"He’s so good and snarky. His love interest and his love interest’s friends keep trying to catch him out and prove that he’s a ghost and he keeps avoiding being caught by being very powerful. He gives his love interest the power to lay him to rest very early in the books without telling him that’s what he’s doing. Iirc he’s offered the chance to become a god and chooses to be a ghost instead. He’s just fantastic"
"Hua Cheng is not only a ghost but an extremely powerful one, having been around for ~800 years by the beginning of the novel. His reason for sticking around for this long, in his own words: ""I have a beloved who is still in this world"". His beloved is a god who saved his life when Hua Cheng was a child! And Hua Cheng becomes this god's most devoted believer (and also falls in love with him as he grows up). Then Hua Cheng dies, but he doesn't let that stop him...
Now, as I mentioned, by the beginning of the novel he has been a ghost for a long time - and so achieved the status of a 'Supreme' ghost (the most powerful type there is). This gives him an ability to take corporeal form (or, technically, several different forms). But! In the flashback arc he appears as a tiny ghost fire! (Im not going anywhere with this I just think ghost fire huahua was mega cute.) "

"gay and incredibly dedicated to his loser boyfriend. his boyfriend has ascended to godhood multiple times, and keeps getting kicked out. after one of these times, Hua Cheng challenged all the gods who kicked him out to fight him, each in their chosen specialty, and if they win they get to scatter his ashes (effectively killing him) and if he wins they have to step down. he beat all of them because he's the strongest ghost, and he became that strong in order to protect his boyfriend. he keeps losing track of where his boyfriend is, so he spends centuries trying to find him, and looking out for him when he does. even when he does find him, he uses a pseudonym and disguise and helps him in secret. once, his boyfriend came to investigate his ghost casino on official god business, and Hua Cheng accepted his stale half-eaten bun as a wager. his boyfriend recognised him, but he'd already said before that he didn't care what Hua Cheng was, just that he was himself."
