this year has meant so much to me in terms of finding the passion for writing again. Before this I had stopped writing for two years and nothing made me want to write, then boom came Harry and Draco pounding onto my back like two feral animals and forcing me to open a new doc, thus starting my life as a willing hostage to their fuckery lol 

recently ive been unable to write again, but drarry has made me hopeful that i can do it. I’m really excited for 2021 and hopes to practice a lot more. Even tho it’s almost a week into the new year and i havent done shit lol

Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts to finish off his seventh year, but finds that it’s very different than the Hogwarts he once knew. Draco Malfoy wants nothing less than to go back to Hogwarts, but for his mother, he does it anyway.

It didn’t seem fair that Malfoy was dead, and Harry was supposed to just keep on living without him. He had lost enough people to know that he probably would keep on going—his stubborn heart was still beating, after all, even though it felt like it was going to break. But first, he had to get through the laying out of the dead—those old Pureblood funeral rites—even if every time he touched Malfoy’s too-cold body, he was reminded of how things used to be, and how things might have been.

10 in 10 for ‘20-Short Fic Rec List

A Pain of Our Choosing (E, 5.9k) - @lqtraintracks​

This is a wildly compelling Eighth Year fic, and I think one of the things I found most fascinating was the way lqt captured a real sense of violence between them, without making it brutal or gratuitous. Instead, it’s part of the essential conflict of the narrative, and a delicious study in character growth and catharsis. Harry is fucked up in the most intriguing way, while still maintaining his essential Harry-ish good humour and swagger and spark. And Draco is so tenderly written, while still flawed. It’s about them learning how to feel better, in the most delicious ways. I loved this one.

Breathe You In (M, 2.1k) - @shealwaysreads​

This is such a perfect slice-of-life fic. Every detail is so lovingly wrought, yet depicted with such gentleness and lightness of touch, that it feels like it seeps into your consciousness and envelops you. I love how subtle and restrained the writing is - such confidence! Such a sense of purpose! It’s world-building at its finest, and all within the confines of Harry’s bath. Fall into this immersive little piece of heaven, and fall in love with it.

Litany (M, 7.1k) - anon

It’s a pandemic fic, but not as we know it. This is the most glorious look at lockdown, with all the building unease and claustrophobia of confinement. It captures that curious, unsettling mood of panic mingled with relentless tedium, and the device of the list-making is so clever and impactful that I want to just lie down and roll around in all the feelings it makes me feel. It’s also, ultimately, an uplifting and lovely and very moving fic -  the character development and playfulness of the format, plus the smooth, brisk pacing, whisk us through unscathed to the joyful, hopeful ending. Very much looking forward to author reveals!

Lucid (E, 4.7k) - @dracoladon​

Every so often a writer comes along that makes me wish I was able to eat and drink every word they write, just swallow it down and pat my stomach in satisfaction, and dracoladon is one of them. Such exuberance of pace, such unexpected and delightful characterisation, such a joyous and affirming plot. This is deliciously hot, perfectly pitched in terms of its tone, and Harry’s narrative voice is one of the most charming things you’ll read this year. An absolute treasure of a fic.

push and pull you down (E, 5.2k) - @bonesliketambourines​

This is the fic for you if you want to read something that effortlessly blends real pathos with a sort of blatant, unabashed, filthy heat. I think I actually made a little noise when we were introduced to louche, fucked out, fucked up Draco in his underpants. He’s just endlessly compelling and distracting in this, and bonesliketambourines captures that so well (and makes us see exactly how Harry would feel the same), but does it in a really restrained, subtle way. I particularly loved the ending too. There’s a delicious ambiguity around what’s a good idea and what’s not - the concept of this being the best worst idea they’ve ever had, sort of thing? And there’s no compromise on the mood of the piece - Lis carries it through to the end and we’re left breathless.

