Alright, so we all like to have discussions on Barry Bluejeans’ class, because yeah, he breaks out of the Wizard model a few times. I have a suggestion for you to consider in your wonderful little box of headcanons.
First, let’s go over the evidence of him multiclassing:
- He casts Command, a spell exclusive to clerics & paladins.
- When his memory is wiped, he thinks he’s a fighter.
- He plays music real good. (This isn’t really evidence of multiclassing. You can just play piano good without it being magic. I’ve just seen theory posts call him a bard because of this.)
People like to say he’s some sort of wizard-cleric-fighter-bard hybrid, which is all well and good. Honestly, I have no doubts the man was consuming a ton of knowledge over the century, and probably learning a fair bit of stuff outside of his official classes. (And the too-many-classes headcanon is just very fun to play in the space of, of course.)
But I’d like you to consider this: Barry is a wizard who has simply multiclassed into paladin.
“But how does this explain literally all of the valid evidence of him being those other classes, and also make more sense besides?” you ask. I’m so glad you’re interested!
- Command can be cast by paladins.
- Paladins as a class are already sort of a fusion of a cleric and a fighter. (Of course there’s more to it than that, but a lot of their abilities are similar to the two.) So, of course, when he’s lost his magic and all memories of any oath he made… he’d just have his combat skills. Of course he’d think he’s a fighter!
Okay. Assuming you’re now willing to play with me in this space, here are a few more things which aren’t evidence, per se, but fun things that could apply if you’re liking this idea.
- Paladins use divine magic, but it comes from the strength of their oath, not a specific god. This is good, because it means Barry “defying the will of at least a few gods at most points in time” Bluejeans doesn’t have to get in good with a god every plane like Merle does.
- Paladins’ fighting capabilities are very protection-focused. I know Magnus is “the protector” and all, but I mean, tell me Barry doesn’t do everything in his power to protect the people he loves. You remember Captain Bane. You remember the entirety of the podcast.
- And for a specific oath, how about the Oath of the Ancients?
- –> The tenets involve preserving & protecting hope, love, and life in the world, which is highly reminiscent of the IPRE’s general motive against the Hunger, and is also in line with Barry’s development as a character.
- –> Also, this oath makes you stop aging. And it’s not like Barry needs yet another thing making him immortal, but I think it’s fun to have there.
And, well. Them’s the thoughts! I hope you’ve enjoyed headcanon hour with Barry Bluejeans.
“Ariel is a tomboy, feisty, fiery and slightly rebellious, but a true romantic at heart, all things I can see in me. She was not an abstract character, and one strength I especially see is that Ariel is not trapped in a 1989 portrayal. I think she’ll be just as believable in 20 or 30 years as she is now because the emotions she portrays are that universal.”
JODI BENSON, the original singing and speaking voice of ARIEL in THE LITTLE MERMAID (1989), being interviewed for the animated film the same year of its release.

[ID] Three full color digital drawings showing Magnus, Merle, and Taako, each as a different type of merperson. The first image shows Magnus, in profile with one hand on his hip, the other holding up a small goldfish, which he is a blowing a kiss to. He is a shark merman. His top half is a muscular human with tan skin and short orange hair with thick sideburns, and his bottom half is a grey and white shark. He has a large dorsal fin on his back, with gold bracers on his wrists and tail. A tooth axe is strapped to his side, and a speech bubble with a small heart is floating in front of him.
The second drawing shows Merle as a seahorse merman. His top half is a tan dwarf with long white hair, pulled back into a bun, and a long beard with starfish and eels poking out of it. He’s wearing black glasses, and has a perplexed look on his face as he shrugs heavily. One arm is made out of pink coral, and he has a medical bag around his shoulder, full of kelp. His tail is a curled red seahorse tail.
The last drawing shows Taako as a manta ray merman, grinning with small starfish floating in the water around him. Taako’s top half is a slender elf with pale blue skin and long blue hair that flows around him in the water, pink pearls and blue coral strung throughout it. His tail is long and slender, starting off purple and turning to dark blue at the ends, and he has two large manta ray flaps coming off of the side. He has pink pearl bracelets on, and is smiling slyly. [end ID]
