having grown up learning bite inhibition this way, your dog will pick up that you are wincing or stopping to inspect your hand or making a noise and will adjust their bite force/play style. This is a key aspect of socialization, and will let your dog play well with other dogs, children, etc.
People don’t really talk about this much but you should also be trying to teach this to cats (for biting and clawing too hard).

As for Abraham and Sarah being old as balls, we were told that people measured years differently back then. This seems more dubious as an adult, but given how many “birthdays” we celebrate (trees, animals, etc.), I can see the math mathing in a symbolic way.
When evolution was first posited in the western world and Jewish people reacted to it, the primary method of doing so was to fit Jewish ideas into evolution, and not to discredit it
in fact, many rabbis saw evolution as proof of gd's power through creation, not disproof
and the four worlds that were created and destroyed prior to ours in Kabbalah were assigned to the Precambrian, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic!
Yeah, hell, even just for the concept of human evolution, there are Kabbalistic and spiritual ideas about the Adam that preceded Adam, either the animalistic Adam (via Rav Soloveitchik) or the Spiritually Previous Adam (via Chassidut), which both acknowledge the existence of people in some capacity before the dawn of Adam HaRishon. I mean even the Tanakh itself describes humans existing outside of Adam and Eve's family structure who copulated with the Bnei Elohim, so if they didn't come from Adam and Eve they had to have come from *somewhere*.
Also, I'm actually not sure that Tanakh go ed a date for the Adam and Eve story. At some point, people created a calendar system, and backdated it to what felt like "a long time ago" for the point they felt year 0 should be.
Further: Personally I don't believe I have to fit everything in Tanakh to the scientific consensus. The Tanakh is not a scientific journal and it's function is not to give an as-accurate-as-possible-accounting of the earth's history. The Tanakh is myth and legend. Every culture has them; these are mine, and that's why they're sacred to me. These are the stories my ancestors told, and that's why they have relevance to me.

Working in a custoner service job is an incredibly easy way to get dehumanized to other people btw.
This isn't meant to be a haha funny relatably upset post fyi. Like this is just straight up something I'm saying. People do not treat customer service employees like humans as much as they should. I've had a man hit me in the back with a bag of scented pinecones to get my attention to tell me he found them when I said I didn't know if they were sold out since I hadn't been at work in a week, that man months later was complaining about me to a coworker, he recognized me half a year later despite having completely changed my look and brought it up like it was funny. I've had a woman tell me to my face that I was useless because I didn't have an easy solution to finding a price on something before demanding i lift the giant, heavy tent into her cart for her despite being half her size, and she didn't even buy it. I've had people ask me to open a product that I am not allowed to open, only to do it right in front of me when I say its not allowed. I've had people laugh at me when I said I was the one who was assisting them with something and scream at me when I said I couldn't assist with something. I've had to uncomfortably chuckle along when someone makes a joke about how I should know everything in the store because I didn't know if they were genuinely just joking or not. People just shove past or into me, or keep pushing their cart at me when I dont even notice them, because they expect me to move. The most fucked up part? These people are always completely polite to me when I'm just another customer in the store. I've had someone who told me I should just quit my job while on the clock later politely say excuse me and talk about the weather when I was simply buying chips out of uniform. In the same god damn day. The list goes on and on and on. The fact is that even if you don't personally dehumanize a customer service employee, so many people DO.
