The vulnerability was found by an engineer named Andres Freund. Networking and quality engineering are already thankless tasks; Freund deserves better than "some microsoft engineer."

For additional context, it wasn't an "unimportant" project, it was "xz" the encryption library sshd uses. It was vulnerable because it was controlled by a single maintainer, the original author. It is used by sshd, and thus most Linux kernels.

They did so mainly with social engineering pressure tactics, as well as cleverly (and not so cleverly) hidden code in pull requests and later on in commits.

I stress that this wasn't an unimportant library because there are none, especially if they are upstream dependencies of an OS kernel. This whole situation could have been avoided entirely if xz was better funded or more widely contributed to. Either case may have diffused the social pressures this attack depended on.