Matching Pair  (T, 3.8k) - @the-starryknight​

One of my favourite things about Starry’s writing is how vivid and rich her world-building is, and this is a perfect example of her proficiency in creating a whole mood out of a little pocket of space. We spend all 3.8k words of this fic in front of a talking portrait in the Tate Magique, but Starry takes us from Cornwall to Boston and through two lifetimes of parallel loves, all from our spot in the gallery. Magique indeed! This is a poignant, tender story about regret and forgiveness, and we get to see older, softer Drarry learning how to balance the ease of their interest in each other with the weight of their pasts. A treasure.

A Midsummer Affair (E, 5.2k) - @lazywonderlvnd​

The mood of this fic is so potent, so fervid, that it feels like you’re in it as you read. I love the languid prose of the flashbacks, the sharp, shocking contrast of the non-linear narrative, the epically good dialogue. I was sucked straight into this fic, and read it in one breathless, choked-up rush. It’s so moving! So sweetly sad! Such a hopeful and confident ending! Read this then go and read everything else lazywonderland has written and you can thank me later.

oxygen (T, 4k) - @maesterchill​

This is one of those fics I wish with all my heart I could have written. It feels like every word, every line, every bit of world-building and characterisation and dialogue, is so PERFECTLY chosen. I actually read it with my hand to my chest like a caricature of a swooning Victorian maiden, and ended with tears in my eyes. Maester says of it, “it’s heavy on smoking and light on plot” because that’s what she’s like,  but let me tell you, it’s immense in terms of its emotional impact. I could read 100k of this Draco (his weariness, his fortitude, his intense self-criticism) and this Harry (who I am in love with, crooked smile, trembling hands, kind heart and all), but equally this vignette is so perfectly satisfying in terms of how much it reveals, that it really is all we need. And there’s stunning art too. Top-class, a perfect short, and it has my heart forever.

There is a place ( Chapter 22, T, 1.1k) - @cibeewastaken​

Look, if you can think of anything more perfect for cibee’s trademark blend of wry humour and devastating pathos than a found family fic about Slytherins and Gryffindors sharing Grimmauld and having a special room for them all to cry in, then you are incorrect because this is in fact the perfect cibee fic. It’s funny and tragic and hopeful and moving all at once, and in one thousand words cibee creates a warhammer blow directly to the heart. Give me Draco and Hermione wrongly filling out crossword puzzles or give me death! This left me with a lump in my throat and a sense of peace.

To the Rhythm of the Waves  (G, 2.7k)  - @tsauergrass​

There’s something so magical about tsauergrass’ writing, and really any of their fics could have appeared on this list, but I couldn’t possibly not feature this tender domestic piece about the quest for a home. The mood is dreamlike, like we’re hearing a snatch of distant music or feeling a breeze spring up out of nowhere - that sense of something charming and uncanny. Tsauergrass writes tenderness so beautifully, and this whole fic feels like we’re getting a glimpse into something hopeful and special and private. A blissful cottagecore romance.

Bonus fics!

fermata (M, 6.5k) - @yoyointhegarden​

This is technically cheating as this fic is from 2019 but it simply has to be included. We know that pianist!Draco is a fandom staple at this stage, but I’ve never come across a depiction quite like this one. It’s a quietly devastating fic (though it happens to be about making noise), and deals with trauma and grief and coping mechanisms in the most lyrical yet unflinching way. A true beauty of a fic.

Our Little Life (M, 7.2k) - @tackytigerfic​

This is also cheating but it’s my list and I want in! I wrote this little time travel/ alternate timelines/ epic love across the ages story for one of my dearest fandom friends, and it took me a while to work out where to go with it. In the end, I decided on… everywhere. Harry keeps dreaming of versions of him and Draco through history, in thousands of different scenarios and thousands of different lives (don’t worry, I only write about five of them). It’s sort of a non-linear, meandering little story, but I tried to pack in a proper big love story into a small space. My favourite sort of short to write - indulgent in plot, pared back in style, and vivid in mood.

I’ve read most of these and couldn’t have praised them better. Keep them coming Tacky, you’re such a great reccer and I can’t get enough of your brilliant lists! 🙌🏼💜

Late to the game but I wanted to join in on @miakagrewup‘s “Draw This In Your Style” tag. I think I made Draco a little Escaflowne, *makes so-so gesture with hand* (Does anyone even get that reference?) but this was fun!

