SUBLIME CINEMA #550 - THE PHANTOM OF LIBERTY

Buñuel was near the end of a winding career, and made this as his penultimate pic - it covers familiar terrain (but still unlike any other filmmakers work), with surreal, satiric flights, and dream immersion.

The themes were outlined in his autobiography:

  • The search for truth and the need to abandon the truth as soon as you have found it.
  • The implacable nature of social rituals.
  • The importance of coincidence.
  • The importance of personal morality.
  • The essential mystery of all things.

And, Monica Vitti of course 🥀

Fruit of Paradise • 1970 • Věra Chytilová

An experimental retelling of the story of Adam and Eve which then progresses into an allegorical depiction of loss of innocence.
