He never hated his phone more than at that moment.
It was pressed up against his ear so tightly that the heat from the internal battery was right up against it.
The team was quiet, concerned as they watched him pace up and down the command center. The moment he had been allowed to leave the Med Bay, he grabbed it to call Mila.
"I should've done it." Sparx whispered to Nova as they watched Chiro walk by them, once more. "I was just so worried I-'
"It's not your fault." Nova whispered back. "Who could've predicted this?"
Chiro closed his eyes, listening to the ringing.
This wasn't normal.
"You got Mila!" Her voice cheerfully called out as the phone went to voicemail. "Sorry if you missed me, leave me a message and I'll get back to you as soon as I can!"
He let out a frustrated growl as he pulled the phone away, hanging up before dialing again.
This wasn't right.
His heart sank with each ring.
"Maybe her phone is dead?" Otto suggested. "She might've forgotten to charge it."
Chiro shook his head.
"No, that never happens. She hasn't forgotten to charge it in seven years…" His voice cracked a little. "Mila, please, just pick it up…"
His breath hitched in his throat.
Was this what he put her through?
His heart sank as he thought back to that first night.
How she was crying, running through the outskirts, looking for him.
The way she looked at him like he might disappear again.
I'm so sorry…
I'm so sorry, Mila…
Please, just pick up the phone…
Please…
"Please…" He pleaded. "Please…"
"You got Mila-!"
Chiro let out a frustrated yell, throwing his phone towards the wall opposite to him.
This chapter, was genuinely a joy to write when I did. Normally combat is one of my weakest things to write, but I feel like this fict really pushed me to get back to something that I struggled with.
It was really fun getting to write these guys in a proper fight.

OBSESSED with this story in the Kiriko spinoff “Dr. Kiriko: White Ghede” where Kiriko comes to put this girl Shiori to rest,
and after a little heart-to-heart where she asks if he has a wife, he leaves to find her parents throwing a party, and then they ask Kiriko what he thinks of their daughter, and he’s like ‘yeah she’s a good kid’ and they’re like ‘good, so will you please marry her!?!’
but apparently they don’t trust him to give the right answer, cuz they drug him,
and he wakes up in a shallow grave next to her cold dead body while her family, who is burying them, is all ‘hey, the groom woke up!!’
and then her dad is about to shoot Kiriko so that they can be together in death (not super clear but I think they already did a wedding ceremony for them?)
but suddenly homegirl Shiori opens her eyes
giving her new hubby Kiriko the chance to grab the gun,
and with her work done, she goes back to her nuptial grave
the parents tell Kiriko that their daughter didn’t want them to kill Kiriko, and that she really did have feelings for him, and Kiriko leaves it at that (and doesn’t call the cops on the parents cuz no one would believe him about a ‘death wedding’ but honestly he shoulda)
and so he goes home (holy crap he’s got a nice house???) to his little orphaned son/assistant who greets him at the door like ‘Hey, tell me next time when you’re bringing customers over so I can get stuff ready!’ and Kiriko is like ‘… huh??’, totally oblivious to his companion
and meanwhile I’m a mess cuz I wanted her to live, but also she came back from the dead just to save Kiriko, and somehow, him having a ghost-wife is the most fitting thing in the world??

to you, it's a shitty sentence. to some random bitch 500 miles away, it's a fire line that'll haunt them for the next 17 years.
you don't know how impactful your writing is because it's been in your brain for far too long now. you've stared at it for hours and repeated "this sucks" over and over again to the point that you killed your capacity to feel anything about your work.
but trust me, once you get your shit out there, someone's gonna go over that paragraph you hate and go "jesus fucking christ" and put the book down to have an existential crisis.
New MBK chapter!
Amber has been having some seriously scary nightmares, and of course Chiro can sense them through the special bond they share. Amber and Nova also get to have a little talk about Snowbound, about Nova's powers and how her emotions tie to them. Amber and Antauri also have a little talk about Amber's powers, and about her fears of what Skeleton King could throw at them next.
Overall just kind of a chapter for the characters to catch their breath a bit, work through some things, and try to prepare for the future.

I think a corollary to this is I don't want my fandom experiences to be unique, I want them to be sincere
That's why I enjoy reading the same tropes over and over again. Those authors are writing those stories from a genuine love of both the tropes and the characters.
It's why I enjoy 17 gif sets about the same 3-second interaction on screen. Each one of those sets was pulled and recoloured and captioned and adjusted because each one of those gif makers wanted to capture that moment and celebrate it.
It's why every "I'm glad you enjoyed it" reply makes me smile when I get one on a comment I left. Because I know replying to comments is hard and kind of awkward, but I also know that the author really *is* glad and I'm happy that I could let them know I enjoyed their work.
I love things that are new, sure. But I also love things that have been done a million times already because I know the person doing it loves that thing too. I love the love they're showing. I love the genuine joy and celebration and community it fills me with.