Drarry for Beginners: Bond fics

Timeshare by astolat (2016, M, 14k)

I’ll probably rec everything by astolat at some point because they’re just that good. This is the first Drarry fic of theirs I’ve ever read and it’s such a surprising little tale! I love the pain-sharing concept and Draco’s voice is amazing, insufferable and posh and he’s a little shit to the Dursleys, which is enough to enjoy this fic. Now add impressive back story and slow burn. There’s a lot packed in 14k and things go from funny to serious in a heartbeat without feeling rushed or floppy. I especially love the quiet and heartfelt moments where they start to connect by figuring each other out. Clever and unique!

That Old Black Magic by @bixgirl1 (2019, E, 77k)

Listen, arranged marriage won’t get any better than this. This fic is a masterpiece - creative, powerful and breathtaking. The bonding rituals linked to the house are fascinating and deliver the most beautiful enemies to lovers journey, combining fast sexual burn and slow emotional development. There are so many complicated feels playing here, so much resistance and resentment as Harry and Draco are forced to get intimate and vulnerable with each other. The build up is hot but devastating and almost too much to handle until it’s not, until they fall in love and everything becomes hopeful and tender as they learn each other again for the first time, and that’s when you realize you want to live inside this story forever. This is one of those rides that hits you just right in the feels and leaves your heart aching in its wake.

Bond series by AnnaFugazzi (2005, NC-17, 204k)

A timeless fandom classic that set the bar for all the bonding fics that came after. I’m always awed by the fact that this was written back in 2005 and remains one of the best and most creative takes on this trope. One thing I love about this impressive novel is that it doesn’t beat around the bush; it goes straight for the bond incident and explores how Harry and Draco deal with it while standing on opposite sides of the war. This epic aged well thanks to an engaging plot and consistent character development that follows Harry and Draco growing both individually and together. Peak enemies to lovers with a little magical help 👌🏼

Drarry for Beginners: Soulmates

you’ve got the antidote for me by Kandakicksass (2018, M, 20k)

A brutal yet brilliant read, with hardcore angst and a devastating ratio of 90% hurt - 10% happiness but it’s so wonderfully written. I find the concept of severed soulbonds absolutely genius and Draco’s redemption path is moving and bittersweet despite the heartbreak. His fierce and stubborn self-sacrificing persona is fascinating and convincing. I’m also utterly in love with this Ron Weasley. It’s refreshing to see him so caring and generous - in fact, his genuine friendship with Draco is a saving grace through so much hurt. If you enjoy catharsis with a happy ending, this is a must read!

Vortex by @xanthippe74 (2020, T, 20k)

Hands down my favorite soulmate story. It is also focused on Draco’s individual struggle of coming to terms with his fate (can you tell I’ve got a weak spot for his POV?). It’s bittersweet but also inspiring in a gentle and healing way. I love how @xanthippe74 builds these layered, resilient characters, all while sewing amazing social commentary within the plot. The slow burn is almost poetic - beautiful dialogue, a tentative partnership to help the outcasts and only then Harry and Draco come together, so naturally it feels almost like an afterthought. It’s amazing to see Draco coming a long way, from self-sabotaging to believing he deserves true happiness. Treat yourself and experience this powerful, thought-provoking redemption tale.

Written on the Heart by who_la_hoop (2016, E, 113k)

This fic is unparalleled when it comes to world building. The magical tattoos are a visually stunning concept, and the author establishes a rich, fun and engaging 8th year universe. I love how the plot explores Harry’s issues but also gives other characters room to shine. Blaise is a triumph, snarky, insufferable and as much a protagonist as Harry and Draco. He holds all characters together through amazing inter-house dynamics. The warm and captivating Hogwarts atmosphere is familiar and full of mundane bonding moments, the perfect setting for this sweet slow burn between a pining Draco and a gentle yet oblivious Harry. You’ll read 100k in one sitting without even noticing, so why not start right now :)
